The word Tartuffe has since entered the English language to describe a confidence trickster — someone who masks dishonesty with false morality.
I recently had the misfortune of knowing a Tartuffe. He was exceptionally skilled in deception — too good, in fact.
At first he appeared kind, generous and understanding, exuding charm and attentiveness. He made me feel special, boosting my confidence and offering unwavering support.
I trusted him, relied on him. Before I realised it, he had become an indispensable part of my life. But beneath this crafted persona was something sinister. He was not my friend — he was a fraudster, a manipulator, a predator who thrived on control. His goal was never to help but to exploit, targeting those who were generous, kind-hearted or emotionally vulnerable.
A skilled con artist does not rush. He embeds himself into your life, studying your vulnerabilities — your insecurities, struggles or need for support. He offers solutions, making himself appear irreplaceable. At first his generosity seems boundless. He helps with errands, provides small favours and listens when needed. He never asks for anything in return for the small favours — until he does. In addition, when he finally does, it seems only fair to repay his kindness. Generously.
One of a trickster's most dangerous tactics is isolation. He subtly undermines your relationships, planting seeds of doubt — "You know you can't trust him, right? But don't worry, you have me." He convinces you that anyone who questions him is lying. He publicly performs small acts of kindness, reinforcing his carefully constructed image.
Slowly, your circle of support shrinks. You withdraw from genuine friends, believing only he has your best interests at heart. By the time you recognise what's happening, you may feel entirely dependent on him.
A tartuffe is a master of deception. He constructs false narratives to manipulate your emotions. He may claim financial hardship or personal crises, making you believe that only you can help him.
It starts small — the mention of an unexpected expense, a minor favour. But they grow. You find yourself giving more and more, feeling guilty if you hesitate. He places you in situations where saying no feels impossible. After all, he has been so helpful — how could you refuse?
What you don't realise is that you are being conditioned. Each act of generosity strengthens his grip. You justify it by reminding yourself of all he's done for you. The cycle continues, deepening his deception.
Most confidence tricksters exhibit sociopathic tendencies. They lack conscience, empathy or genuine emotional attachment. To them, people are tools — stepping stones to financial gain and control. They feel no remorse when they manipulate or ruin their victims.
Their ability to mimic genuine emotions makes them especially dangerous. They can appear sad on cue, feign affection and display concern when necessary. They claim people have lied about them, insist they have done nothing wrong and always offer a well-rehearsed smile.
Their lies come effortlessly. But it's all an act. Once they have extracted everything they can from you — or more likely when they sense you're beginning to see through them — they discard you without hesitation, moving on to their next unsuspecting victim.
For those caught in a confidence trickster's web, the realisation is devastating. Victims feel guilt, shame, anger and betrayal. Many struggle to accept that someone they trusted so completely was deceiving them all along. Escaping a fraudster requires strength and, often, outside help. If you suspect manipulation:
- Cut ties completely. Do not engage, argue, or give them the chance to manipulate you further.
- Stop providing money or assistance, no matter how persuasive their excuses.
- Reach out to those who genuinely care about you.
Most importantly, remember — you are not to blame. These con artists are experts in deception, and anyone can fall victim. The best defence is awareness: recognising the signs before they take hold and ensuring that your kindness is never exploited.

