F1 cult hero wins Le Mans 24 Hours to join Fernando Alonso in exclusive club
Robert Kubica has become a Le Mans winner more than a decade on from the career-changing crash that he was lucky to survive. The Polish former Formula 1 racer, alongside team-mates Yifei Ye and Phil Hanson, won the world-famous 24-hour race for the first time on Sunday.
Kubica made his name racing in Formula 1 and won the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix near the beginning of what promised to be a fine career. He had impressed with BMW Sauber to the point he was set to land a coveted race seat with Ferrari.
But that all changed in early 2011 with a crash while rallying which almost killed him. He survived, but needed a partial amputation to his right forearm as well as other very serious injuries.

However, the British driver enjoyed a better exit onto the start-finish straight and sensed an opportunity to squeeze past Piastri. But Norris misjudged the move and crashed into the back of his team-mate's car. Norris screeched to a halt with damage. 'Are you alright, dude,' said Norris' engineer Will Joseph on the radio. 'Yes, I am sorry,' replied Norris. 'It's all my bad. All my fault. Unlucky. Sorry. Stupid from me.' 'If we were too aggressive going through a corner and we clearly got it wrong than that is one thing, but it was an unfortunate incident on a straight and it will not change anything and that is how it should be because we are both fighting for the world championship.'

Canadian GP result in doubt as Red Bull protest George Russell victory
Red Bull have protested the result of the Canadian Grand Prix. Both race winner George Russell and second-placed Max Verstappen have been summoned to see the stewards with Red Bull protesting directly against the Mercedes racer. The reason behind the protest has not been confirmed. However, Verstappen had accused Russell of breaking rules during the late safety car period caused by Lando Norris' crash. ---
