Actor David Hekili Kenui Bell, who starred in the recently-released live-action remake of the children's Disney classic Lilo & Stitch, has tragically died. He was 57 years old.
'It is with a heavy heart I share that my sweet, generous, talented, funny, brilliant and handsome little brother David H. K. Bell will spend today in the company of our Heavenly Father,' the actor's sister, Jalene Kanani Bell shared in an announcement on social media.
'I've been waiting for the words and mindset to properly express the joy of a human, and Prince of a Man he was, but fate pushed my hand this morning by a pre-scheduled Father's Day newsletter honoring the men in our lives,' she continued in her statement released on June 15.
The film, which was released in the U.S. on May 23, stars Bell as Big Hawaiian Dude. Jalene shared that he had treated her and the rest of his family to a screening of the film just 'two short weeks' before he passed.
Bell was a Hawaiian local who went to Kalani High School and was living in Waimea prior to his death. He had previously held minor TV roles, appearing in episodes of Hawaii Five-O and Magnum P.I..
'David loved being an actor, doing voiceovers,' Jalene continued in her online post. 'The film industry and entertainment was so exciting to him and I loved that he enjoyed the arts.'
She added that it's Bell's voice passengers hear over the PA system on arrival at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole, where he previously worked as an assistant airport superintendent.
Bell's role as 'Big Hawaiian Dude' in the Lilo & Stitch remake sees him comedically drop his shaved ice as an alien portal opens up. He was enthusiastic about the opportunity to star on the big screen, posting to Instagram at the end of last month to share his excitement.
'Now, Mahalo to everyone who worked on this film! I knew it would be special to attend a Cast and CREW screening and it didn't disappoint!' Bell wrote. 'It was so awesome to see so many of the true stars in my opinion, our local crew in Hawaii.'
Bell's cause of death has not been announced.

Streaming viewership exceeded cable and broadcast combined for the first time last month, report says

In Brief Streaming services surpassed both cable and network television in total viewership among people in the U.S. for the first time in May, according to a new report from Nielsen. Last month, streaming services accounted for 44.8% of all television viewership, their largest share to date. Nielsen found that total viewership for cable and network television accounted for 44.2% of all television viewership. When compared to May 2021, streaming usage has increased 71%, while broadcast is down 21% and cable is down 39%. The report also shows that YouTube took the crown for highest viewership with 12.5%. Netflix followed with 7.5% of total viewership for the month. Nielsen notes that free streaming services has been a major driver of streaming's overall success: PlutoTV, Roku Channel, and Tubi accounted for a combined 5.7% of total TV viewing in May.

Max will show autoplaying video previews picked by AI

Max — soon to be called HBO Max again — is rolling out an update that automatically plays video previews when you hover over shows and movies. The video previews are launching to users in the US now, but Max is still working on an 'AI-assisted' tool to pick the clips that go in them. In the 'coming weeks,' Max says its AI tool will automatically identify 'standout' scenes from its shows and movies, which its team will then use to choose the clips featured in video previews. 'This AI-driven technology will enable us to identify Drop-in Moments for the vast catalog of content on Max and significantly reduce the manual time needed to curate previews,' Avi Saxena, Warner Bros. Discovery's chief technology officer, said in the press release. The streaming service will also include an option to turn off the audio or video in the autoplaying content, similar to Netflix. Max updated its interface in January to move the options from its top menu bar to the left side of the screen — basically the opposite of what Netflix is doing in its upcoming homepage redesign. Max will have another big change sometime this summer, as that's when the switch back to HBO Max will be official.

In Pixar's Toy Story 5, the Big New Villain Is a Tablet

Pixar is giving its old-school toys a decidedly modern antagonist in its fifth installment of the beloved Toy Story movies: a tablet. During the studio's Friday showcase at Annecy's International Animation Film Festival in France, chief creative officer Pete Docter revealed that Toy Story 5's villain is Lily Pad, a "sneaky" and "prickly" tablet that convinces 8-year-old Bonnie Anderson that friends and games on a device beat dusty ol' toys in the closet. The first concept art shows the frog-faced tablet looming over Buzz, Jessie and Bullseye like a touchscreen tyrant of the toy box. As you can probably foresee, this is a battle between analog toys and always-on tech. (You can stream Toy Story movies one through four on Disney Plus.) The Lily Pad reveal topped a jam-packed Walt Disney Animation and Pixar showcase, where the company rolled out updated release dates, never-before-seen footage and a couple of all-new original films. Toy Story 5: tech is the enemy The premise of Toy Story 5 is that Anderson gets a Lily Pad for school chat and online games. But the tablet decides that Anderson's toys, including Woody, Buzz and Jessie, are holding her back. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack are all returning, while Ernie Hudson steps in as Combat Carl, honoring the late Carl Weathers. Docter shared the opening scene of Toy Story 5, which shows a crate full of stranded Buzz Lightyears trying to escape a desert island. Toy Story 5 is set for release on June 19, 2026, more than 30 years after the first movie came out. It's set a couple of years after the events of Toy Story 4, but no word yet on how Woody, who departed with Bo Peep at the end of that movie, will return to Bonnie's house -- or whether Bo Peep will be in the fifth movie. Toy Story 5 starts off with Buzz Lightyear action figures, stuck in toy mode, searching for Star Command (shown here in concept art). Pixar Pixar's two new original films: Hoppers and Gatto Daniel Chong's Hoppers, scheduled for March 6, 2026, turns an eco-heist into a critter-powered caper: 14-year-old Mabel uploads her mind into a robotic beaver to save her local pond from a highway project. Gatto, slated for summer 2027, centers on Nero, a black cat in Venice who's burned through most of his nine lives doing jobs for a feline mob boss. Now, questioning whether he's wasted those lives, Nero stumbles into an unexpected friendship that could finally give him purpose. The film will be shot in a "living storybook" style, which is new to Pixar. New footage from Zootopia 2 and Elio Jared Bush, Walt Disney Animation Studios' chief creative officer and director-writer of Zootopia 2, showed some new footage and images from the anticipated sequel, which should come out in November. The audience also got to watch a 27-minute sizzle reel from Elio, the cosmic coming-of-age adventure, which opens June 20.
