Pakistan terror epicentre, must be put back on FATF Grey List for world peace: Asad
Asaduddin Owaisi
said that the country should be put back on the Grey List of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) for ensuring world peace.
"Terrorism emanates from Pakistan. They believe they have a religious sanction (to kill), which is completely wrong. Islam does not allow the killing of any person, but unfortunately that is their ideology. Terrorism survives on two factors – ideology and money. Unless Pakistan is brought on FATF Grey list, they will continue to sponsor terrorism," Owaisi said in Algeria while addressing the media, members of think tanks and the Indian diaspora.
The Hyderabad MP is part of an all-party delegation to Algeria sent by the govt of India to expose Pakistan-sponsored terrorism to the world. India has sent several all-party delegations to show its resolve against terrorism and garner international support following Operation Sindoor in response to the attack in Pahalgam where 26 tourists were killed on April 22.
Pointing out that Algeria had itself been a victim of Takfirism – a radical ideology that calls for killing those considered non-believers – Owaisi said: "We are together on this point.

Killings will come down once Pakistan is brought back in the Grey list (of FATF). We have the 2018 experience when Algeria and other countries helped India (on FATF)."
Citing the case of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi – the mastermind behind the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack – Owaisi said: "No country in the world would allow such special treatment to a terrorist. He became a father to a son while sitting in prison. But the trial progressed immediately when Pakistan was put on the Grey list (of FATF).
It's not only a question of South Asia. We are the fourth largest economy. What will happen? Do you want all this carnage to spread to different parts of South Asia? No.
It is in the interest of world peace to control Pakistan, which is the main sponsor of terrorism. It has to be brought back in the FATF Grey list."
Owaisi appealed to the global community to rein in Pakistan for openly promoting UN-proscribed terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) that is ideologically close to Al-Qaeda and also helped the terror group responsible for the 9/11 attacks in the US.
"Anyone who picks up arms is a terrorist. Can't allow any space to be given to any terrorist," he said.

Assam Crime Branch issues summons to journalists Siddharth Varadarajan, Karan Thapar
On a day the Supreme Court granted interim protection from arrest to journalist and The Wire editor Siddharth Varadarajan in a case lodged by the Assam police over an article on Operation Sindoor, the Crime Branch of the police in Guwahati issued summons to him and another senior journalist from the news portal, Karan Thapar. On August 12, a Supreme Court bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi granted the interim protection from arrest to Varadarajan in a case lodged by the Morigaon district police under Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with acts 'endangering sovereignty, unity and integrity of India.' The same day, the Crime Branch of the Assam Police in Guwahati issued separate summons to Varadarajan and Thapar in connection with an FIR registered at the Crime Branch police station in Guwahati, directing them to appear at the police station on August 22. While the summons do not contain details of the case against them, it mentions that this too has been registered under Section 152, along with other sections of the BNS pertaining to promoting enmity between different groups; publishing false or misleading information jeopardising the sovereignty unity and integrity or security of India; statements conducing to public mischief; and criminal conspiracy. The Indian Express contacted the Joint Commissioner of Police Guwahati, Ankur Jain, and DCP Crime Guwahati, but they did not share details of the complaint(s) based on which the FIR has been registered. Varadajan said that they filed a petition before the Supreme Court on Monday night. 'We have replied to the inspector who issued the summons both via speed post and WhatsApp, saying that his summons is bad in law because it does not contain a copy of the FIR, no details of what it is we are accused of doing, it doesn't even have the date of the FIR. We also reminded him that we had already moved the Supreme Court over an earlier FIR,' he told The Indian Express. In the written response to the inspector, he has requested a copy of the FIR 'before proceeding any further in this matter'. 'In the meanwhile, I am happy to assist the investigation in accordance with the procedure established by law, and you may also question me virtually or in Delhi (my home town and place of residence) if I am provided a copy of the FIR beforehand,' states the letter.

India needs to grow 8% yearly amid geopolitical uncertainties to reach target, says Finance Ministry
The government has set a target to make India a developed economy by 2047, under the 'Viksit Bharat' banner, to meet this goal, the Finance Ministry said that the country would have to grow by 8 per cent each year over the next 10 years, Reuters reported. The ministry told lawmakers that over the next decade, India's economy needs to expand around 8 per cent annually amid rising geopolitical uncertainties. It expects this growth to come from domestic demand and investments, the report added. 'Ideally, the Indian economy will need to grow by around 8 per cent in real terms every year, at least for a decade,' the finance ministry said in its reply to a parliamentary committee in June, according to a report released on August 19. The government estimates India's growth at 6.3-6.8 per cent in this financial year through March 31 (FY 2024-25), broadly in line with the 6.5 per cent growth recorded last year, but much lower than the 9.2 per cent notched in FY23-24 The comments align with economists estimates of 8-9 per cent annual growth requirement for India to hit the Viksit Bharat 2047 target, the report added. Further, the ministry added that in order to become a developed economy by the targeted date, India would also have pump its investment rate to around 35 per cent of GDP from the close to 31 per cent at present. Amid an uncertain trade backdrop, including the 50 per cent total tariffs from the United States on Indian goods, New Delhi is trying to spur domestic demand through planned consumer tax cuts, following personal tax reductions in February, while the central bank has cut rates by 100 basis points this year. The 50 per cent tariff could shave growth by up to 40 basis points in 2025-26, the report noted. Notably, the ministry's estimates were made in June, before the US imposed additional 25 per cent tariffs (taking total to 50 per cent) on India, which US President Donald Trump said was 'punishment' for buying oil from Russia. India-US trade talks faced a setback earlier this month as New Delhi did not agree to give Washington access to its vast agriculture and dairy markets. India is prioritising enhanced opportunities for its labour-intensive exports, including textiles, apparel and leather goods, the finance ministry said. (With inputs from Reuters)
