N. Sembilan records increase in tourist arrivals last year
State Tourism, Culture and Arts Action Committee chairman Nicole Tan said that in conjunction with the 2026 Visit Negeri Sembilan Year (TMNS 2026), the state's promotional efforts will be expanded.
'To attract more foreign tourists to Negeri Sembilan, various strategic initiatives have been planned, including intensifying international promotions through participation in tourism exhibitions and sales missions abroad, leveraging digital platforms, and collaborating with both domestic and international travel agencies,' she said.
She said various promotional activities have been scheduled to be held in stages throughout this year through the Negeri Sembilan Tourism Board, starting with the pre-launch of TMNS 2026 in June and culminating with the official launch of TMNS 2026 in December, to be held in Port Dickson.
Meanwhile, State Heritage, Technology, Innovation and Digital Action Committee Chairman Datuk Mohd Faizal Ramli said the state was committed to moving towards the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in various sectors, in line with efforts to strengthen the state's digital transformation.
Mohd Faizal said that among the key areas where artificial intelligence (AI) could be applied are the enhancement of the digital economy, public service delivery, urban management planning, and other related sectors.
However, he said, the challenges remain, particularly in terms of inadequate technological infrastructure.
'In this regard, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is committed to expanding internet coverage through the National Digital Network (JENDELA) initiative.
'This includes the construction of new telecommunications structures, the development of fibre optic broadband for fixed-line connections, and extending 5G network coverage across populated areas,' he said.
He added that under the JENDELA project, 90 out of 105 new transmitter structures have been completed and are now operational, while 1,666 existing transmitter stations have been upgraded to 4G network technology.
Additionally, 220,444 out of 221,627 fixed-line connections have been equipped with fibre optic infrastructure, he added.
As for the development of the 5G network, Mohd Faizal said that through the collaboration between MCMC and Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), 229 out of 232 targeted sites, representing 77.6 per cent coverage, have been completed through the construction of new structures and upgrades to existing infrastructure in key areas within each district.

Strong investment, clear policies key to TVET metaverse adoption
SEPANG: Stronger investment and clear policy incentives are essential if Malaysia is to successfully integrate metaverse technology into technical and vocational education and training (TVET), a researcher said. UCSI University Associate Professor Dr Keoy Kay Hooi, who is leading a study on metaverse adoption in TVET for communications and multimedia, said while the technology is available, scaling its use across higher learning institutions requires government intervention. "There is a need for strong investment. We have the technology, but replicating and adopting it will be a challenge. "There is also a need for incentives for infrastructure as well as cybersecurity policies. "When we have the metaverse content infrastructure online, privacy and data integrity must be taken into consideration," he said while presenting his research at the 2025 Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Symposium today. With the theme 'The Future of Connectivity: Embracing Sustainability and User-Centric Approaches', the symposium provided a platform for dialogue on how research can shape a more inclusive and forward-looking digital ecosystem. Organised by the MCMC Academy and supported by the DSRG programme, the studies highlighted national priorities, including sustainable development, digital empowerment, and the importance of placing user needs at the centre of policy and infrastructure design. Dr Keoy said his research surveyed 286 institutions nationwide to measure readiness in adopting the metaverse for TVET, particularly in multimedia and communication-related programmes. The findings showed that while 83 per cent of educators had been exposed to metaverse learning, only 53 per cent believed it would enhance practical training. "The bigger challenge is to address scepticism among those unconvinced of the technology. "Despite the survey showing more than 50 per cent in favour, the challenge now is to ensure the 34 per cent who said no are converted to yes, and those who said maybe are also persuaded to yes," he said. He also noted differences between private and public institutions, as readiness levels varied depending on resources, organisational structures, and priorities. Beyond technology, institutional readiness was critical. "During the pandemic, the landscape changed completely. "We had to deal with three-year-old children using Zoom, and the energy teachers expended on 20 minutes of classes was equivalent to half a day. "It was not easy. We had TVET, and now with the metaverse, how useful would it have been if these tools had been available during Covid? "Children could have had more immersive and interactive learning, which would have been more impactful," he added.

Lack of awareness in suburbs hampers 5G, AI rollout
SEPANG: While 5G and Artificial Intelligence (AI) offer clear benefits for automation, smart manufacturing, and real-time decision-making, policy gaps and low public trust remain major barriers to adoption, says a researcher. Universiti Kuala Lumpur's Associate Professor Dr Mohd Azraie Mohd Azmi said that his study identified several challenges requiring urgent attention, including privacy and security concerns, infrastructure shortfalls, and limited public awareness. "Our respondents highlighted privacy and security as the primary concern, followed by infrastructure gaps. Many urban residents are aware of AI and 5G technologies and their advantages. However, in suburban areas, awareness is far lower as people are unclear about the benefits, how to use these technologies, or how to leverage them," he said while presenting his research at the 2025 Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Symposium today. Titled "Addressing the Challenges of 5G and AI Adoption in Developing Economies: A Pathway to Digital Empowerment", the study also raised concerns over job displacement and widening digital divides. Mohd Azraie also called for a comprehensive action plan to guide 5G and AI adoption in developing economies, addressing key security and societal challenges. The plan would focus on expanding infrastructure, public upskilling, robust data protection, and clearer policies developed through government–industry collaboration. "In terms of education, we need digital literacy and training programmes, extending coverage to rural and underserved areas. There is also a need for closer cooperation between government and industry to maximise the economic benefits of 5G," he added.

MCMC champions research to bridge Malaysia's digital divide
SEPANG: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing an inclusive, sustainable and user-centred approach to connectivity, in line with national priorities under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). In his keynote address at the 2025 MCMC Symposium, its chief human resources officer Dr Murugappan Subramanian said that connectivity should not only be fast and extensive, but also inclusive, environmentally responsible and responsive to the real needs of users. He said that this year's symposium, which drew 400 participants from government, academia and civil society, reflected on the rapidly evolving digital landscape. "The projects highlighted here are supported under the Digital Society Research Grant (DSRG) programme, which focuses on digital citizenship, cyber wellness and digital inclusion, all aimed at deepening understanding of the human and social factors influencing digital adoption and usage. "These projects are aligned with national priorities under the 13MP, particularly in strengthening digital leadership and innovation. As Malaysia assumes the Asean chairmanship in 2025, this research also supports regional efforts towards building a connected, inclusive and future-ready digital community," he said. His speech was read by MCMC Academy head of division, Malini Ramalingam. Also present was the Regional Director of the International Telecommunication Union Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, Dr Atsuko Okuda. Centred on the theme "The Future of Connectivity: Embracing Sustainability and User-Centric Approaches", the symposium provides a platform for dialogue on how research can guide the creation of a more inclusive and forward-looking digital ecosystem. Organised by the MCMC Academy with support from the DSRG programme, the event showcases research outcomes from the 2024 grant cycle. This year's studies underscored key national priorities, including sustainable development, digital empowerment and the importance of embedding user needs at the core of policy and infrastructure planning. Murugappan said that the symposium also served as a forum for researchers, industry players and policymakers to exchange ideas and reinforce Malaysia's digital development agenda. He said that the research presented further supports MCMC's broader mission of evidence-based policymaking and sector development through initiatives such as the Pelan Jalinan Digital Negara (Jendela). "This symposium marks a key milestone in the DSRG journey, with the successful completion of its first 2025 cycle, during which 11 projects were awarded. Building on this momentum, a second cycle will be launched in the latter half of the year, with an expanded research focus and a broader scope that includes requests from the communications and multimedia industry," he added.
