Miramar football sticking to familiar ‘recipe for success' heading into 2025 season
Two of them, actually.
The first one is Miramar's 'Dark Side Defense,' a ferocious unit whose nickname goes all the way back to the program's only state title in 2009.
But what the Miramar program is really all about, according to coach A.J. Scott, is building from within, tinkering with position changes, and – over the course of a player's four years at the school – creating a skill-set that is ready to make an impact in college football.
Scott likens his job to that of a chef.
'At Miramar,' Scott said, 'we always have something in the oven cooking. When one player graduates, another player pops out of the oven, ready to go.
'We use our own seasoning, and that makes it taste good.'
Cooking analogy aside. Scott, who has been Miramar's head coach since 2017, has led the Patriots to five straight winning seasons, including a 10-2 record in 2022, an 8-5 mark in 2023 and 7-5 last year.
Traditionally, most of Miramar's best players are what Scott calls, 'Four-Year Patriots' – kids who played their entire high school career in this same program.
Examples of players who were successful after Miramar's coaches changed their position include Shamar Meikle, who went from free safety to outside linebacker and is now at Oregon State; and Desmond Reid, who went from slot receiver to running back and is now at Pitt, where he made second-team All-American last year.
Reid gained 1,545 yards from scrimmage last year, scoring nine touchdowns while averaging 6.5 yards per touch. He also added a TD on a 79-yard punt return.
'When I first met Desmond, he said he thought he was too small to be a running back,' said Scott of Reid, who is listed at 5-8 and 175 pounds. 'But I looked at how strong his legs are, and I told Desmond, 'You're a running back now.''
Smart move.
The best player to come from Miramar's football program is Geno Smith, a two-time Pro Bowl quarterback who is now with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Ex-Miramar star Myles Harden is also in the NFL. He is a second-year defensive back with the Cleveland Browns.
Other Miramar greats include four players who switched from wide receiver to defensive back: Tracy Howard (University of Miami); Brian Edwards (Florida); Herb Miller (Florida Atlantic); and Jacarvis Alexandre (Ferris State).
'I love 'stealing' wide receivers and moving them to defensive back,' Scott said.
Miramar even has a player in the Ivy League – defensive back Caleb Solomon.
All the players listed above were 'Four-Year Patriots', which is Scott's pride and joy.
Scott said a lot of credit goes to Miramar's junior-varsity program, which has helped develop numerous players.
'We have a lot of great coaches in our system,' Scott said. 'They help create some animals.'
Scott said Miramar averages about 30 players lost to graduation each year. Even so, they generally get about 130 players on the roster each year, and that is split equally between varsity and JV.
As for Miramar's top players for 2025, senior middle linebacker Jabril Mobley – a 5-11 and 210-pound senior -- leads the way.
On offense, Scott is fired up to have T.Y. Conyers back as Miramar's coordinator. Conyers was Geno Smith's offensive coordinator in 2008 before coaching in college.
Conyers came back at midseason last year, and he was a difference-maker, according to Scott.
'He's a great coach,' Scott said. 'I have never met a coach who takes players into the classroom to watch more film than I do, but, so far, he has me beat.'

More details from the Steelers' blockbuster acquisitions of TE Jonnu Smith and Jalen Ramsey have now been revealed. On a recent episode of The Rich Eisen Show, insider Tom Pelissero explained that the Dolphins were almost forced into a player-for-player type trade scenario — as any trade partner would be more willing to take Ramsey's expensive contract if Miami took a high-salary player in return. After trade negotiations with the Rams and Chargers fell through, Pelissero pointed to the perfect scenario that presented itself with Pittsburgh's Minkah Fitzpatrick — but it may have come down to the Pro Bowl tight end: "It just so happened that the Dolphins also had a situation with Jonnu Smith — who happens to be Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith's favorite tight end — where he, too, became available," Pelissero said. "The Steelers had a guy in Minkah Fitzpatrick, who's due $15.5 million this season — his ball production in particular over the last couple of years has not been the same. Minkah is still only 28, but maybe not quite the same player he was the first time around in Miami. "[The Steelers] get a more versatile player, albeit one who's being paid more, in Jalen Ramsey. They think they can do a lot of different things with him, and a bonus out of that trade is they get a guy in Jonnu Smith, who's coming off a productive season in Miami." While some have criticized the Steelers for exchanging aging DBs, one has to wonder — after hearing Pelissero's insight — if Pittsburgh would have even entertained trading Fitzpatrick unless Smith came along as well. 'Relax A Little Bit': Kyle Van Noy Challenges Former Teammate Justin Herbert To Step Up