Study urges action to preserve fading heritage
ON warm desert nights, when the air is thick with the scent of frankincense and the stars burn bright above the palm groves, Omani folktales come alive. They travel on the lips of elders, in the pauses between sips of kahwa, in the gentle rise and fall of voices telling of cunning foxes, enchanted trees, and lions turned to stone. These tales are not just entertainment — they are the memory of a people, stitched into words, passed from one generation's heart to the next. Yet today, those voices are growing faint. The steady hum of digital screens threatens to replace the crackle of fireside storytelling. Children are more likely to meet Cinderella than the Lion of Izki, to wander Little Red Riding Hood's forest before setting foot in the deserts or wadis of their own imagination. Fearing that this rich heritage might slip away, my colleagues, Fatema al Rubaiey and Gerard Dineen, and I — a research team at SQU embarked on a research journey to trace the fate of Omani folktales. With the generous support of SQU, we set out to answer a question that has grown more urgent with each passing year: are our stories still being told in their true voice, or are they slowly being reshaped, diluted, and forgotten in the rush of modern life? Using Hasan El Shamy's tale-type index, we examined dozens of Omani folktales published in English, tracing their origins, themes, and cultural markers. Many remained firmly rooted in the Omani landscape — stories of sacred places, tribal rivalries, and supernatural interventions that could only have been born here. 'The Lion of Izki' tells of a predator turned to stone through the power of faith. 'The Cunning Fox' reimagines the universal trickster with the sly resourcefulness of desert life. These narratives carry the scent of palm groves, the sound of falaj water, and the resilience of those who live between mountains and sea. But we also found tales altered beyond recognition or lifted from far-off lands: An Omani Cinderella and the escapades of Abu Nawas transplanted into unfamiliar villages. Even Little Red Riding Hood, far from her European forest, now roams Omani classrooms. Cultural exchange can enrich, but it becomes harmful when borrowed narratives crowd out our own. More troubling still, Omani folktales have no place on Unesco's list of intangible cultural heritage. Without official recognition or a systematic approach to collecting and classifying them, they remain unprotected. This absence leaves space for foreign tales to dominate, while authentic Omani stories fade from memory. Our research calls for a dedicated Omani tale-type classification system — one that complements regional Arab indexes but preserves the details that make our stories uniquely ours: the falaj, the desert winds, the sacred coastal landmarks, and the wisdom woven into local proverbs. Preserving these folktales is not about nostalgia. It is about safeguarding the cultural DNA that tells us who we are. If we do nothing, an entire generation could grow up knowing more about the adventures of Western princesses than the heritage of their own ancestors. This is a call to educators, cultural institutions, and policymakers: gather these stories, teach them, and celebrate them. Let them live not as fragile memories, but as living voices shaping our future. The digital age gives us the tools to record and share them more widely than ever before. Is Omani Cuisine Ready to Make Its Mark on International Menus?
In the elegant ambience of Rawya, a venue renowned for its meticulous design and inviting atmosphere, renowned Omani chef Issa Al Lamki exudes confidence as he prepares to welcome his guests. Dressed in a traditional mussar, he has just finished circulating among his team and the representatives from Mandarin Oriental Muscat, as they jointly hosted an evening called 'Seblat.' Traditionally, Seblat (or sablah) — a term rooted in Oman's cultural lexicon—is a gathering of men within the majlis, a space where community members discuss everything from politics and social issues to family matters. It is an intimate forum that has historically played a vital role in nurturing community bonds. Typically a private, men-only affair, this event was reimagined in a more contemporary, luxurious setting to shine a spotlight on Omani culture and cuisine. For many years, Omani food has largely remained confined to family gatherings, festivals, and local celebrations. It is often viewed as traditional, hearty, and deeply rooted in Oman's history but has struggled to establish a presence on the international dining stage. Its limited exposure outside Oman has been due to a combination of factors: a general lack of awareness about the cuisine's rich flavours, difficulty sourcing authentic ingredients like frankincense and specific regional spices, and the perception that it is too niche for upmarket, global restaurants. As a result, most high-end hotels and restaurants outside Oman tend to focus on more popular international cuisines such as French, Italian, or fusion styles, leaving traditional Omani dishes on the sidelines. However, there is a growing movement to change this narrative. Chefs like Issa Al Lamki are at the forefront of this effort, working towards elevating Omani cuisine and presenting it in a manner suitable for refined, international audiences. 'Our food tells a story of Oman—its history, trade, and culture,' explains Issa. 