Zurhaar the late hero as Kangaroos escape major scare
The wayward Eagles kicked 1.13 across the first two and a half quarters of Sunday's match before finally hitting their groove to surge to an 18-point lead early in the final term.
North Melbourne had been error-riddled and looked one-dimensional until that point, but exploded with the final four goals of the match - including two to Cameron Zurhaar - to secure the 9.8 (62) to 6.16 (52) win.

Finn O'Sullivan started the four-goal run when he made the most of a 50m penalty to kick truly, before Zurhaar kicked his first of the match to make it a six-point game with nine minutes remaining.
West Coast clung on dearly for the next seven minutes until Zurhaar took a brave pack mark to give North the lead.
Captain Jy Simpkin iced the win with a running snap in the final 45 seconds.
The result means North Melbourne (3-8-1) are now two and a half wins ahead of last-placed West Coast (1-12).
Richmond (3-10) are two wins clear of the Eagles.
Not only did North Melbourne snare the win, but they will also collect a cool $1 million for "hosting'' the match in Bunbury, a coastal town two hours drive south of Perth.
It's part of a three-year deal in which North Melbourne will play two home games a season in WA, including next week's clash with Fremantle at Optus Stadium.
The only downer for North Melbourne out of Sunday's match was a game-ending injury to defender Charlie Comben, who was subbed out in the third quarter after copping a painful knee to the shoulder in a marking contest.
Paul Curtis kicked three goals for North Melbourne, while Tristan Xerri was huge in the ruck with 37 hitouts, 10 clearances and 22 disposals.
Former Eagle Jack Darling was held scoreless from 10 disposals.
Eagles co-captain Liam Duggan tallied a team-high 23 disposals, Elijah Hewett racked up 22 disposals and six clearances, while forward Jack Williams kicked two goals.
North Melbourne kicked the only three goals of the opening quarter - including two to Curtis - despite losing the inside-50 count 21-10.
West Coast's 0.5 was a poor return for a quarter they dominated, with Archer Reid's close-range shocker summing up their ineptitude in front of goal.
The Eagles had 0.8 to their name and had just entered their forward-50 arc for a staggering 34th time when Williams finally broke the goal drought with a close-range set shot late in the second quarter.
The goal reduced the margin to seven points at halftime, with North holding the lead despite being pummelled 39-17 in the inside-50 count.
West Coast had a woeful 1.13 to their name before producing a 4.1 spurt to finish the third quarter.
But just as the game looked won for the Eagles, North hit back hard in a thrilling finish.

And it's thrown up a curious dilemma around his NSW teammate Max King, who is eligible to represent both Australia and England in this year's end-of-season Ashes series. Whichever country he chooses could have a massive bearing on his Origin future. Haas and King were starting props for the Blues in this year's series defeat to the Maroons, with the latter earning his first rep call-up off the back of strong NRL form with the Bulldogs. But while Haas is free to continue representing NSW at Origin level after deciding to switch his national allegiance to Samoa, King would not be free to do so if he chooses to play for England. King is yet to play Test footy for either country but with Haas defecting from the Kangaroos and Tino Fa'asuamaleaui potentially following suit, it's opened the door for the Bulldogs prop to be picked in Kevin Walters' Australian squad for the Ashes. That would see King follow in the footsteps of his famous grandfather Johnny King, who won 15 caps for the Kangaroos and played in three Ashes series. But if King is overlooked for Walters' Australian squad, then choosing to play for England would effectively end his Origin career as the rules currently stand. King admitted before his Origin call-up this year that he remained open to accepting a call-up from England, which is the country he was born in and where his mother is from. "My mum's side of the family would love that," King told AAP in April. "I always say I'm half English and half Aussie... I'd love to be able to get a call off anyone. The phone is always on and I'm always available to any caller." Max King Test dilemma looms ahead of Ashes series However, the Canterbury star's maiden Origin call-up this year reportedly took him 'off guard' and forced King to shift his stance on playing for England. Seven league reporter Jelisa Apps said she spoke to King about the situation recently and the 28-year-old 'made it clear the Kangaroos are his first choice' but a huge dilemma looms if King is not picked in Walters' Ashes squad and chooses to play for England. Haas is free to keep playing Origin because Samoa is classified as a Tier-2 nation but because England is Tier-1, it means King can't continue playing for NSW if he accepts an England call-up. It's a similar situation to Roosters star Victor Radley, who was born in Sydney and has lived there his whole life, but is barred from representing NSW because he chose to honour his family heritage and play for England. SEN's Jimmy Smith summed up the Haas and King situations perfectly, after pointing out the unfair nature of the current Origin eligibility rules. "So think about it from this point of view: the two starting front-rowers from NSW have the opportunity to play elsewhere," Smith began by saying. "One of them says 'yes I want to go and play for Samoa' and he can still play in State of Origin. The other says 'oh yes I'll go and play for England but he cannot play State of Origin. That doesn't seem right." Calls to change Origin rules after recent defections League 'Immortal' Mal Meninga and Matty Johns are among those who've embraced the push by Origin stars to represent the nations of their heritage, and agree it strengthens the international game. But many feel the eligibility rules should be changed so Australian-born players who also have English or Kiwi backgrounds can also represent those countries and still represent the state they grew up in. 'If we were to change the rules, it would only be for New Zealand and English players. They're the tier-one countries impacted. (Players from) tier-two nations like Samoa and Tonga can still play State of Origin and represent those nations.'

