Gout Gout's agent left him almost speechless with financial admission

Daily Mirror10 hours ago

Gout Gout didn't realise the impact of his sprinting career until his agent told him about a lucrative endorsement deal that Adidas came a-knocking with, which has changed his life forever
Gout Gout couldn't quite believe it when his agent revealed that Adidas had came calling with an endorsement deal worth millions. The 17-year-old sprinter has made waves over the past couple of years in the world of athletics, shattering the Australian men's U18 200m record at his nation's Junior Athletics Championships two years ago with a time of 20.87 seconds.
Meanwhile, in December 2024, the youngster secured the second-fastest U18 time in the same discipline at the Australian All Schools Championships, crossing the line in 20.04s. Not only did this time surpass the one that eight-time Olympic gold-medalist Usain Bolt achieved during his own younger years, but it also broke the Australian and Oceanian record set by Peter Norman in 1968.

But it seems as though Gout Gout didn't quite understand the impact he had until interest from big-name brands arrived. A few weeks after his record-breaking feat, the youngster was told about a long-term deal with Adidas that is thought to be worth millions in the coming years.

And speaking to GQ, Gout Gout explained that he was left almost speechless when his agent, James Templeton, told him how much he was set to receive as a result. He explained: "JT told me how much they were willing to pay to get me on their side.
"It was crazy. The number kept getting higher and I realised how much these companies think I'm worth. But that sponsorship really helps you get to the next level because obviously you need the money to travel and to train.
"Especially since I'm at school, so I don't need to go and find a job at Maccas or whatever to put fuel in my car. It definitely helps a lot."
Elsewhere in his interview, the young sprinter showed his true colours by humbly revealing his biggest purchase since finding fame and fortune, while also sharing his long-term plans to help look after his family.
He added: "I've saved a lot and I bought myself a new car when I got my Ps, so that's probably the biggest purchase I've made so far. I haven't gone crazy."

A child of seven to his parents Bona and Monica, who fled South Sudan to resettle in Australia two years before he was born, Gout Gout added: "Long term, I'd like to set myself up and set my family up."
While the sprinting prodigy may be a little while away from making waves at the Olympic Games, he has already left a sizeable mark in short-distance running. He achieved a silver medal at the 2024 World Championships in Lima in the 200m, while he settled for a fifth-place finish in the 4x100m relay of the same tournament.
And as a result, Gout Gout has seen himself compared to Jamaican legend Bolt time and time again. However, keen to make a name for himself, the prodigy has admitted that the comparisons can get a little tiring.
He told Nine last year: "My stride length is pretty long, my knee height is pretty high and just the amount of tallness I get when I'm running. I'm just me trying to be me.
"Obviously, I do run like him. I do sometimes look like him, but obviously, I'm making a name for myself, and I think I've done that pretty well. I just want to continue doing that and continue to be not only Usain Bolt but continue to be Gout Gout."

I worked late shifts at a Land Rover factory but hated it so much it inspired my Olympic dream, says Galal Yafai

The pint-sized flyweight had to watch older brothers Kal and Gamal win titles in the professional ranks while he worked overnight for Land Rover. Yafai, 32, told SunSport: "It was a Land Rover factory in Solihull, they've got a big factory there that build the Land Rovers Discoveries and Defenders. "So I was working there, delivering the parts and whatnot for like three years in the factory. So it's full time it's proper work, it weren't part time. "So I kind of had to juggle boxing and work at the same time for three/four years and I actually got to a point where I was going to quit boxing. I'm going out and getting paid. I got my apartment with my brother and I was just enjoying life. "But just the stress of work too, it was getting hard to juggle boxing so luckily I got onto the Great Britain team, just before I decided to leave." Yafai would train from 5pm, clock in for work at 8pm and finish sometimes at 7am - before doing it all again. He hated it so much that the boxer was inspired to go to the Olympics - just so he could finally hand in his P45 after sleeping on the job. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS Yafai said: "It was just a nightmare. I'd have to train and go straight to work and do an eight-nine hour shift. I used to dread going into work. "I remember I used to see my brothers boxing, as pros and think, 'Oh, they're so lucky to get to just box for a living. I have to go to work and I have to train as well.' "I remember I'd fall asleep on my little buggy, I used to drive a buggy around and I used to fall asleep on there sometimes and some of the gaffers would go mad at me. "But yeah, I just thought, 'You know what, I need to stick at this because I could do something.' And thank God it worked out." Yafai packed up his job and became a full-time amateur boxer for Team GB - earning a spot on the 2020 Tokyo team. And after winning gold, Yafai turned pro a year later with Eddie Hearn and the hopes of replicating older brother Kal - the ex-WBA world champion. And Yafai made a super-quick start in the paid ranks - boxing in a ten-rounder for the WBC International title in his very first bout. He said: "Me and my coach thought I was good enough to start off in ten rounders. I used to drive a buggy around and I used to fall asleep on there sometimes and some of the gaffers would go mad at me. Galal Yafai "And Eddie said, 'Well, why not go for an international title?' We were like, 'Brilliant.' "But I want to get to a world title, so any minor title in between is, yeah, not too bad, I won't put it up on my mantelpiece, but it's nice to have. "It just so happened to be WBC International and hopefully I'll be fighting for the WBC full title soon." Yafai returns on Saturday in his home of Birmingham against Francisco Rodriguez Jr, Mexico's former WBO champ. Awaiting the winner is a shot at unified WBA and WBC champion Kenshiro Teraji. Yafai said: "I'd expect it, but you never know in boxing. Rodriguez is a top five competitor. "He's a former champion, he fought the best of the best, so it's not an easy fight. People don't really know him too well but I can't look past him. "He's a really good fighter and that's the thing nowadays, if people don't know who you're fighting, they don't think they're that good, which is the biggest mistake someone can make because he's a really good fighter but he's just not hugely well known here. "I'm not looking past him. He's a great fighter and hopefully I can get rid of him Saturday."

