Berkshire pharmacist warns about unregulated weight loss drugs
'Image-conscious'
Research from the NPA found 35% of 16-34 year olds had attempted to access weight loss treatments in the last year, either through an online or in person pharmacy."We think that this is primarily driven by online social media platforms, younger people are maybe more image-conscious and therefore desperate to access a treatment for one reason or another," said Mr Picard. But he said people were only eligible for the drugs if their BMI was over a certain number, or if they had certain comorbidities."What we're seeing is a lot of young people coming in for the treatment who are not eligible," he said."People then still have that desperation of thinking that this is the holy grail of weight loss and go and access it online."
The repercussions of this can be "horrendous", he said."Someone who came to my pharmacy having purchased something on a social media platform, received four syringes with some fluid in it, injected it - it was pure insulin," he said."Luckily for that patient, whilst she went into a hypoglycaemic coma, she had family with her, they called an ambulance, she is fine."But... buying from social media platforms, you don't know what you're getting and this is why we're putting out these warnings."The MHRA spokesperson said: "Our Criminal Enforcement Unit works tirelessly with partners to prevent, detect and investigate illegal activity involving medicines and medical devices... this can lead to the removal of social media posts illegally selling medicines and, where necessary, the suspension of accounts and the taking down of websites."

Justin Timberlake: List of Lyme disease symptoms after Mirrors singer's diagnosis
Justin Timberlake told fans of his "debilitating" health battle - having been diagnosed with Lyme disease - in a post on Instagram, following concerns over his performances Following Justin Timberlake's Lyme disease diagnosis, the Mirror has tonight outlined the key symptoms of the bacterial infection. Spread to humans by infected ticks, Lyme disease causes tiredness, aches and loss of energy, which can last for years. Justin, 44, told his fans about his diagnosis on Instagram on Thursday following the completion of his Forget Tomorrow World Tour. The singer said he wanted to "shed some light on what I've been up against behind the scenes" during his tour, which began in Vancouver, Canada in April last year and ended in Istanbul, Turkey this week. "As I'm reflecting on the tour and festival tour — I want to tell you a little bit about what's going on with me. Among other things, I've been battling some health issues, and was diagnosed with Lyme disease — which I don't say so you feel bad for me — but to shed some light on what I've been up against behind the scenes," the Mirrors singer said on Instagram. It comes after the NHS warns mouth symptom could be life-shortening disease. The Mirror has highlighted the plights of people diagnosed with Lyme disease in recent years. Lorraine Damonte, who was battling the crippling disease, had to endure her children screaming "I don't want to die, I don't want to be like you" after they contracted the infection too. Lorraine, from Sevenoaks, Kent, fought the vile bacterial illness for almost ten years and at one point thought she was going to die. The mum experienced bloodshot eyes, nausea, joint pain and fatigue, telltale symptoms. It is unclear which signs Justin, who has won ten Grammy Awards, experienced but he referenced "crazy fatigue or sickness" and "joint pain" in his full Instagram post. In it, the star, from Memphis, Tennessee, told fans he was desperate to continue his tour despite the challenges. The NHS lists joint pain as a common Lyme disease symptom. However, it adds a circular or oval shape rash around a tick bite is the most common early symptom. The full list, as published on its website, reads; Circular or oval shape rash around a tick bite a high temperature, or feeling hot and shivery headache muscle and joint pain tiredness and loss of energy READ MORE: 'I went for a dog walk - it left me with a debilitating disease that's cost me £150,000' Ticks which may cause Lyme disease are found all over the UK, but high-risk places include grassy and wooded areas in southern England and the Scottish Highlands. If you think you could have Lyme disease the GP will ask about your symptoms and consider any rash or recent tick bites. But Lyme disease can be difficult to diagnose. It has similar symptoms to other conditions and there's not always an obvious rash. Two types of blood test are available to help confirm or rule out Lyme disease, however these tests are not always accurate in the early stages of the disease. You may need to be retested if you still have Lyme disease symptoms after a negative result, the NHS says. A course of antibiotics is typically the best treatment for the infection.

Justin Timberlake says he's been diagnosed with Lyme disease
Justin Timberlake has been diagnosed with Lyme disease, the former NSYNC star said on Instagram on Thursday. Timberlake shared the news in a post commemorating his Forget Tomorrow tour, which wrapped in Turkey on Wednesday, adding that the disease 'can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically'. The SexyBack singer, who described himself as a private person, wrote that he considered ending the tour when he was diagnosed, but wrote that he 'decided the joy that performing brings me far outweighs the fleeting stress my body was feeling. I'm so glad I kept going'. Lyme disease is transmitted by Ixodes ticks, also known as deer ticks. It can cause flu-like conditions, neurological problems, joint pain and other symptoms. In the vast majority of cases, Lyme disease is successfully treated with antibiotics. 'I honestly don't know what my future is onstage, but I'll always cherish this run! And all of them before! It's been the stuff of legend for me,' Timberlake wrote. Timberlake cancelled and postponed multiple shows throughout the tour's run, citing health issues including bronchitis and laryngitis. Six of his US shows were postponed from October and November to February, the singer announced on Instagram. Timberlake ultimately cancelled the final show of the American leg of the tour in Ohio due to the flu in February. Representatives for Timberlake did not immediately respond to The Associated Press's request for comment. Timberlake pleaded guilty to driving while impaired in New York's Hamptons in 2024. As part of his plea deal, the singer gave a public safety announcement in September, urging drivers not to get behind the wheel after drinking. The ten-time Grammy winner ended the post thanking his wife, Jessica Biel, and their two sons, Silas and Phin, saying, 'Nothing is more powerful than your unconditional love. You are my heart and my home. I'm on my way.' Get all the latest news from around the country Follow STV News Scan the QR code on your mobile device for all the latest news from around the country
