Remarkably, Shah Rukh Khan's performance in Gowariker's Swades was not recognized at the prestigious awards in 2004. Fans are now celebrating this 'full circle' moment.
Many people believe that Shah Rukh Khan's performance in Swades in 2004 was one of his best. The film followed Mohan Bhargava (Shah Rukh Khan), a NASA engineer who returns to India and rediscovers his roots. The film, which received high praise from critics, continues to be a compelling and complex portrayal of India's sociocultural landscape.
However, Saif Ali Khan won the National Film Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role that year for his performance in 'Hum Tum', a choice that still causes discussions and dissatisfies viewers. Jury head Sudhir Mishra said Saif's performance displayed 'ease' and freshness. Shah Rukh joked that he "should have got it" in response to the snub during a public event.
21 years later, Shah Rukh Khan's performance in Jawan earned him the National Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
Ashutosh Gowariker, the director of Swades and the jury chairman for the feature films category, presented his award. When fans noticed this fortunate coincidence, they were overjoyed and shared their happiness on social media.
In an interview with NDTV, Ashutosh later said, 'It's amazing. It's quite historic that one of the biggest stars of India and Indian cinema, after such a long, prolific career, has got an award for best acting at the National Film Awards in a year when he had three films.

Him getting the award for Jawan is great because he has played a double role in that."
Meanwhile, after wining the award, Shah Rukh Khan, shared a heartfelt video, thanking fans, family and directors, for showing him their unwavering support. The 'Jawaan' actor made this video, despite sustaining an injury on the sets of his upcoming movie, 'King'. Shah Rukh Khan thanked the directors and writers of 2023, with a special shoutout to Jawan director Atlee. He also thanked his wife and kids for dealing with his obsession with cinema.

Lilliput compares SRK's acting in Zero to Kamal Haasan: Not even the dust on his feet

Actor Liliput recently shared his views on Anand L Rai's 'Zero' (2018), which depicted a protagonist with dwarfism. He criticised actor Shah Rukh Khan's portrayal in the film, while comparing his performance to actor Kamal Haasan's acting prowess in 'Appu Raja (1989).In an interview with Red FM Podcasts, Lilliput said, "Someone who is not blind will act like they are blind but for a person who is not a dwarf, how will you act like a dwarf? Because dwarfs are normal, their hand movements are normal, they laugh and think like anyone else, they only look a different way. So how will you act that out? You will make him look smaller technically."advertisement"We know you are good looking and cute so our impression of what you are ends there. We are not looking at a dwarf, we are looking at a hero who has been made to look like a dwarf via visual effects,' he said and asked, 'And what is your script trying to say," the actor went on. While drawing parallels between Khan and Haasan's performances in 'Zero' and 'Appu Raja' respectively, the 'Mirzapur 3' actor said, "You look at Appu Raja's intelligence. Kamal Haasan picked out the details of the physicality of a dwarf person. Dwarfs are a little distorted, their fingers are smaller, a little thicker, arms, face and feet are different so when you are not able to leave an impact, then why are you making it? And how could you think that you would leave an impact?""Kamal ji ki aap copy kar rahe ho, unki acting ki. Charno ki dhool bhi nahi ho aap (You are copying Kamal ji. You imitate his him. And you are not even equal to the dirt on his feet)," he Rukh recently won a National Award for Best Actor for Atlee's 'Jawan'. He shared the award with actor Vikrant Massey for Vidhu Vinod Chopra's '12th Fail'.Shah Rukh will next be seen in Siddharth Anand's 'King', featuring his actor-daughter Suhana Khan, Abhay Verma, Abhishek Bachchan, Jaideep Ahlawat, Jackie Shroff and others in key roles.- EndsTrending Reel

Lilliput slams Shah Rukh Khan's performance as a dwarf in Zero: 'Not even equal to dirt on Kamal Haasan's feet'

