F1 Canadian GP LIVE: Qualifying updates and start time as Lewis Hamilton eyes shock pole

Independent19 hours ago

F1 next heads to a fan-favourite venue in Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix and round 10 of the 2025 season.
Oscar Piastri extended his championship lead with victory in Barcelona last time out, finishing ahead of McLaren teammate Lando Norris. The gap at the top of the standings is 10 points.
Yet the Spanish GP ended in controversy with Max Verstappen 's clash with George Russell and his subsequent 10-second time penalty. The Dutchman is now just one penalty point away from a race ban, and will have to keep it clean for the next two races.
Lewis Hamilton will be eyeing a major improvement after a difficult race in Spain, though his teammate Charles Leclerc did finish on the podium for the second consecutive race.

PREVIEW: Max Verstappen is on his final warning in Canada – but it won't change a thing
As F1 makes its second trip across the Atlantic in the space of five weeks, Max Verstappen is the centre of attention once again. Before Miami in May, it was due to heartwarming reasons, as he became a father for the first time a few days earlier. Yet this weekend, ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, the Red Bull driver knows he is on his final warning on-track.
The three penalty points accumulated at the last meet in Spain – punishment for a deliberate ram into George Russell – means the enigmatic Dutchman is just one point away from a race suspension. A suspension which, surely, would put his faint 2025 title hopes in the dust.
As such, Verstappen must keep his nose clean this weekend, and in Austria in a fortnight's time, before two of his 11 points are wiped from his licence. Twelve across a year trigger a ban; it is a fair system, designed to curtail erratic, dangerous manoeuvres such as the one seen in Barcelona.

Williams boss James Vowles on goals for the weekend:
'Two cars in the top-10 and scoring points with both cars, it's a realistic proposition for us.
'We were competitive at all tracks this year, apart from Barcelona.
On fifth in championship: 'It would be a great result, it doesn't feel comfortable, our main goal is to fix some of the foundational things which should help us on our journey this year.'
How has Max Verstappen accumulated 11 penalty points?
3 points, 2025 Spanish GP – Causing a collision with George Russell (expires 1 June 2026)
2 points, 2024 Abu Dhabi GP – Causing a collision with Oscar Piastri (expires 8 December 2025)
1 point, 2024 Qatar GP – Driving unnecessarily slowly on a cooldown lap in qualifying (expires 1 December 2025)
1 point, 2024 Brazil GP sprint – Being under the minimum VSC delta time (expires 1 November 2025)
2 points, 2024 Mexico GP – Forcing Lando Norris off-track (expires 27 October 2025)
2 points, 2024 Austrian GP – Causing a collision with Lando Norris (expires 30 June 2025)
(12 points in a 12-month period trigger a race ban)

Red Bull boss Christian Horner:
On Verstappen-Russell incident: 'He apologised in the debrief, a very frustrating race for him and the team. It was one of those things, with hindsight, I'm sure he wouldn't have done what he did.
'He's a driver who drives with a huge amount of emotion, that's the brilliance he has. Occasionally, you make misjudgements - you see it with all the greats, Senna, Schumacher. He immediately apologised to the team.'
On Ferrari rumours: 'I'm not going anywhere. It's always flattering being associated with other teams, particularly Ferrari, but I'm not going anywhere. Been here 21 years, don't have any intention on being anywhere else.'

Morocco reveals ambitious £887m plan to host African F1 race
Morocco looks set to enter the competitive race to host an F1 race in Africa with a spectacular $1.2m (£887m) plan revealed near the coastal city of Tangier.
Both South Africa – at either the Kyalami track near Johannesburg or a Cape Town street circuit, and Rwanda have expressed strong interest in hosting a grand prix, perhaps as early as 2027.
Africa is the only habitable continent that F1 does not host a race in, amidst the congested 24-event calendar. The last grand prix in Africa was the 1993 South African GP.
But now, Morocco is aiming to build a mega-project 20km south of Tangier, which will include a Grade 1 circuit fit to host F1 and MotoGP, a theme park, a shopping mall and a marina.

