'insulted Sanatan Dharma' and the Congress leader had failed to reply to requests for clarification sent three months ago.
In an announcement at the Shankaracharya Ashram in Badrinath, the seer said he waited three months for a reply from Gandhi after he claimed that Manusmriti "protects rapists" during a speech in Parliament. The Shankaracharya added that a reminder had also been sent, but no response came.
"During his speech, he first targeted ruling party members and then made the comment against Manusmriti. It is our dharm-grantha (religious text). Pointing a finger at the ruling party's benches, Gandhi had said it is written in 'your book', which means he does not regard himself as a Hindu. A person who does not regard Manusmriti as his text cannot be a Hindu."
The Shankaracharya said Gandhi was acting against Hinduism. "We took a decision that he should be banned from temples and priests should not perform pooja for him," he said. Incidentally, the Shankaracharya had last year come out in support of Gandhi's comments in Lok Sabha, which had sparked controversy. In his first speech in Parliament as leader of the opposition, the Congress leader had accused BJP leaders of dividing people along communal lines during the debate on the Motion of Thanks for the President's address. In response, PM Modi claimed that Gandhi had referred to the "entire Hindu community as violent." To this, Rahul Gandhi replied, "Narendra Modi ji is not the entire Hindu community, BJP is not the entire Hindu community, RSS is not the entire Hindu community".

CM Sukhu announces ₹100cr for disaster-hit families
Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced ₹100 crore immediate relief package for disaster-hit families and ₹3,000 crore project aimed at disaster mitigation and livelihood protection. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu highlighted the disparity in the state's financial aid.(PTI) The CM, during his 79th Independence Day speech, announced a series of measures to address recurring disasters in Himachal. 'Frequent disasters have caused heavy losses to life and property,' he said. Referring to the massive losses incurred during the 2023 disaster, which caused damages of ₹10,000 crore, Sukhu highlighted the disparity in the state's financial aid. 'Despite the central government's own assessment, Himachal received only ₹1,500 crore, that too after two years,' he said, adding that this year's disasters, especially in Mandi district, have caused severe damage. The state has not received any financial assistance from the Centre so far. 'The state government had already disbursed ₹360.42 crore from its own resources to aid the affected families. I hope the Centre will soon extend financial support to disaster-affected families,' he added. On the education front, Sukhu praised the reforms implemented by the state government, positioning Himachal fifth in the country for quality education. 'Teachers in all government institutions will no longer retire in the middle of the academic session, but at the end of the session,' Sukhu said. He also revealed plans to open 200 CBSE curriculum-based schools and fill 9,535 teaching posts in the coming days. In a bid to bring transparency, Sukhu addressed the issue of corruption in the previous BJP-led government's recruitment processes. 'The Himachal Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Board, a hub of corruption, has been disbanded,' he said. 'In its place, the Rajya Chayan Aayog will conduct computer-based tests to ensure transparency.' 'Merit-based selection will now include both written exam and interview marks, with stringent measures to combat cheating, including a provision for three years' imprisonment for exam-related offences. For this, the government will bring a bill in the next assembly session,' he said.

City mustard oil mill preserves Gandhian ideals
1 2 Ranchi: A shop-cum-mustard oil mill in capital's bustling Main Road area, which might be easily overlooked due to its modest appearance, stands as a living testament to India's freedom movement. Shyam Kishor Sahu established Gramudyog Bhandar in 1938 in response to Mahatma Gandhi's call to revive small-scale industries and promote self-reliance. At a time when imported goods dominated Indian markets, the mill churned out mustard oil, becoming both a source of livelihood and a symbol of the Swadeshi movement. Shyam ran the shop for 61 years, until his death in 1999. Since then, Shyam's son Narayan Prasad Sahu has been running the shop. "In 1934, Gandhiji called for re-establishing small industries across the country so that Indians get an opportunity to earn their livelihood. He set up a mustard oil mill in Wardha as an example. Disciples of Gandhi, my parents stayed at his Wardha ashram for years. My father returned to Ranchi and established the mill in 1938. As India celebrated its 79th Independence Day on Friday, the shop stands tall as a symbol of courage, patriotism, and ideals that dreamt of a free nation," septuagenarian Narayan, who is a physician, said. A plaque bearing Gandhi's wishes adorns the walls of the shop. During his visit to present-day Jharkhand to attend the 1940 session of the Indian National Congress held in Ramgarh, Gandhi stopped by the store and penned on a piece of paper, 'Iss Bhandar ki unnati ho' (May this store prosper), a message that continues to echo the shop's golden past. Shyam was jailed several times by the British, but his commitment to serve the country remained undeterred. "The shop was never just about selling oil. My father used the profits to support the movement, funding meetings, rallies, and helping fellow freedom fighters. Steeped in history, our shop aims to uphold and nurture Gandhi's ideals. I strive to preserve my father's legacy without altering its essence. The only change is that where bulls once churned the oil, machines have taken their place," Narayan said.
