Lindsey Vonn lands first podium since 2018 to complete ‘impossible' comeback at 40
Lindsey Vonn concluded her comeback season at age 40 with a second-place finish in a World Cup super-G race that was won by Swiss standout Lara Gut-Behrami.
Vonn found her vintage form while flying down the twisting and steep Challenger course at the World Cup finals. The American pumped her ski poles after glancing at the scoreboard as the large crowd roared.
This was Vonn's first World Cup podium spot since 15 March 2018, when she finished third in a super-G in Are, Sweden. Vonn came out of retirement this season after a partial knee replacement.
"As much as I love skiing, it's been a hard road," Vonn said after the race. "I just continue to prove that anything is possible. I've been knocked down so many times in my life personally, physically, mentally, beat down and I always pick myself back up. It's not always easy.
"It's actually really (expletive) hard work. But that's what it takes, putting one foot in front of the other and getting through the hard days. When you keep putting one foot in front of the other, it leads you to a place like today.'
Vonn becomes the oldest female Alpine ski racer to step on the podium of a World Cup race — by six years. It was Vonn's 138th career World Cup podium in her 408th World Cup start. She is within one of tying the most starts by a female racer, a mark held by Renate Goetschl of Austria.
Not that 34-year-old Italian racer Federica Brignone is all that surprised. "She's Lindsey Vonn," Brignone said. "She's not somebody coming back from another injury. She has qualities and she's an amazing champion. Today, she put all the pieces (together) and did an amazing race."
Gut-Behrami finished in a time of 1 minute, 12.35 seconds — edging Vonn by 1.29 seconds — to earn the season-long super-G crystal globe by overtaking Brignone. Gut-Behrami trailed by five points heading into Sunday's race.
Gut-Behrami found plenty of speed and took some calculated risks to glide through the course. Brignone finished third, 1.33 seconds behind Gut-Behrami. The final season-long super-G standings ended up Gut-Behrami, Brignone and Sofia Goggia of Italy.
"Two days ago, I finally found the happiness again on skis," Gut-Behrami said. "It's easier to ski fast when you're enjoying what you're doing. I've been looking for that the entire season."
On Saturday, Brignone officially clinched the downhill discipline after the race was canceled, along with the the overall title. The next race at World Cup finals is Tuesday with a women's giant slalom.

Gareth Bale part of group seeking Plymouth takeover
The Telegraph were first to report that the 35-year-old former Real Madrid and Wales forward was part of the group seeking to buy Argyle. The PA news agency understands the group featuring Bale has registered an interest in buying Argyle, but the process is at a very early stage. Should the deal go through, Bale would be the latest big sporting name to be associated with an EFL club. Bale's former Real team-mate Luka Modric became an investor and co-owner in Championship side Swansea in April, while ex-NFL quarterback Tom Brady has a minority stake in Birmingham. Plymouth declined to comment. Bale retired from football in January 2023 at the age of 33. He won five Champions League titles with Real and is the men's all-time record goalscorer for Wales with 41 in 111 caps. Bale featured for Wales at the 2022 World Cup – their first appearance at the global finals since 1958 – and at the Euros in 2016 and 2020.

Rangers in transfer breakthrough as £7m ace 'reaches agreement' - and why another could soon follow

