Following the rollout of the metro's Integrated Urban Management (IUM) Programme, the past week has seen efforts in Region 3 being made to try to improve services for students.
In the previous week, Region 3 implemented the IUM programme in Ward 60, which includes parts of Pretoria West, around the Tshwane Leadership and Management Academy (TLMA), and the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).
MMC for Roads and Transport Tlangi Mogale said the work also encompasses residential areas around Danville and Phillip Nel Park.
'Ward 60 connects to E'Skia Mphahlele Drive and is a major academic node, with a student-centric nature. The teams also continued with daily maintenance activities at Rebecca Cemetery and Crematorium, and Danville swimming pool, ensuring that all main roads and public infrastructure are all attended to as part of the IUM programme,' Mogale said.
Some of the key highlights from the operations in the previous week included tackling the Staatsartillerie Corridor, which has high traffic volumes, both pedestrian and vehicle. It also connects TUT, TLMA and residential areas in the inner city, Marabastad and several smaller shopping complexes.
The operation also covered Phillip Nel Park, Danville, and Elandspoort, where there is a concentration of trees along cable lines, schools, open spaces and public parks.
During the week-long operation, a summary of the work done includes:
– Grass cut on sidewalks and open spaces
– 12 trees pruned
– 83 square meters of potholes patched
– 137m of road markings made
– 10 catchpits cleaned
– 15 traffic signs repaired
– 151 streetlights powered up
– 10 water leaks and two sewage blockages were repaired.
The week prior, the Region 3 team was in Ward 55, attending to grass cutting, tree felling, pothole fixing and unblocking a catchpit.
Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya, alongside Mogale and other members of the Mayoral Committee, launched the IUM on August 1 with a by-law and service delivery operation targeting the Kirkney and Marabastad business districts, as well as the Coca Cola and Pretoria West Business Parks.
The IUM programme aims to bring similar services to all business districts across all seven regions of the metro.

Rendani Munyai reminds TUT women of their value

Rendani Munyai reminds TUT women of their value The Economic Freedom Fighters Students Command at Tshwane University of Technology in eMalahleni hosted a women's empowerment event in commemoration of Women's Day. The event, held on August 8, featured Commissar Rendani Munyai, a central command team member, who reminded the young women of the value they carry. 'I am a woman, not because I am a woman, but because all of us are a product of a woman,' she said. Rendani also cited a quote by an African revolutionary that states that a woman should continue to play the role of a mother and a guide, remembering all that they are capable of. SEE THE PHOTOS HERE: She emphasised the need for every woman to remember that she lives in the world and for the world. 'At a moment of death, each man calls out the name of a woman, either his mother, sister, or companion, with his last breath,' Rendani said. The commissar went on to encourage the students to continue chasing their dreams and not fear occupying male-dominated spaces. 'Female leaders, it is possible,' she concluded. Calls grow for better waste solutions in Ward 98 communities

Leaders in Ward 98 have shared that much more needs to be done to address the root causes of littering. This, as illegal dumping and the lack of accessible landfill sites remain obstacles towards a cleaner and healthier community. While recent initiatives such as the rollout of new household bins have brought relief to residents, the local leaders are calling for reform in the waste sector to ensure a cleaner society. Ward 98 committee member for the Environment and Agriculture portfolio, Thabo Moroane, said the recent bin delivery campaign was based on the understanding that many bins are either damaged beyond repair or stolen. 'The decision to roll out was based on the premise that bins get damaged or stolen. But household bins alone cannot solve littering across our ward. We need concrete bins on every corner of our streets,' he said. 'The issue of illegal dumping remains an elephant in the room and, importantly, the scarcity of landfills. We need sustainable solutions that give residents legal, convenient ways to dispose of their waste,' he explained. While many residents have welcomed the new bins, Moroane stressed that a clean ward is a shared responsibility. 'It will have an impact in the long run because not only do we bring services to the doorstep, but we also deliver a message about the fundamentals of no littering. 'We also drive home the importance of taking ownership of our ward, in particular to our youth and children,' he said. For Moroane, the problem is not just about waste management infrastructure, but also education. He said that through community clean-up initiatives and outreach programmes at schools and churches, residents can educate their children, especially those at primary school, about the importance of a clean environment. Residents said the challenges are visible in everyday life. Ellen Masemola of Hesteapark said illegal dumping has become worse over the past few years. Masemola added that they've seen people dumping in open spaces, and that's frustrating, because they try to keep the area clean, but all it takes is one person to ruin it for everyone. 'If the municipality could give us more accessible dumping sites or bins, people might stop doing it.' Moroane has also raised concern about the difference in cleanliness across the ward. 'I have benchmarked Sinoville and Pretoria East in terms of their environmental cleanliness and their obsession with fighting illegal dumping. 'Within Ward 98, there are community areas that are clean and well-maintained, while large parts continue to degrade. It can't be correct. 'The cleanliness you see when you enter Ninapark must be the same when you enter Eldorette or Hesteapark,' he said. Do you have more information about the story?
