Arch Manning gives his take on Quinn Ewers play in the NFL so far

After a rough start to his first NFL preseason game, former Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers threw two touchdowns for the Miami Dolphins in his second preseason game, leading Miami to a 24-17 win over the Detroit Lions. Arch Manning thinks Ewers is doing pretty well.
Ewers led an epic late 17-play drive with just under two minutes left in the fourth quarter to seal with win. His former backup QB likes what he sees. "Yeah he balled didn't he? He's a baller, bro. He's accurate. He makes plays. So I'm excited for him.'
A lot has been made about Manning backing up Ewers for two years. Even Steve Spurrier offered up his opinion on whether playing Ewers cost Texas a national title or Manning more development. "My question is, if he was this good how come they let Quinn Ewers play all the time last year?" Spurrier asked. "He was a 7th round pick?'
Through it all, Manning and Ewers stayed good friends and they keep in contact as much as time permits. "I learned so much from Quinn in my two years behind him," Manning said at SEC Media Days. "I think he handled it like a pro. It's definitely not easy having me as the backup with all the media. I'm forever grateful for him.I actually texted him the other week for advice on two-minute, what kind of plays he likes to start with."
Miami and Ewers face the Jacksonville Jags on Saturday for Preseason game No. 3. Manning will kick off the season on Aug. 30 in Columbus, Ohio.

Jets bolster defensive line with trade for Browns' Jowon Briggs

FILE - Jowon Briggs answers a question during a Cleveland Browns NFL football rookie minicamp, on May 10, 2024, in Berea, Ohio. Sue Ogrocki/AP FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets acquired defensive tackle Jowon Briggs from the Cleveland Browns in a trade Wednesday that also included draft picks. The Browns also sent a seventh-round pick in next year's NFL draft to New York for a sixth-rounder next year. Briggs had 13 tackles with two quarterback hits in six games for Cleveland last season after being a seventh-round selection. The 6-foot-1, 313-pound D-lineman had 12 career sacks and 170 tackles during a college career that began at Virginia (2019-20) and finished with three years at Cincinnati (2021-23). Defensive tackle Byron Cowart has missed time in training camp with an ankle injury, so the addition of Briggs could help fill that void for the Jets if Cowart is sidelined for an extended time. ___

Former Eagles coach stakes his future on a rival's failed former first-round pick

Shane Steichen needs to win now in Indianapolis, and he's staked his future on Daniel Jones having success as the Colts' starting quarterback Who's interested in some Shane Steichen news? There's no hard feelings towards those of you who aren't. It's completely understandable. His stint with the Philadelphia Eagles feels like it was ten years ago, but it wasn't. Shortly after the final seconds trickled away in Super Bowl 57, his and Jonathan Gannon's time in the City of Brotherly Love was over. Both accepted jobs as head coaches for other franchises. Gannon didn't have to leave Glendale, as he took over for the Arizona Cardinals. Steichen, like Frank Reich before him, accepted the Indianapolis Colts' job after an Eagles Super Bowl appearance. Fast forward to the present, and both are sitting in seats that are much hotter than they were upon the arrival of both men. To succeed in the NFL, every head coach must find his franchise quarterback. Gannon has hitched his wagon to Kyler Murray, and while that isn't great, he's in much better shape than Steichen. You won't believe who the latter is rolling with. A former Eagles head coach ties his coaching future to a failed Giants quarterback. Things didn't work out very well for Daniel Jones with the New York Giants. Jones was the sixth player taken in the 2019 NFL Draft, and while that seems like a reach now, there weren't many better options. The alternatives were Drew Lock, Will Grier, Ryan Finley, and Jarrett Stidham. Then again, Gardner Mishew was in that draft, but he wasn't taken until Round 6. Philadelphia passed on him to take Clayton Thorson 11 spots earlier. You can't make this stuff up. Anyway, let's get back to the Steichen and Jones arrangement. The former is probably in a prove-it, win-or-go-home situation. The latter ended a six-year run in the Big Apple with a record well below .500. Sixty-nine starts produced a 24-44-1 win-loss total. By naming Jones as his starter for the coming season, it can also be argued that the Colts seem content to close the door on the Anthony Richardson era. Time will tell. Anything can happen, but all of that has been said to say the following. As well-run as the Eagles are, they look even better each time you look at how teams like the Colts, Cardinals, and Giants are being managed.

NFL analyst sees 'a massive gap' between Rams led by Matthew Stafford vs. Jimmy Garoppolo

The Los Angeles Rams will need to decide sooner rather than later who their starting quarterback will be in Week 1. If he's fully healthy, Matthew Stafford will be under center. But he's been dealing with a back injury this summer and, despite returning to practice, is a huge question mark heading into the season. The other option is backup Jimmy Garoppolo, who has ample NFL experience but has devolved into more of a journey player who can start in a pinch. Both could still lead the Rams to the playoffs, according to ESPN's Dan Orlovsky, but the difference between Stafford and Garoppolo under center could be the deciding factor of whether L.A. is a contending team in the NFC. He told NFL analyst Warren Sharp recently that there is "a massive gap" between the Rams' offense with Stafford versus with Garoppolo calling the shots. "This is a team that with Stafford can win the Super Bowl," Orlovsky said. "With Jimmy Garoppolo, I think he can keep them afloat — a playoff-contending football team — but by no means are we talking about a team that legitimately threatens and challenges Philadelphia for the NFC Championship." This sentiment is why the Rams pushed to keep Stafford in 2025 despite his age and cost. He is simply the best quarterback for this team, as evidenced by how well the team plays with him under center versus any other player. Garoppolo, again, has good enough experience and skills to maintain continuity on offense. But his ability stunts the Rams' potential in 2025. It looks as though Stafford will be ready to roll for Week 1. But if his back injury flares up, L.A. may need to call upon their backup to start at some point in 2025.