Rangers head coach Russell Martin is closing in on his first signing at Ibrox after reports claimed the club had reached a 'verbal agreement' with AFC Bournemouth defender Max Aarons - and another transfer could follow soon after. According to Italian transfer guru Matteo Moretto, the Gers have struck up an deal with the 25-year-old right-back on a deal that will see him move to the blue side of Glasgow on a season-long deal, with Rangers said to have 'nearly finalised' a transfer for the defender. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Part of the England side that won the European Under-21 Championship two years ago, Aarons has been capped various times by the Three Lions youth side, and has twice won the EFL Championship title with Norwich City. During his first title success with the Canaries in 2019, he was also named the EFL's Young Player of the Year. Max Aarons is said to be closing in on a move to Rangers. | Getty Images Eventually departing Carrow Road in August 2023, he completed a £7million move to the English Premier League, signing a long-term deal at Bournemouth following his hugely successful four-year spell in East Anglia. However, he has struggled to make the same level of impact at the Vitality Stadium, playing just three league games for Spanish boss Andoni Iraola last season. After being starved of regular first team football, he was allowed to depart the club in order to sign for La Liga giants Valencia on a loan with a view to a permanent deal. However, that move also failed to work out for Aarons, and he left the Mestalla Stadium having played just four games for the club. The Spanish side opted against the option to sign him on a full-time basis, which has allowed Rangers to swoop. And the English full-back could soon by joined by out-of-contract Peterborough United ace Kwame Poku, after it was claimed Rangers 'believed they had won the race' to sign the in-demand winger. Poku, 23, has been linked to newly promoted English Premier League side Sunderland, Birmingham City and several clubs on the continent. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Currently a free agent after his deal at Weston Homes Stadium came to an end, a report from the Peterborough Telegraph claims the Light Blues believe they are in pole position for his signature, despite late interest from Ipswich Town and the Turkish Super Lig. While the player is out-of-contract, the Posh will still be due a compensation fee after Poku signed for the club from Cambridge United before the age of 21. However, Rangers would likely pay significantly less than English clubs due to cross border rules - similar to the deal that brought Joe Aribo to Ibrox from Charlton Athletic in 2019 - meaning the deal is an attractive one for the club.

JJ Spaun's 'awkward' moment with wife after US Open win as fans say same thing
JJ Spaun won the U.S. Open at Oakmont on Sunday to capture his first career major, but eagle-eyed fans noticed an 'awkward' moment between the golfer and his wife Eagle-eyed fans spotted an "awkward" moment between JJ Spaun and his wife, Melody, just after the American golfer clinched the US Open title. On Sunday, Spaun triumphed over torrential rain and tough conditions at Oakmont to win his first major championship. Only three months earlier, he had faced a heartbreaking defeat to Rory McIlory at The Players' Championship, which he used as fuel for his US Open success. After his exhilarating win, Spaun was quick to celebrate with his two daughters and wife. However, several golf enthusiasts noticed that the 34-year-old seemed to snub his spouse during the initial celebrations. "Search 'JJ Spaun wife.' Glad it's not just our living room who all think he and his wife must not be getting along. Man that was awkward," one social media user commented, while another observed: "Oh there's some drama between Spaun and his wife. They didn't even acknowledge each other," reports the Mirror US. Another wrote: "JJ Spaun at no point even acknowledged his wife after winning." Despite this, Spaun did share a kiss with his wife following his victory, but viewers picked up on the apparent coolness between them. Spaun's victory was particularly remarkable given that he bogeyed five of the first six holes in the final round. The Los Angeles-born golfer then rallied, sinking birdies on four of the last nine holes, including an astonishing 64-foot birdie putt on the 18th to clinch the win at 1-under. "I never thought I would be here holding this trophy," Spaun expressed afterwards, overwhelmed with emotion. "I mean, I've always had aspirations and dreams. "But a few months ago, I never knew what my ceiling was. I never knew how good I could be, but I'm just proud that I've been resilient in my career and pushed through a lot of things and just trying to be the best golfer I can be. And, you know, I'm happy to display that today at Oakmont. "I don't think I did keep my composure, honestly, with all the breaks I was getting," he confessed. I was trying to just dig deep, hit some good shots coming in. But honestly, the weather delay we had kind of just changed the whole vibe for the day. [A] similar thing happened to me at The Players. "So this time I kind of leaned on that whole experience where I came back after the delay at The Players and I just kept pushing. "I'm super fortunate to just have a good support system around me and encourage me and support me in ways that a lot of people don't notice," he gratefully added. "So I'm just proud of how I battled, and I'm super proud to be the U.S. Open champion."
