Putin signs a bill punishing online searches for information deemed 'extremist'

Washington Post5 days ago
MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday signed a bill that punishes online searches for information officially branded 'extremist,' the latest in a series of moves by authorities to tighten control of the internet.
The legislation, which has been approved by both houses of parliament earlier this month, makes what it describes as 'deliberately searching for and accessing extremist materials' online punishable by a fine of up to the equivalent of $60.

Trump Ramps Up Tariff Blitz With India, Pharma, Chips in Sights

President Donald Trump said he'd impose increased tariffs on countries buying energy from Russia while clarifying that levies on semiconductor and pharmaceutical imports would be announced 'within the next week or so.' In a divergent approach toward Asia's giants, Trump said he'd raise tariffs on India 'very substantially over the next 24 hours,' accusing its Russian oil purchases of 'fueling the war machine.' By contrast, he said he was 'very close to a deal' with China to extend a trade truce that saw the two countries agree to reduce tit-for-tat tariff hikes and ease export restrictions on rare earth magnets and certain technologies.

Indian Rupee Weakens Amid 25% Tariff Warning

Indian rupee(INR) slides to a fresh low of ?87.79 after Trump threatens 25% tariffs. The rupee gave up more ground from Monday's ?87.65 close as traders brace for penalties over India's discounted Russian oil imports, echoing a wider emerging-market stumble this week. Trump took to Truth Social to accuse New Delhi of scooping up cheap Russian crude and flipping it for big profits, vowing a substantial tariff hike and even dubbing India a dead economy. India shot back, calling the threats unjustified and unreasonable. India imported 1.7 M bbl/day of crude in Q1, with roughly 40% coming from Russia. If the U.S. follows through, refiners may scramble to buy more Middle Eastern and Atlantic Basin barrels, driving up import bills and domestic fuel prices. A weaker rupee could swell India's $100 billion import bill, pinch corporate margins and stoke will eye the RBI's Aug 8 policy review and any fresh U.S. tariff updates for clues on the next move.
