Mothers carry heavy load to ensure children's success
KOTA KINABALU: Mothers today carry an increasingly heavy burden to ensure their children's success amid daily pressures and the rising cost of living.
Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said young mothers today must deal with work and family pressures, financial constraints, a lack of personal time, and the burden of responsibility for their children's education.
'Mothers must also be more cautious and balanced, especially when guiding their children on the use of technology,' she reminded in a statement issued today in conjunction with the national-level Mother's Day Celebration for 2025.
Nancy said in light of the current challenges, the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) has introduced the National Women's Policy 2025-2030, themed 'Empowering Women, Strengthening the Nation', to support women and mothers across all segments of society in the country.
She said the policy outlines various initiatives, such as the Kasih Ibu Tunggal programme, a skills incubator for single mothers, MamaCare, the Wanita Bangkit programme, the Two Years Exit programme, Gig@bit, and Volvo Iron Women.
Earlier, Nancy attended the 2025 national-level Mother's Day Celebration, themed 'Sentuhan Kasih Ibu', held at the Sabah International Convention Centre here.
The event, organised by KPWKM through the National Population and Family Development Board, was officiated by the wife of the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah, Toh Puan Faridah Tussin. The Sabah Chief Minister's wife, Datin Seri Juliah Salag, also attended the event.
According to the statement, the 2025 'Anugerah Ibu Inspirasi' (Inspirational Mother Award) was presented to Kasmirah Jaafar, a seamstress from Bekok, Johor, but has spent over half of her life in Sabah.
The award recognises Kasmirah's struggles and sacrifices as a single mother raising five children who became teachers, doctors, and engineers.
This year's Mother's Day celebration also introduced the 'Ikon Ibu Muda' (Young Mother Icon) award, which was presented to celebrity Bella Astillah, whose real name is Dayang Ara Nabellah Awang Astillah.
The award honours the 'Bella Spirit', recognising the young mother's resilience in using her talents to rise above a challenging past and raise her children with love and care.

KPWKM's 2025 Kembara Kasih Roadshow reaches over 10,000 Sabahans across six districts

The outreach programme, which began in Tuaran on May 16, successfully reached and benefitted over 10,000 residents. Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the initiative brought together 34 programmes and services that were delivered at various roadshow stops, offering direct assistance to communities in need. 'Kembara Kasih also included visits to 14 clients under the Social Welfare Department (JKM) and several families identified by the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) along the route,' she said. 'We hope these visits help ease their burdens, offer encouragement, and inspire them to move forward and rebuild their lives.' Nancy highlighted that Kembara Kasih 2025 focused on five core pillars, namely empowering family institutions; advancing women's professionalism; enhancing community capacity and potential; strengthening community well-being; and promoting growth in the care sector. As part of family empowerment efforts, LPPKN organised several programmes, including a parenting character development forum in Penampang; a men's well-being programme at the Marine Police Force headquarters in Lahad Datu; and the Kasih Remaja@Kafeteen programme at SMK Sri Nangka in Tuaran. To support women's professional development, the Zero Tolerance for Violence programme organised by the Department of Women's Development (JPW) was held at the Papar Community Hall and drew more than 700 participants. Minister: Sarawak gazettes 14 new heritage sites, receives historic artefacts

The Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister said these sites include the Rumah Panjang Melanau Kampong Sok in Matu; Rumah Sri Tanjung, Tanjung Lobang in Miri; Sacred Heart Church, Sungai Bawan in Kanowit; Makam Dato Permaisuri in Miri; Pusara Ali Wallace, Kampung Jaie in Sadong Jaya; and Shariff Skrang Cemetery, Kampung Igan in Matu. Other gazetted sites, buildings, monuments and underwater heritage are the Kuching City Mosque site; Beting Maro battle site; Batu Brooke coal mine, Gunung Ngeli in Simunjan; Batu Ritong in Pa' Lungan, Bario; Kampung Jangkar battle site in Lundu; Tuang Schist Semeba in Kuching; Folded Schist Demak in Kuching; and the Japanese Landing Craft, Brighton Beach in Miri, he said. Speaking at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting, Abdul Karim in his ministerial winding-up speech also said that JMS, as the guardian of Sarawak and Borneo shared heritage, had recently received five artefact donations, including two Lun Bawang 1960s sunhats. 'The sunhats belonged to Bill and Pam Lavery, and we received them from their son, John Lavery. The donor claimed that the authentic sunhats were obtained during the formation of Malaysia in 1963. 'Bill Lavery was posted to Limbang that same year as a teacher and later served as headmaster under the Colombo Plan of External Aid of the Canadian government to Sarawak. 'The Lavery family left Sarawak in 1965. The hats were later passed on to their son, John Lavery, who entrusted it to the Sarawak Museum for safekeeping,' he said. Another artefact, he said, was an old parang from Tebakang, Serian, which JMS had received from Mangu Bueng. 'The donor claimed that this parang has been with the Bueng's family for almost 100 years and it originally belonged to a group of headhunters who confronted Bueng and his wife in the early 1900s. 'In the ensuing fight, Bueng fought bravely and took one of their parangs. He brought it back to Kampung Tebakang Bidayuh, where it became a treasured family heirloom,' he said, adding that the parang remained with the Bueng's family, passed down through generations. He added that JMS also received two unglazed ceramic vases from Santubong from donor Mohd Rizal Bujang who claimed that the pottery was discovered in the 1970s by his late father Bujang Abdullah together with the late Ibni Zen and the late Othman Zen while fishing off the coast of Santubong. Its Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the beneficiaries included those who attended and participated in 34 programmes held or accessed services provided at the various counters set up at the Kembara Kasih roadshow locations. 'Kembara Kasih also visited 14 clients of the Social Welfare Department (JKM) and the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) along the convoy route. We hope these visits will help ease their burdens, offer motivation, and encourage them to rebuild their lives and move forward,' she said in a statement. The 2025 Kembara Kasih roadshow toured Zone 1, including Tuaran, Papar, and Penampang, from May 16 to 18, before moving on to Zone 2, covering Lahad Datu, Kunak and Tawau, from May 22 to 24. Nancy said that the Kembara Kasih focuses on five key elements: empowering family institutions, promoting and enhancing women's professionalism, developing community capacity and potential, strengthening community well-being, and advancing the care sector. She said that under the family empowerment element, LPPKN carried out three programmes: forum on character for parents in Penampang; men's wellbeing programme at the Marine Police Force headquarters in Lahad Datu, and the KASIH Remaja @ Kafeteen at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sri Nangka, Tuaran. As for promoting and enhancing women's professionalism, the Zero Tolerance for Violence programme was held at the Papar Community Hall, attracting over 700 participants. 'We are collaborating with the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives to organise sales events for female entrepreneurs, providing them opportunities to expand their markets and boost the local economy,' she said. Additionally, five programmes under the community capacity and potential development element were implemented by JKM, including the Intergenerational Mind Image programme and the inauguration of the senior citizens activity centre (PAWE) in Benoni, Papar. Other programmes were the child protection advocacy at SMK Limbanak, Penampang and SK Kampung Selamat, Kunak; the 'My Special Got Talent' programme for persons with disabilities (PwDs) at Dewan Sri Perdana, Lahad Datu; and a plaque handover ceremony for registered nurseries at Taska Superkids, Tawau. In terms of strengthening community well-being, Nancy said that the Yayasan Kebajikan Negara (YKN) implemented four Jelajah Kasih Local Social Support Centres (PSSS) and successfully provided services to more than 3,000 clients. 'Interestingly, Kembara Kasih KPWKM 2025 also made history with the launch of Sabah's first mobile PSSS,' she said. Yesterday, Nancy, in her speech at the closing ceremony held here, expressed gratitude for the smooth running of the programme, attributing its success to the strong commitment and support from all parties, including the Sabah government.