'I want to bring that story into luxurious setting, where it can be appreciated on a new level.' He vividly describes a few of the key dishes that represent Oman's culinary identity. One is Shuwa, a signature dish for special occasions like Eid. It involves marinating lamb or goat with spices and then wrapping it in banana or palm fronds before slow-cooking it underground for up to 48 hours. The result is tender, aromatic meat infused with a smoky sweetness and spices, a tradition influenced by Arab and African cooking techniques. Another popular dish is Majboos—a rice dish prepared with saffron, dried lemon, and a variety of locally sourced meats such as chicken or fish. What sets Majboos apart is its fragrant, spicy rice cooked with a blend of spices that reflect Oman's historical trade connectivity—Indian, Persian, and even Portuguese influences are evident in its seasoning and presentation. From harees to halwa, from salona to mishkak, Chef Issa believes that dishes are not only taste experiences but also cultural stories. They reflect Oman's position at the crossroads of historic trade routes connecting Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, which infused its cuisine with diverse flavours. The use of frankincense and myrrh, native to Oman, adds an aroma and depth that is unique to the region. Despite these rich traditions, Omani cuisine's reputation remains somewhat limited internationally. Many outside Oman perceive it as rustic or only suitable for traditional celebrations. Its presence on international menus is sparse, often limited to cultural festivals or special themed events. Chef Issa's mission is to bridge this gap. He believes that authentic Omani flavours, skillfully prepared and elegantly presented, can appeal to global audiences. During the event, he shared how sourcing ingredients like frankincense, specific spices from India and Iran, and fresh seafood from Oman is crucial. 'Authenticity is key,' he emphasises. 'We source our ingredients carefully, and I insist on using local spices and herbs when possible, to keep the flavours true.' To appeal to international guests, Chef Issa also experiments with fusion dishes—modern adaptations of traditional recipes that respect core flavours but feature contemporary presentation. He envisions a future where Omani cuisine is no longer considered niche but part of the global fine dining scene. 'This event is just the start,' he says. 'I hope we can introduce more Omani dishes into international menus, showing the world the full diversity and richness of our food. My hope is that one day, Omani dishes will be on the menu, prepared with the same care as other fine cuisines.' As the evening drew to a close, Chef Issa expressed his optimism. 'This is just the start,' he repeats. ' Our cuisine has so much to offer, and I believe that with continued effort, the world will embrace Oman's food as it deserves.' Looking ahead, he hopes that more high-end establishments will incorporate authentic Omani dishes into their menus, not just for special occasions but as regular offerings that represent Oman's rich heritage.

'Usually when you see even celebrity proposals, it's around 2 to 3 carats or maybe 5 carats,' Walsh said. 'This ring is in a league of its own. It's taking a good third of her finger, size-wise.' But it did remind her of a few other rings worn by celebrities and socialites. Walsh estimated the cost of Rodríguez's ring to be at least $5 million, and the total weight to be around 35 carats. She said it looked similar to Mariah Carey's 35-carat emerald-cut engagement ring in 2016 from her billionaire ex-fiance, James Packer. The ring also reminded Walsh of Elizabeth Taylor's 33-carat stone, gifted by her ex Richard Burton in 1968. It sold for $8.8 million at a Christie's auction in 2011. From Georgina Rodriguez Insta Ronaldo, the most followed person on Instagram, with more than 660 million followers, and a man with a level of international fame that cannot really be overstated, is bound to inspire trends with his engagement ring. 'This is one of the biggest celebrity engagements we've seen in a while,' Walsh said. 'So many people are really huge fans of him. A lot of men as well. I can guess there's going to be an uptick in oval diamonds for sure, but will people want larger diamonds now?' Oval diamonds are popular for their romantic, soft look. 'Even though this is a huge diamond, it has that sort of contour where it's quite delicate,' Walsh said. After the round brilliant ring, the oval diamond is the second most popular choice at 77 Diamonds, generating about 20% of total sales. 'Because it's an elongated diamond, it helps also make your hand seem a bit more slender, a bit finer than a more geometric or rectangular-looking stone,' Walsh added. Rodríguez's engagement ring also appears to be flanked by two smaller oval diamond side stones, which is called a trilogy design. The three diamonds typically signify the past, present and future. Olivia Landau, founder of the Clear Cut, a jeweler in New York, said the side stones appeared to be around 3 carats each. She predicted that the three-stone ring, with three ovals, would be more popular now, though on a smaller scale. Landau also said that, given Rodríguez's track record with fine and high jewelry, she believed it was a natural diamond. 'She's known for being a maximalist with her jewelry,' Landau said. Ann Grimmett, vice president for merchandising at Jared Jewelers, estimated that the diamond was 30 to 40 carats, costing anywhere from $5 million to $15 million. And George Khalife, a celebrity jeweler known as George the Jeweler, estimated that it was around 20 to 25 carats, and around at least $5 million to $7 million. 'Knowing that it's Cristiano Ronaldo, I'm assuming it's probably near colorless (F color), likely a VVS quality,' Khalife said, noting that the diamond appeared to be nearly flawless.
