Kota Kinabalu: Wanita MCA Sec-Gen Chan Quin Er called for greater participation of women in policymaking, including in the imminent Sabah elections. She outlined 10 key reform demands, ranging from ending child marriage to strengthening protection against gender-based violence, and urged all to support the cause. She was speaking at an event to mark its 50th anniversary, themed 'Empower Family, Enrich Education.' It was jointly organised by the FSCWA, TAR UMT Sabah branch, and Wanita MCA Sabah. It coincided with the Happy Healthy Family Day 2025, held to mark Mother's Day and the International Day of Families. It was attended by some 500 people. Chan is also promoting Wanita MCA's nationwide CEDAW petition campaign in commemoration of Malaysia's 30-year ratification of the UN Convention. She said the family is the foundation, the community is our base and women are our strength. The event featured a wide range of health and wellness services, including cancer screenings, mental health consultations, eye examinations, HPV tests, and blood donation. Federation of Sabah Chinese Women Associations, President Datuk Dr Pamela Yong, said the event highlighted the importance of collaborative volunteerism and support from multiple sectors. 'When we come together, we don't just create events but create impact to change lives,' she said. Dr Pamela also emphasised the spirit of gotong-royong masyarakat and the power of community-driven impact. State-wide vape ban will not work; it'll only proliferate illicit drug-induced products
THE Malaysian Vapers Alliance (MVA) – a non-profit advocacy group that supports vaping s to help smokers quit – has opposed ban sale of vape products by state governments while calling on state policymakers to work alongside the federal government to regulate vape products in Malaysia. This is because a ban on sale of vape products by stopping the issuance of business licence for local traders will only create negative consequences especially when the federal government has already enacted laws to regulate vape products, according to MVA's president Khairil Azizi Khairuddin. 'Consumers want access to regulated products. But this situation will only force consumers to seek products from alternative source including illegal channels which will lead to flourishing of illegal vape products and underground market,' he envisages. MVA further revealed that banned substance, notably products laced and infused with drugs are not sold in vape shops but on online platforms including social media channels and applications such as Telegram. Last year alone, the Home Minister had during a Dewan Rakyat session cited a study by Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital which found that 65% of underage vape users in Kelantan were found to be vaping a substance known as magic mushrooms although the state has stopped licence issuance for vape shops and vape trading since 2015. 'Clearly, the ban on vape shops is not the right solution,' asserted Khairil. 'Instead, the authorities should ensure that only regulated vape products are available for sale in vape shops, increase enforcement efforts against the sale of products laced and infused with drugs on those channels, and by imposing heavy penalties including mandatory jail term for those involved.' Harm reduction is the way to go In a related development, MVA also stressed that the use of vape products should not be confused with drug use as data has shown that countries embracing harm reduction like Sweden, the UK and New Zealand are seeing record drops in smoking rates. 'Research from leading health authorities confirms vaping is significantly less harmful than smoking in addition to be more effective than traditional nicotine replacement therapies,' observed Khairil. 'However, banning risks pushing people back to cigarettes. As the evidence mounts, it's impossible to ignore the transformation that harm reduction has brought to public health.' In Sweden, for example, the widespread use of less harmful nicotine products has nearly eliminated smoking while New Zealand is on the path to a smoke-free future. 'The data is clear: when adults have access to regulated vaping products, smoking rates fall faster, more lives are saved and health inequalities are reduced. Yet, too often, these success stories are left out of the any conversation,' lamented Khairil. Ten years later, tragedy sparks reforms and resilience

RANAU: The 10th anniversary of the Mount Kinabalu earthquake that claimed 18 lives in 2015 was commemorated at Kinabalu Park on Thursday, marking a day of remembrance and reflection for those affected by the tragedy. Sabah Parks Trustees Board Chairman Peter Lintar said while the pain remains, the event spurred significant reforms in mountain safety and disaster response throughout the decade. He paid tribute to the victims - climbers, mountain guides and young adventurers - and acknowledged the enduring grief of their families while commending their strength and resilience. Peter also expressed deep appreciation to mountain guides, porters, rescuers, volunteers and locals whose sacrifices inspired long-term safety improvements, including the formation of Mosar and enhanced rescue protocols. JANS, UMS to boost cooperation over campus water issue

KOTA KINABALU: The State Works Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to resolving Universiti Malaysia Sabah's (UMS) water supply problems through coordinated discussions and site visits involving the Sabah Water Department (JANS). Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, also Works Minister, said the meetings focused on identifying both short- and long-term solutions, with key issues such as water theft, incomplete pipe works, and technical challenges already identified. He added that JANS has agreed to enhance technical cooperation with UMS, including ensuring consistent water flow to the R13 tank and assisting with pump operations. Shahelmey also announced that a new indicator has been installed at the R13 tank, with a digital version to be fitted once delivered within the next week.
