Brenton Avdulla aims to help John Size reach major milestone on talented sprinter Wunderbar

Brenton Avdulla is excited to team up with Wunderbar for the first time in a race as the Australian bids to play a crucial role in helping John Size reach a major milestone at Sha Tin on Saturday.
Eighteen months after guiding Wunderbar to victory in a Conghua trial, Avdulla hops aboard the only horse to have beaten superstar sprinter Ka Ying Rising in Saturday's Class Two Pok Fu Lam Reservoir Road Handicap (1,200m).
A winner at six of 10 starts, including back-to-back victories over Ka Ying Rising last term, Wunderbar is one of Avdulla's four rides for Size, who has trained 1,599 winners in Hong Kong.
After Wunderbar racked up four consecutive wins last year, three surprise defeats prompted Size to give him a breather.
The Rich Enuff gelding resumes in an exciting finale to Saturday's card which also features in-form sprinters Fast Network, Bottomuptogether and Invincible Shield.

'Very early on in his career I trialled him at Conghua. It'll be good to be on him for the first time on race day and he's drawn well [in barrier three],' Avdulla said.
'He's probably found one of the hottest Class Twos of the season but I'm looking forward to riding him.
'He had those couple of runs where little things were against him and he probably didn't perform to his best and John started again with him. He seems like he's trialled OK, so you've got to respect the master taking him back to the races.
'He's obviously probably going to improve on whatever he does, but I'd expect him to run well if he's anywhere near his best. He'll give himself every chance from the draw.'
Ahead of his first start since January, Wunderbar has notched three wins and a third from his four recent trials at Conghua.
Avdulla is also optimistic about his chances on Size's progressive three-year-old Juneau Pride in the Class Three Lung Mun Road Handicap (1,400m) on Saturday.
A pint-sized galloper weighing in at under 1,000lbs, Juneau Pride has racked up three victories and five placings from eight starts in an impressive debut campaign, with Avdulla on board for all but one race.
His bid for a hat-trick fell narrowly short last start when he ran second to South Star under top weight of 135lbs.
'He's racing really well. He's probably one of my favourite horses to ride in Hong Kong,' Avdulla said.
'He's been so consistent. I don't think I've finished further back than third on him and he's never been beaten far. He bounces, you can put him anywhere and he tries hard.
'He's probably at that mark now where it's going to pull him up a little bit, but there looks to be three main chances and he's one of them with the other two who have drawn next to each other [Light Years Charm and Another World]. He'll run well again.'
Juneau Pride again carries top weight of 135lbs but comes into gate two after almost overcoming barrier 10 last start.
Fourth in the jockeys' championship with 38 wins this season, Avdulla also rides last-start dirt winner Meepmeep and Smashing Express for Size on Saturday.
Lahore, Never Too Soon, Pejibaye and Fighting Machine are the 34-year-old's other rides. Size will also be represented by Arden, Bundle Of Charm and Lifeline Express as he bids to join John Moore in training 1,600 winners in the city.

Benno Yung confirms season 2024-25 will be his last as a trainer

Benno Yung Tin-pang has informed the Jockey Club he will not be making an application for a licence for next term, meaning next month's season finale will mark the end of his 12-year career as a trainer. Yung's decision comes just days before the Jockey Club's licensing committee was set to make an announcement on his future. At 66, Yung has reached the Jockey Club's compulsory retirement age and as he has not met the criteria required for an extension, it has looked for some time like this season would be his last. Yung will retire with his head held high after making a strong return to the track following a period of absence last year as he battled acute myeloid leukaemia. Since his return to the races in November, Yung has had his stable ticking over solidly with 17 winners. Trainer Benno Yung after a recent winner. After starting out as a jockey in Hong Kong before becoming an assistant trainer in 1991, Yung went onto post an impressive 37 wins in his first season training in 2013-14 before landing a personal-best return of 39 victories in the 2021-22 campaign. He sits on a total of 358 successes with 10 meetings remaining in his final season, 18 of which have come in 2024-25 so far. Victorious at two of the past three meetings – including the triumph of $18.1 chance Aeris Nova in Sunday night's finale at Sha Tin – Yung will no doubt be keen to keep cashing in while he can. He has five runners at Happy Valley on Wednesday night, including Day Day Victory in the Class Four Sheung Wan Handicap (1,000m). Victorious twice at the course and distance in Class Five in recent months, Day Day Victory was sent off the $4.4 favourite for his return to Class Four on May 21, however he could only manage seventh. Alexis Badel sticks with the four-year-old for Wednesday night's contest and the French jockey has barrier three at his disposal aboard a galloper who will carry only 118lb. In other news, jockey Angus Chung Yik-lai will head to Happy Valley with a reduced claim after riding his 95th winner at Sha Tin on Sunday. Successful aboard the Tony Cruz-trained Star Satyr while claiming 3lb on the weekend, Chung will now only have the benefit of a 2lb allowance as he builds his career win tally. Chung has five chances to continue his push towards a century of successes on Wednesday night, jumping aboard Yung-trained debutant A La Champ as well as Happy United, Wah May Wai Wai, Embraces and Loaded With Fluke. Chung has picked up a handy one in last-start winner Embraces, who rises in grade for the Class Two Cheung Sha Handicap (1,650m). Embraces has been assigned just 118lb off a rating of 80, meaning Chung steps in for Jerry Chau Chun-lok.

New blood and old heads give Hong Kong belief in netball World Cup bid

Hong Kong players old and new have high hopes they can win the Asian Netball Championships for the first time in more than 30 years, and qualify for the 2027 World Cup in the process. Advertisement In the past, the top two finishers in five regional qualifiers have progressed to the World Cup, alongside six other teams, including the host nation. In two years' time, that will be Australia. But the city's women do not have a great track record at the biennial regional tournament, having won it only once, when it was staged in Hong Kong in 1993. They have not managed to finish in the top three since then. The next tournament though will be held at Kai Tak Sports Park, and Gessy Li Ga-wing, 27, believed that would give her team its best chance of qualifying for the 'Olympic-like' tournament for the first time since 2003. 'Any netball player wants to go to the World Cup, it's like the Olympics for us,' said Li, who has been playing the sport for 15 years. 'We're still working to be an Olympic sport, so the World Cup is the highest level you can play. Advertisement 'The opportunity to play with the top teams like Australia and New Zealand excites me. I know this team can get there because we have a good mix of veterans and new players coming in.'
