'Terror will never defeat India's spirit': Tourists defy fear, return to Pahalgam

India Today29-04-2025
Kashmir, which fell silent a week ago after the deadly Pahalgam terror attacks, is seeing fleeting signs of life again. Tourists are trickling back to the "Paradise on Earth" as Bollywood stars and ministers lead the appeal to urge citizens not to abandon Kashmir and refuse to let terror dictate their decisions. The Pahalgam carnage, which left 25 tourists and a Kashmiri dead, wasn't just an attack on civilians but a strike at an industry that is the lifeline of Kashmir. Tourism accounts for nearly 7-8 per cent of Jammu and Kashmir's GDP. It is even more for the Valley. advertisementThus, visuals of tourists leaving Pahalgam in droves after the attack raised fears of people shunning Kashmir altogether. In fact, the Kashmir Hotel Association said 80% of the bookings were cancelled immediately.
However, a week on, the beginning of the return to normalcy in Kashmir seems to be well on track.'NORMALCY ROARS BACK'Union Minister Jitendra Singh led the campaign to instil confidence among tourists, posting a video from Kashmir showing people enjoying the scenic beauty of the valley and visiting tourist spots."Terror will never defeat the spirit of India. After the cowardly terror attack, hundreds of fearless tourists thronged Guldanada and Chattergalla, embracing the beauty of our land. Bhadarwah-Pathankot highway reopens after 4 days - normalcy roars back," Singh tweeted.Terror will never defeat the spirit of IndiaAfter the cowardly #PahalgamTerrorAttack, hundreds of fearless tourists thronged Guldanada and Chattergalla, embracing the beauty of our land.#Bhadarwah-Pathankot highway reopens after 4 days — normalcy roars back. pic.twitter.com/937QTPO5zy— Dr Jitendra Singh (@DrJitendraSingh) April 29, 2025advertisementEven Pahalgam saw a handful of visitors and foreigners at the weekend as shops opened shutters. However, security personnel and police were seen in every nook and corner of the picturesque town. Tourists, however, mostly wandered in groups."We have been here for 3–4 days and we feel very safe. Kashmir is beautiful and safe... People are very kind. We are a group of 13 people... We heard about the incident one day before we arrived in Kashmir. We came here anyway," said a tourist from Croatia.BOLLYWOOD URGES PEOPLE TO VISIT PARADISE ON EARTHAmong those encouraging tourists to come to Pahalgam and Kashmir was popular Bollywood actor Atul Kulkarni. Kulkarni, who visited Pahalgam days after the attack, said one should respond to the terrorists by coming to Kashmir in even larger numbers. In a series of posts on Instagram, Kulkarni is seen enjoying a shikara ride in Dal Lake, having local delicacies at a shop and visiting a Kashmiri bat factory. The message was clear: Kashmir is ours. Courage is heavier than fear.Actor Sunil Shetty also exhorted people not to cancel their trips to Kashmir. He even said his next holiday will be to Kashmir."All should plan their holidays to Kashmir. We have to visit Kashmir as it was, is and will remain a part of our country. We will not be frightened. We have to be fearless and convey a message to terrorists," Shetty said.advertisementBringing tourism back on track has been the Centre's priority after the abrogation of Article 270 in 2019. It has coincided with a rise in footfall year-on-year.According to data, the tourist footfall in 2024 was 2.95 million, a rise from 2.71 million visitors in 2023 and 2.67 million in 2022.

Lateral entry not subject to reservations, government informs Rajya Sabha

Rajya Sabha NEW DELHI: Ministry of personnel on Thursday said 63 appointments made in central government departments since 2018 through lateral entry, were not subject to reservation as they were made for specific assignments, keeping in view the candidates' specialised knowledge and domain expertise. In reply to a written question in Rajya Sabha, junior minister for personnel Jitendra Singh said "since each of these appointments were made against single-post cadre, reservation is not applicable in view of Supreme Court judgement in the case 'PGIMER, Chandigarh vs. Faculty Association and Ors'." "Accordingly category-wise data of the appointed officers has not been maintained," he added. The minister said of the 63 officers appointed in three cycles (2018, 2021 and 2023) so far at the level of joint secretary, deputy secretary and director, 43 are currently in position across various ministries/departments. Following a political row over the policy for reservation of SCs, STs and OBCs not being followed in lateral appointments, UPSC had in Aug last year cancelled an advertisement for recruitment to 45 posts through this route. The UPSC action followed a communication from Singh, urging the commission to cancel the advertisement as "this (reservation) aspect needs to be reviewed and reformed in context of PM's focus on ensuring social justice".

AAP student wing's show of strength takes campus norms for a ride at PU

1 2 Chandigarh: The Student Centre on Thursday saw another round of pre-poll spectacle, this time with Aam Aadmi Party's Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP) putting up what looked less like a simple panel declaration and more like a show of strength. Even as Panjab University has been claiming to restrict outsider entry on campus, several could be seen mingling with the crowds as groups marched in from the Library roundabout, shouting slogans for different "leaders." Stickers were flung into the air along the way, adding to the charged atmosphere. The party named Sukhraj Maan, a fourth-year UILS student, as its presidential candidate. Last year's presidential candidate Prince Chaudhary was also present at the announcement alongside Vatanveer Gill, state spokesperson of ASAP, and other leaders. Yet, it was the manner of the gathering that caught the eye more than the names declared. While one section of supporters rallied behind Maan, many others, including those eyeing council president ticket, were also present. The performance spilled beyond campus norms too. Outsiders were visible around the centre, and small car rallies were attempted in the aftermath- more to shoot Instagram videos than to campaign. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Europe Travel Hack That Saves You Hundreds on Trips! Learn More Undo Stickers, which Panjab University has repeatedly tried to ban from campus politics, reappeared in celebration. Though not thrown inside the centre, they were flung in the air as groups made their way while sloganeering. This season, the university has already had to issue multiple warnings. Five days ago, it formally reminded parties that defacement of walls, roads, and property will attract action. Yet the reminders have had little impact. On Tuesday, NSUI's manifesto launch at the Centre, attended by the national president of the outfit, saw hundreds of stickers hurled across the courtyard. Earlier, on July 28, SOPU's event too was marked by a similar blitz. Even vehicles have become sites of violation: police recently pulled down a SATH party sticker from a car outside campus after the university barred students from using them altogether. With the code of conduct set to kick in from Friday, officials are hoping the clampdown will finally stick. For now, the Centre has turned into a theatre where panels, factions, outsiders, and sticker wars all jostle for space, offering a preview of the poll season ahead. BOX- PU Dean Students' Welfare Professor Amit Chauhan said, "We are closely watching these activities and a committee has been constituted to check defacement. Action will be taken against those responsible." He said while notices have been issued, enforcing complete compliance remains a challenge once students step outside campus gates.
