Over 1,000 secondary students in Selangor at high risk of depression
State Public Health and Environment Committee chairman, Jamaliah Jamaluddin, said the students were identified through the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ), representing 2.8 per cent of those screened.
She said the findings, based on the Minda Sihat (Healthy Mind) Mental Health Screening Analysis for the 2024/2025 school session, indicated that overall psychosocial behaviour among students remains under control.
"To address mental health concerns, intervention programmes have been implemented and expanded to primary schools, especially for Year 5 and Year 6 students. The goal is to raise early awareness about mental health and build emotional resilience," she said.
The interventions focus on emotional and behavioural development, early prevention activities, and capacity-building for school guidance and counselling teachers.
These include workshops on mental health strategies such as relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, physical activities, as well as shoulder and neck massages.
Jamaliah was responding to a question from Azmizam Zaman Huri (PH–Port Klang), who had asked what immediate measures were being taken by the state Education Department (JPN) to address depression and anxiety among students in the 2024/2025 session.
She added that, in addition to general interventions, Selangor JPN is also running the Healthy Mind programme along with specialised modules.
These cover counselling sessions, emotional awareness, coping skills, 10B stress management, breathing techniques, mindfulness, anger management, problem-solving, positive thinking, and effective communication.
"These initiatives serve as early preventive measures and aim to strengthen students' mental well-being from the primary level," she said.

Nurse uniform supplier fined RM665,000 over late deliveries
KUALA LUMPUR: A supplier of nurse uniforms made from substandard fabric has been fined RM665,334.95 for late deliveries, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said. In a written parliamentary reply, Dzulkefly said the company had replaced 3,281 metres of fabric so far this year, but no fabric replacement claims were submitted in 2023 and 2024. The RM98.3 million contract remains in effect until Dec 31. Dzulkefly was responding to Lim Guan Eng (Bagan-PH), who asked whether the ministry had terminated the contract and if it had been compensated. "Based on the contract, the company has been asked to replace the fabric if it does not comply with the specified specifications," Dzulkefly said. "This is in addition to being fined if the company is late in supplying the fabric on the date specified in the government order document." The minister said the ministry had also issued a written reminder that the agreement could be terminated if the company failed to take appropriate action under the contract. Since the company is still complying with the clauses, he said, the contract had not been terminated. The Health Ministry had previously ordered the supplier to replace the substandard fabric on Feb 6 as a corrective measure.

Over 3,600 doctors and nurses resigned last five years
A TOTAL of 1,856 medical officers and 1,754 nurses resigned from public hospitals from 2020 to last year, says Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. However, during the same period, he said the Health Ministry appointed 13,349 medical officers and 8,121 staff nurses in public hospitals. 'The Health Ministry is aware of the need to increase healthcare officers in tandem with patient arrivals at our facilities,' Dzulkefly said. Therefore, to ensure healthcare facilities are adequately staffed, he said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had made a special announcement to hire more government doctors this year. He was responding to Wong Shu Qi (PH-Kluang), who asked about the number of doctors and nurses who resigned from 2020 until June 30 this year. She had also asked about the number of new doctors and nurses hired during the same period. According to Dzulkefly, a total of 13,552 contract medical officers were offered full-time positions from 2023 until now, exceeding the government's target of 12,800. 'This is an average of 4,000 medical officers appointed each year,' he added. Dzulkefly also said the quota of trainee nurses has been increased from 1,000 to 3,000 spots, which is a three-fold increase. Meanwhile, to address the shortage of staff in Sabah and Sarawak, Dzulkefly said the Health Ministry has allocated 960 spots to hire permanent medical officers. Wong then asked a supplementary question on whether the government is ready to consider a proposal by the Consul-General of the Republic of Indonesia in Johor Baru to recruit nurses from the republic to address Malaysia's staffing shortage. Dzulkefly said the Health Ministry has not received an official proposal. 'If there is (an official proposal), we are ready to consider it. But I have to stress that whether we approve it or not, it depends on factors such as effectiveness, safety and need. We also need to speak with the Public Service Department,' he said. Last week, the Consul-General of the Republic of Indonesia in Johor Baru Sigit S. Widiyanto said allowing Indonesian nurses to work in Malaysia would benefit both countries. However, the Congress of Unions of Employees in Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) opposed the idea, saying that many local nursing graduates are still waiting for permanent and contract positions, with some having waited as long as eight months. It said priority should be given to local nurses, who are already trained and awaiting employment.

Hospital staff shortage, Pan Borneo highway status among focus at Dewan Rakyat today
KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat session today will see focus on issues such as pork smuggling, status of the Pan Borneo Highway (LPB) construction, and the resignations of doctors and nurses in public healthcare facilities. According to the Order Paper on the Parliament website, Sim Tze Tzin (PH-Bayan Baru), during the oral question session, will query the agriculture and food security minister on the enforcement actions by the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) against pork smuggling, which poses a threat with the spread of Streptococcus suis and African Swine Fever. Sim will also seek clarification on the number of arrests made for pork smuggling activities throughout this year. During the same session, Datuk Dr Alias Razak (PN-Kuala Nerus) will ask the natural resources and environmental sustainability minister to explain the status of feasibility studies related to rare earth element (REE) mining activities in Permanent Forest Reserves (HSK) and the timeline for the completion of the study. Datuk Matbali Musah (GRS-Sipitang) will question the works minister about the current status and detailed timeline for each phase of the Pan Borneo Highway construction, specifically for WP01 (Sindumin-Melalia) and WP02 (Melalia-Beaufort) sections. Meanwhile, Wong Shu Qi (PH-Kluang) will ask the health minister to provide detailed information on the number of doctors and nurses who have resigned, the number of recruits from 2020 to June 30, 2025, and the measures being implemented to address staff shortages in government hospitals. Following the Q&A session, the Dewan Rakyat will resume with winding-up speeches on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) by the relevant ministers.
