Agencies India will mark its Independence Day on Friday, August 15, 2025. As per tradition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the Tricolour and deliver his address to the nation from the Red Fort. This will be PM Modi's 12th consecutive Independence Day speech and his second since beginning his third consecutive term in office. The celebrations kick off early, with the official address scheduled around 7:30 am. The ceremony usually starts with greetings from dignitaries, followed by a 21-gun salute and the stirring rendition of Jana Gana Mana, often accompanied by a floral shower from Indian Air Force helicopters.
The Prime Minister's address will be telecast live on Doordarshan. The event will be streamed live on the Press Information Bureau's (PIB) YouTube channel and on X (formerly Twitter) via @PIB_India. The Prime Minister's Office will also broadcast the speech on its official YouTube channel. Live streaming will additionally be available on pmindia.gov.in, ddnews.gov.in, and the National Informatics Centre's Independence Day portal (independenceday.nic.in).The official theme for Independence Day 2025 has not yet been announced. However, it is expected to highlight unity in diversity, inclusive growth, and national development — reflecting India's vision of becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2047, the centenary of independence.
There is often confusion over whether 2025 marks the 78th or 79th Independence Day. Many people subtract 1947 (the year of independence) from 2025 and arrive at 78. This occurs because they start counting from zero or consider only anniversaries, not the first celebration itself. The correct method, as per official records, is to count 15 August 1947 — the day India became independent — as the 1st Independence Day. Therefore, Independence Day 2025 will be the 79th celebration of India's freedom.

CHENNAI: The Congress, CPM, CPI, Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) have announced they will boycott the 'At home' reception to be hosted by Governor RN Ravi on the Independence Day. TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai, in a statement, said his party is boycotting the reception, protesting the anti-Tamil attitude of the governor, and condemning him for forwarding the Bill on Kalaignar University to the President. VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan said the party has been boycotting the reception, protesting the successive governors' activities against state autonomy and the two-language policy, besides attempting to saffronise the antiquities of Tamil Nadu. CPM state secretary P Shanmugam said ever since assuming office, Ravi has been acting against federal principles and the interests of Tamils, besides the Constitution. Even after the SC defined the powers of the governors, Ravi has continued with his stance. CPI state secretary R Mutharasan expressed similar views. MMK president MH Jawahirullah said the governor has been clashing with the popular government in TN for unnecessary reasons, and hence, the party has decided to boycott the reception.

'A day to honour their grit': PM Modi marks Partition Horrors Remembrance Day

Ahead of the Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' and said that the day honours the grit and ability to face unimaginable loss and still find the strength to start afresh of countless people who witnessed the Partition of India and Pakistan. An undated handout image released by the Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on June 13, 2017 and taken circa 1947/1948 shows a camp for displaced Indian Muslims next to Humayun's Tomb in New Delhi, during the period of unrest following the Partition of India and Pakistan. (Photo (Photo by Prakash Singh/various sources/AFP) Ahead of the Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday marked the 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day'. In a post on X, Modi said that the day honours the grit and ability of the witnesses and victims of the Partition to face unimaginable loss and still find the strength to start afresh. 'Many of those affected went on to rebuild their lives and achieve remarkable milestones. This day is also a reminder of our enduring responsibility to strengthen the bonds of harmony that hold our country together,' Modi further said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Modi had announced August 14 in 2021 as the 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' with the stated objective to commemorate the victims and the suffering of the Partition. The day is meant to remind present and future generations about the episode. The day would keep 'reminding us of the need to remove the poison of social divisions, disharmony and further strengthen the spirit of oneness, social harmony and human empowerment', Modi said at the time. In 1947, the independence of India was accompanied by the partition of the British India into a Hindu-majority India and a Muslim-majority Pakistan, sparking one of the largest human migrations in history as Muslims moved to Pakistan and non-Muslims moved from to India. The Partition led to widespread rioting and killings that killed hundreds of thousands. Around 8 million non-Muslims moved from Pakistan to India and around 7.5 million Muslims moved from India to Pakistan (both West and East Pakistan; East Pakistan got independence from Pakistan in 1971 and became Bangladesh), according to Government of India's estimates. 'The estimate of those killed has varied from 5,00,000 to over 10,00,000. The generally accepted figure stands at around 5,00,000,' the GoI noted in a document at the time. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The Partition of India was a result of the Pakistan movement waged by was rooted in the demand for a separate country for Muslims, led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the Muslim League on the basis of 'two-nation theory' that said that Hindus and Muslims were two nations and could not live together in one country. However, the idea of Pakistan or at least a separate country for Muslims had been there for decades before 1940s when Jinnah ratchetted up the campaign. The Partition Museum has said, 'The demand for a separate nation for Muslims had been raised by various Muslim leaders in the previous decades, most famously by Allama Iqbal at a Muslim League conference at Allahabad in 1930 where he articulated the idea of a Muslim nation within India. The term 'Pak-Stan' had been coined by Choudhry Rahmat Ali in the 1930s while he was studying at Cambridge University.'

IAF Chief Confirmed 5 Pak Jets Downed, Aviation Expert Tom Cooper Says 'Evidence' Of Even More

International military aviation analysts have backed IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh's claim that at least five Pakistani jets and one airborne early warning aircraft were shot down during Operation Sindoor. Renowned aerial warfare expert Tom Cooper said Singh's remarks confirm what had already been assessed in May. Cooper added there's evidence of even more Pakistani aircraft being downed or destroyed on the ground. He also endorsed Singh's statement that the IAF's S-400 missile hit a target 300 km away — calling it a historic world record and highlighting the high-risk deployment near Pakistani artillery range.#operationsindoor #iaf #indianairforce #s400 #pakistanairforce #tomcooper #airchiefmarshalamarpreetsingh #saab2000 #longestrangeshotdown #militaryaviation #indiapakistanconflict #airwarfare #toi #toibharat Read More