Injured Rabada ruled out of ODI series for South Africa. Australia fields first in Game 1
CAIRNS, Australia — Pace bowler Kagiso Rabada was ruled out with an ankle injury in a major setback for South Africa just as the three-game ODI series got underway against Australia on Tuesday. The Australians, coming off a 2-1 win in the T20 series , won the toss and elected to field in Cairns to start the one-day international portion of the tour. This is the first ODI between the teams since Australia beat South Africa in the 2023 World Cup semifinals. Their scheduled Champions Trophy meeting in March was washed out. Power hitter Dewald Brevis and allrounder Prenelan Subrayen were selected to make their ODI debuts for South Africa, and Temba Bavuma returned for his first match since leading the Proteas to the World Test Championship with a victory over Australia in the final at Lord's. Cooper Cronk's blunt advice for DCE after worrying scenes for Manly Sea Eagles
Storm and Roosters great Cooper Cronk has warned Daly Cherry-Evans about the risk he faces of playing a season too long in his career with concerns growing around the halfback's performances. On Monday, highlighted Cherry-Evans' lack of physicality during a try in his side's 26-12 loss to the Tigers on the weekend. Fans noted a moment in the game when Cherry-Evans appeared to put little effort into a tackle on Sunia Turuva before the Tigers winger went on to score. Turuva was on odds to score considering he was so close to the try line after the break. But instead of throwing his body at Turuva to try and bring him down he hesitated with the Tigers winger strolling over the line. And Queensland great Cronk has analysed the same situation with some telling comments. While the Manly captain may not be as fast as he once was, Cronk believes he can't shy away from his responsibilities. 'The ball goes through here and Daly has an opportunity to come back through here on Turuva, and missed him. That's a hips tackles, legs tackle every day of the week,' Cronk said on Fox Sports. Cronk also offered some advice regarding Cherry-Evans's next move. The 36-year-old will leave Manly at the end of the season, but his next move is unknown. While he is heavily linked to the Roosters, there are also claims he could retire. And the Queensland great wanted Cherry-Evans to find his physicality if he wants to play one more season. 'The advice to Daly is, mate, if you want to play on, do whatever — but find your physicality,' Cronk said. 'Because I know at the back end of my career, I limped to the finish line. Getting a whack (in attack), squaring up defenders wasn't enjoyable at 36 years of age. But, you have to do it because it created space for other people. Once I stepped away from it, that would have hurt the team's performance. 'As a half (in defence), once you lose that physical nature, no shoulder contact, falling over, you're missing the contest.' Cronk did praise Cherry-Evans as a Manly legend and hoped he received his accolades this weekend in his 350th game. Manly have games against the Dolphins, Dragons and Warriors to finish the season, and would need to win all three to have any chance of surging into the playoffs. And since Manly fans have become fed-up with the string of losses, some are calling for a change in the halves. Joey Walsh 'more than ready' for Manly selection Some Manly fans have been calling for young Joey Walsh to get an opportunity in the No.7 jersey considering Cherry-Evans won't be at the club next year. Some Sea Eagles supporters feel the team should be looking to blood the youngster early as they prepare for 2026 considering it's unlikely they'll be playing NRL finals footy this season. Speaking to last week, Walsh's manager said he's more than ready for NRL level if called upon. "Joey's a very ambitious, confident, charismatic kind of a kid, so if it was up to him, he'd want to play and play now," Cameron Day told Yahoo Sport Australia. "He feels he's ready to go and would love to get that phone call any day. "He's a high-achieving alpha dog who is ready for anything that's thrown at him. But selections are none of my business. That's a coach's decision and there is no pressure whatsoever from anyone at our end or Joey's. "Those experienced halves in front of him have been great to him and he's learning from them, and if it rolls that way and he doesn't get picked this year, that's no stress at all. He's very much a team player and will play where he gets picked."
