28 days until the Texans' 2025 season opener: Who has worn No. 28?

USA Todaya day ago
The Houston Texans are less than five weeks away from kicking off the 2025 season in Los Angeles against the Rams at SoFi Stadium and we're counting down the days until a victory ensues on the West Coast.
Texans Wire will daily inform you which player has worn the number of the day leading up to kickoff and select the player who best represented the number during their time at NRG Stadium. As for today, let's take a look at who has worn No. 28 since the inaugural season in 2002.
Texans players to wear No. 28
No. 28 currently belongs to veteran Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon. While he's not out at practice right now, that doesn't mean that the former Cincinnati Bengals star was a flash in the pan or a one-hit wonder.
Mixon, who inked a three-year extension after being traded to Houston last offseason, hit the ground running with a 159-yard outing in the Week 1 opener. He followed that up with four straight 100-yard performances from Week 6 until Week 10's loss against the New York Jets.
Despite missing three games, Mixon became the first Texans running back since Carlos Hyde in 2019 to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season. He was named to the Pro Bowl roster and finished with a team-leading 12 touchdowns. In the postseason, Mixon averaged 4.6 yards a play and scored a pair of touchdowns.
He's back, ready for Round 2, with the intent of becoming a fixture in Texans' history while helping the franchise reach its first-ever conference title appearance.
Best Player: Alfred Blue
Given his longevity as the Texans' No. 2 back behind Lamar Miller, Blue gets the nod -- for now -- over Mixon. A former sixth-round pick, the LSU star averaged at least 127 carries per season for over 528 yards and 3.6 yards per attempt.
Should Mixon put up similar production next season, the Texans probably will have a new G.O.A.T. running the show with the No. 28.

Texans place TE Brevin Jordan on season-ending injured reserve after heartbreaking injury

Texans are placing TE Brevin Jordan on season-ending injured reserve due to the knee injury he suffered during Monday's practice, as @jonmalexander also reported. Brevin Jordan's 2025 is officially over for the Houston Texans. According to The Houston Chronicle's Jonathan M. Alexander, the Texans are placing Jordan on the season-ending injured reserve after he suffered a knee injury during Monday's practice. The team has since announced that they've signed veteran offensive tackle Connor McDermott to the active roster. Since Jordan was placed on the injured reserve before the start of the regular season, he isn't eligible to return for the impending year. The veteran tight end was expected to be an influential part of the offensive personnel under new play-caller Nick Caley. "Unfortunately, we saw Brevin go down with an injury," Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said following practice. "We will continue to evaluate 'Brev' and see where he is. It's tough for everybody to see Brevin going down, knowing how much work he's put in to get back to this point of playing football and how excited he was to get back to playing football. So, just praying for him to have a successful return.' During drills in practice, Jordan was going up for a catch in traffic when he came down and fell awkwardly. He didn't get up, almost in a state of shock regarding the injury, before teammates came over to check on him. The scene was emotional, as Jordan was seen visibly upset while being carted off for further evaluation. He shouted out, "No!" as it became clear that his return to the field was likely suffering another setback. Last season, Jordan missed nearly the entire campaign after suffering a torn ACL in Week 2. He attacked the rehab process strong throughout the offseason and looked like one of the more improved players through the early stages of camp. But it's Jordan's leadership and attitude that made him a beloved member of the roster. On Saturday, he was the one to give the pregame pep talk in the huddle, a moment that went viral on social media among Texans' fans. Not only is Jordan loved by the fans, but also by his teammates. Pro Bowl quarterback C.J. Stroud had to be consoled by tight end Dalton Schultz after checking in with the tight end. Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair made sure to stay with Jordan until the medical staff was able to get him on the cart. Drafted out of Miami in the fifth-round in 2021, Jordan had 532 receiving yards and five touchdowns before the injury in 2024. He also made 13 starts in 36 career games. During the middle of his rehab last season, Houstn signed Jordan to a one-year extension worth $2.1 million to keep him around for one full season before hitting free agency in 2026. Now, his future with the Texans remains unknown. As for the tight end position, Houston will need either Irv Smith Jr., Dalton Keene or newcomer Luke Lachey to step up as the No. 3 option behind Schultz and second-year player Cade Stover.

Steelers' Cameron Heyward Could Sit Out Games: 'I'm Looking to be Valued'

Cameron Heyward wants a raise. And the longtime Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle is open to sitting out regular-season games to get one. Heyward told reporters Monday that he approached the club about a reworked deal in February after being selected to the All-Pro team for the fourth time in his 14-year career. There has been no movement on that front nearly three weeks into training camp. "Honestly, looking to be valued," Heyward said. "I know what I bring to this team and what I'm capable of on and off the field, so it's hard for me after the year I've had to really justify playing at the number I'm playing at." Now 36, Heyward is a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and had been "holding in" during camp, participating in some individual workouts but skipping some fully-padded 11-on-11 snaps. He stood on the sideline in street clothes on Monday as the Steelers began the final workouts of their annual three-week visit to Saint Vincent College. Heyward said the team asked him to take a pay cut last summer. They ironed out a reworked deal instead that runs through 2026. He responded by bouncing back from an injury-marred 2023 to finish with eight sacks, 71 tackles and 11 passes defensed as the Steelers went 10-7 and reached the playoffs for the fourth time in five years. "When I look at the market and I look at what I've done, it's hard to really wrap my head around playing a number where I'm not even half of what the rest of the market is," Heyward said. "I can't say I'm not disappointed with where we're at. I think it's pretty simple of how it could be handled. ... I just wish I could just be out there not having to worry about this." Neither Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin nor defensive coordinator Teryl Austin are bothered by Heyward's position or his lack of participation at this time of year. "Cam's been doing this a long time," Tomlin said. "I don't work Cam a lot in these scenarios [during camp]." The Steelers do have a little bit of wiggle room under the salary cap, but have also doled out hefty contracts to star outside linebacker T.J. Watt, wide receiver DK Metcalf and recently acquired defensive back Jalen Ramsey. Heyward, the 2023 Walter Payton Man of the Year, has long stated he wants to be a "one helmet guy," meaning he would prefer to spend his entire career in Pittsburgh. While that's hardly in danger at this point, his aggressive stance has thrown a wrinkle into a relatively quiet camp. Reporting by The Associated Press. Texans place TE Brevin Jordan on IR, sign OT Conor McDermott

Texans tight end Brevin Jordan will not play in 2025. Jordan suffered an apparently serious injury during Monday's practice and Houston announced on Tuesday that Jordan has been placed on injured reserve. Jordan had just recovered from a torn ACL suffered early in the 2024 season. In four seasons with the Texans, Jordan has caught 53 passes for 532 yards with five touchdowns. As a corresponding move, the Texans have signed veteran offensive tackle Conor McDermott. McDermott, 32, last appeared in six games with five starts for the Patriots in 2023.