LOS ANGELES - As an elder statesman in the NFL, Baltimore Ravens pass rusher Kyle Van Noy won't mince words when it comes to those he's mentored – including Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. "Part of me says [Herbert] needs to relax a little bit, because he cares so much," Van Noy told me. "He's a perfectionist. Just go out there and play ball." Van Noy, who continues to defy his age by finishing with a career-high 12.5 sacks in 2024 and reaching his first Pro Bowl in his 11th NFL season, was a teammate of Herbert's during the 2022 campaign. The Bolts made the playoffs, but suffered an embarrassing loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars as they blew a 27-0 lead. Van Noy shared a locker next to the talented signal caller that year, which was his only one with the Chargers. He noticed Herbert's work ethic, calling him a layered "onion" as the two became close in that lone season. "If he was able to give what he gave to me for a year to everybody else in the locker room, I think it would change people's perception of him," Van Noy added. "You've already accomplished so much. I know he wants to accomplish even more, but I do feel like he takes the game very seriously. The one thing I will say about Justin is he works really hard, and I appreciate that as a teammate. But sometimes you don't have to work as hard. Let's take a step back for just a second and diagnose – am I doing other parts of the game like the film study enough?" While he believes the Chargers still need to add more playmakers around Herbert to make his job easier and that he's been hampered by the constant change of offensive coordinators, Van Noy said he also needs to shoulder some of the blame for a 41-40 overall NFL record (including postseason) and no playoff wins. Van Noy went on to say he believes Herbert must work to create better connections with his teammates. "I do think he's doing some things," Van Noy said. "He would go to team dinners, but I think he could also do more. And that's just me from my year of being with him. He's still young. And I'm sure he's way better now than since I was there. But that was just something he could do even more." Van Noy delivered these candid comments while attending the NFL's player personal branding and social workshop in late June. The BYU product is continuing to work on opportunities in television and content creation once his career is over, and part of that is in giving unfiltered opinions based on his experience playing in the league. Van Noy has appeared on FS1's "The Herd" along with NFL Network's "Good Morning Football" and ESPN's "NFL Live." "This has been more educational on, 'OK, once I'm done, what lane do I want to go in?'" Van Noy told me. "Do I want to go the content creation route? The broadcasting route? Or is this not what I want to do, and do I want to do something else? So, it's just been very valuable information." The 34-year-old has totaled 21.5 sacks over the last two seasons, tied for 10th overall during that span. So, what's the secret to Van Noy's success this late in the game? Always known for his versatility, Van Noy has focused on getting after the quarterback later in his career to make game-changing plays more frequently, which has led to more production. "I have a lot of juice left," the two-time Super Bowl champ told me. "And if I keep producing and playing the way that I'm playing, I can see myself continue to play. … A lot of it for me has been my mindset. And then I've always felt like I was underappreciated. Just that chip on my shoulder brings me back. I love playing on Sundays and I relate to people." Entering his third season with the Ravens, Van Noy said he's appreciative of his fellow teammates for an improved defense in 2024, including safety Kyle Hamilton, linebacker Roquan Smith and fellow pass rushers Odafe Oweh and Nnamdi Madubuike. Van Noy also gives credit to defensive coordinator Zach Orr for his growth in a new position after taking over for the departed Mike Macdonald last season. Van Noy believes Orr will one day make a great head coach. But the straw that stirs the drink for the Ravens is two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson. "He's a special dude," Van Noy said. "I tell everybody he's 1-of-1 as a human being. He's one of my favorite teammates. I just enjoy being around him. It doesn't matter who you are, he makes you feel like you're the man. And I appreciate a quarterback at his superstar level, being able to hang out with anybody. "It doesn't matter if you're a practice squad dude or Derrick Henry, he vibes with everybody. And I think that's what gravitates the whole locker room toward him and respects him so much, is he just hangs out." Eric D. Steelers sign GM Omar Khan to 3-year extension after offseason that included signing Aaron Rodgers
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers signed general manager Omar Khan to a three-year extension after an offseason that saw the team bring in quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Steelers announced the deal Thursday that will keep Khan with Pittsburgh through the 2028 season. He was hired as the team's GM in 2022. 'Omar and his team have done a great job over the past three years in constructing our roster through the NFL draft, strategic trades, and free agency,' Steelers president Art Rooney II said in a statement. 'We look forward to continuing that trend that will lead to even more success on the field.' Khan and coach Mike Tomlin are structuring their offense around Rodgers, the four-time NFL MVP who's returning for a 21st season. The 41-year-old Rodgers signed a one-year deal after a season in which Justin Fields and Russell Wilson combined to lead the Steelers to a 10-7 record and a playoff berth. To bolster the receiver spot, Pittsburgh acquired two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf from Seattle. The Steelers quickly signed him to a five-year deal to bring some stability at the position. Earlier this week, the team acquired All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith and a 2027 seventh-round draft pick from the Miami Dolphins for All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick. The next order of business for Pittsburgh could be working out a new deal with star linebacker T.J. Watt. The four-time All-Pro and 2021 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year is getting ready to enter the final season of the four-year extension he signed in September 2021. In April, Pittsburgh will host the NFL draft. The Steelers are scheduled to have a dozen selections to reshape their roster. A priority figures to be in finding a long-term solution at QB. 'I believe we are building a championship roster and look forward to the 2025 season and beyond as our goals continue to be to bring another Super Bowl to the city of Pittsburgh and our great fans,' said Khan, who's in his 25th season with the Steelers. ___