Lilliput criticizes Shah Rukh Khan's performance in Zero. He finds it inauthentic compared to Kamal Haasan's Appu Raja. Lilliput says SRK's star image overshadowed the character. He questions the film's message and SRK's preparation. Lilliput compares SRK's acting to Kamal Haasan's, finding SRK lacking. Shah Rukh Khan recently won a National Film Award for Jawan. Shah Rukh Khan 's performance in Zero continues to draw criticism years after the film's release. Actor and writer Lilliput, who has often spoken about the portrayal of dwarfism in cinema, recently shared his thoughts in a podcast. He felt SRK's role in Zero lacked authenticity and even compared it unfavourably to Kamal Haasan 's work in Appu Raja. 'Camera tricks can't replace realism' In a recent podcast appearance, Lilliput criticised the portrayal of dwarfism in films by non-dwarf actors, calling it inauthentic. He pointed out that unlike conditions such as blindness, which can be mimicked through performance, dwarfism doesn't require behavioural imitation—since individuals with dwarfism express themselves like anyone else. According to him, using camera tricks to shrink an actor physically doesn't translate into a convincing or respectful portrayal. SRK's stardom got in the way He further criticised SRK's portrayal in Zero, saying that SRK's superstar image overshadowed the authenticity of the character with dwarfism. He felt the audience couldn't see a genuine portrayal, as SRK still appeared as a hero made to look smaller using visual effects. He also questioned the film's intent and message, suggesting that the script lacked clarity in its representation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo L illiput drew a comparison between Kamal Haasan's Appu Raja and Shah Rukh's Zero, praising Kamal for thoughtfully incorporating the physical nuances of a person with dwarfism into his performance. He felt Kamal's portrayal reflected a deep understanding of the character's physicality—like shorter, thicker fingers and distinct body proportions—while suggesting that Shah Rukh lacked similar preparation. Lilliput questioned the purpose of attempting such a role without delivering an impactful or convincing performance. 'SRK tried to copy Kamal, but fell short' Lilliput went on to compare the acting calibre of SRK and Kamal Haasan, stating that SRK appeared to imitate Kamal's approach but lacked the depth and skill to match it. He bluntly remarked that Shah Rukh wasn't even close to the level of Kamal's craft, let alone capable of replicating his iconic performance. Shah Rukh Khan recently bagged the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in Jawan, directed by Atlee. He shares the honour with Vikrant Massey , who earned the award for his acclaimed role in 12th Fail.

Exclusive: Abir Gulaal Actor Vaani Kapoor On Diljit Dosanjh- Sardaar Ji 3 Row, "He Hasn't Broken Any Law"

New Delhi: Months after the release of her film Abir Gulaal was stalled in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack (April 22, 2025), actress Vaani Kapoor has reacted to the Diljit Dosanjh- Sardaar ji 3 controversy which dominated the headlines once it was revealed that Pakistani star Hania Aamir featured in a key role in the Punjabi movie. Addressing the gravity of the situation, Vaani tells NDTV in an exclusive interview, "I don't want it to be a clickbait conversation". Despite facing several threats from different film bodies in India, Diljit Dosanjh released Sardaar Ji 3 overseas on June 27. As one of the producers of the film, Diljit could take a call on his film, whereas Vaani's Abir Gulaal was caught in the crosshairs. When we ask Vaani to share her thoughts about Diljit's decision to release Sardaar Ji 3 globally, she says, "I am assuming his film was shot before the atrocious attack and I am assuming as a producer his money must have been stuck. "I guess, some 100 technicians were involved in making the film. The situation was different when the film was shot. I don't think he was meaning to disrespect the nation. He is a global star... He is looked up to globally. He has taken measures as per whatever he thought was suitable to him. But I don't think any laws have been broken, right?" The Fate Of Sardaar Ji 3 And Abir Gulaal Vaani Kapoor was paired opposite popular Pakistani star Fawad Khan in the film Abir Gulaal. Slated for a May 9 release in India, the release of the movie was delayed indefinitely after the Pahalgam attack. After the attack, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), an organisation of movie artists, called for a boycott on Abir Gulaal. FWICE is the same organisation that banned Pakistani artists, singers and technicians from working in the Indian film industry after the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, which claimed the lives of 35 Indian paramilitary personnel. When the India-Pakistan diplomatic ties once again took a hit after the Pahalgam terror attack in April, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting also stalled the release of Abir Gulaal in India. Diljit Dosanjh's Sardaar Ji 3 cast featured Pakistani actress Hania Aamir starring opposite the actor-singer. The teaser of the Punjabi film didn't feature her, but the trailer's release on June 22 revealed Hania Aamir's involvement with Sardaar Ji 3. Following the revelation, Diljit Dosanjh faced threats from FWICE, including stalling the release of the film. However, he stuck to his decision and the film released in theatres (excluding India) on June 27. Sardaar Ji 3 emerged as one of the highest-grossing Punjabi films overseas. It minted approx Rs 150 crore at the box office.