Ferrari criticism 'disrespectful' and harming team's chances – Fred Vasseur
When pressed on his own future, an animated Vasseur, in his third season in charge of the Italian giants, said: 'I have to stay calm otherwise I will be reported to the stewards.
'It is not about me, because I can manage this, but it is about the people of the team and to throw their names like this is disrespectful for them and for their family.
'I don't understand the target? Perhaps it is to give s*** to the team and in this case I don't see the point. Maybe for them it is to exist? But it is clearly hurting the team.'

F1 cult hero wins Le Mans 24 Hours to join Fernando Alonso in exclusive club

Robert Kubica has become a Le Mans winner more than a decade on from the career-changing crash that he was lucky to survive. The Polish former Formula 1 racer, alongside team-mates Yifei Ye and Phil Hanson, won the world-famous 24-hour race for the first time on Sunday. Kubica made his name racing in Formula 1 and won the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix near the beginning of what promised to be a fine career. He had impressed with BMW Sauber to the point he was set to land a coveted race seat with Ferrari. But that all changed in early 2011 with a crash while rallying which almost killed him. He survived, but needed a partial amputation to his right forearm as well as other very serious injuries. ---

George Russell's X-rated message after Canada pole sets up another battle with Max Verstappen

Oscar Piastri finished third — but it was a horror show for his McLaren team-mate Lando Norris, who was down in seventh. Russell said: 'It was awesome. To get the pole, that last lap was one of the most exhilarating of my life. 'This lap is mighty and to cross the line in P1 was a real surprise — but I was so chuffed with it.' READ MORE F1 NEWS The pits Abandoned F1 track overgrown and covered in rubbish 13 years after last race It was sweet revenge for Russell, who was deliberately driven into by Verstappen in Barcelona last time out. That earned the Dutchman three points on his licence — and the four-time world champion now needs to be on his best behaviour in Canada this weekend as he is just one penalty point away from suspension. When asked about Verstappen, Russell added: 'We're mates, it's all good. 'I've got a few more points on my licence to play with!' JOIN SUN VEGAS: GET £50 BONUS 4 George Russell couldn't contain his delight with his incredible lap Credit: X@F1 The row clearly did not put Verstappen off his stride. The 27-year-old said: 'I felt good all weekend — the car was actually in a good window. George Russell furiously hits back at Max Verstappen after the F1 world champion's stinging criticism of him 'I'm very happy with qualifying. I'm already very happy with what we achieved to be on the front row.' Norris was the culprit of a major cock-up in Q3 as he went well wide on his first lap in the final session and failed to record a lap time. The big error from the McLaren driver meant he had to have two more goes at recording a lap time, having already put their tyres through their paces. Italian teenager Kimi Antonelli bagged fourth, while Lewis Hamilton made it into fifth ahead of sixth-placed Fernando Alonso. It came down to the wire and pole position could not be called as Russell fired a warning shot, notching the fastest time in Q2 just ahead of Norris. Verstappen showed you can write him off at your peril as he flew into provisional pole ahead of Piastri in the final session. Yet Aussie Piastri said: 'After how practice went, I'm pretty happy with myself at the moment. I'm already very happy with what we achieved to be on the front row. George Russell 'I'm pretty happy with third, which is a bit different, but I'll take it here.' Alex Albon's engine cover bizarrely flew off his Williams six minutes into Q1 and brought a red flag so debris could be cleared from the track. The cover flew off down the back straight and he nearly lost control into the final chicane due to less downforce. And there was beef between Carlos Sainz and Isack Hadjar in the first session as the Williams driver was booted out in 17th as he felt the Racing Bulls rookie 'massively impeded him'. Williams team principal James Vowles said: 'It's frustrating. Disrupted session, but we had a fast car. 'That's just a car that's staying on line and clearly not aware of what's around him. 'Hadjar, I'm sure, will receive a penalty. We will focus on Alex now.'