AJ to make boxing return this year as two-fight Tyson Fury plan emerges

EXCLUSIVE: Anthony Joshua is recovering from elbow surgery but his team are plotting his ring return for late in 2025 after preferred opponent was ruled out due to being picked for Saudi fight Anthony Joshua is plotting a return late this year - with old rival Deontay Wilder on a shortlist of potential opponents. The British heavyweight star has not fought since he was knocked out by Daniel Dubois in an IBF title clash last September. ‌ But now 'AJ' - who is recovering from elbow surgery - is plotting his path to a Tyson Fury double-header next year and American Wilder is one option promoter Eddie Hearn is looking at. ‌ Wilder, 39, is returning to the ring next week against Tyrrell Herndon as he looks to shake off back-to-back defeats by Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang amid retirement calls. Hearn said: 'I don't see why not. I mean, we'd take that fight in October, November, December. It's still dangerous. Like someone said to me, oh, you think he'll be in a dangerous fight? I said, they're all f***ing dangerous, mate. "We want to fight Fury. And the plan for us is to fight October, November or December, and then fight Tyson twice. Or certainly once. And I can't see that fight not happening. As long as AJ comes through at the end of the year.' Joshua and Wilder were in talks around 2018 for what would have been an undisputed heavyweight title clash between two unbeaten fights but discussions broke down. American Jared Anderson, German Agit Kabayel and Efe Ajagba are other names Hearn is considering for Joshua's return. Former foe Dillian Whyte was in contention until he was matched with highly-rated star Moses Itauma for an August showdown in Saudi Arabia. Joshua is now 35 and has four defeats on his record after earlier career losses to Andy Ruiz Jnr and Oleksandr Usyk twice. Hearn believes 2026 will be the London 2012 Olympic champion's final year in the sport but won't rule out retirement earlier if he doesn't shine in his return bout later in 2025. ‌ The Matchroom chief added: 'The proof will be this fight. Like I said the other day, 2026 will probably be his last year in the sport. 'But this next fight will tell us everything. You know what I mean? If camp doesn't go well, if the performance isn't of the same level, you have to evaluate after each fight. The moment you don't look good in camp or don't start sparring well that's when you have to think about your position. But that's not happened yet.' Chris Eubank Jr will face Conor Benn in a rematch either on September 20 or October 4 after the September 27 date was ruled out due to the Premier League fixtures. Tottenham are at home to Wolves on the original date.

'I don't disregard brands, of course, I like certain things. But now it's more like how it fits, how everything fits together. Now I have more understated pieces.' Madueke also went onto admit that his outlook on fashion can often change and revealed he makes extra effort to ensure he is always up with the times. 'I'd probably say in the next three months, we'll have a new U-turn,' he added. 'I can wake up one day and just be like: "All right [clicks his fingers]", the next six months, I want to look like this.' The winger also opened up on which team-mate had the best fashion sense, while he also provided further insight on how trendy Blues star Cole Palmer is. 'Jadon [Sancho] has some pieces stuffed in his wardrobe that if he brought them out, you'd be like, "Oh my God, Why don't you wear this stuff, man?", Madueke said. 'Jadon will have all the best pieces, 100 per cent. 'He's (Palmer) got a little bit… Cole's got a little bit of something going on.'
