Adviser to UAE president warns of regional gridlock without strategic shifts

Arab News5 days ago

DUBAI: Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, defended the country's foreign policy and addressed the Arab world's uncertain geopolitical landscape during a panel discussion at the Arab Media Summit in Dubai.
'How can you explain everything that is happening in the Arab world now?' asked Taher Baraka, presenter at Al Arabiya.
Gargash responded with a single word: 'Uncertainty.'
Elaborating on this theme, he pointed to the fragile resurgence of nations such as Syria and Lebanon as central to the region's current volatility.
'We have two Arab worlds,' he said. 'There is the GCC, and then there are Arab countries that are suffering.'
Gargash emphasized the UAE's proactive foreign policy, which he described as essential to fostering stability and peace for the Emirati people.
'We know we have to address the problems in our region,' he said. 'Yes, there are challenges — but there is also significant potential.'
He also addressed criticism surrounding the UAE's decision to normalize ties with Israel, a move that has sparked debate across the Arab world.
'Normalization is being used as a scare tactic,' he said. 'But it is a sovereign decision, and for us, it was the right choice.'
Despite this stance, Gargash reaffirmed the UAE's enduring support for the Palestinian cause.
'Our commitment to the Palestinian people and their right to a state remains unchanged. Their suffering brings us real pain,' he said.
Gargash argued that without normalization, the Arab world risks clinging to outdated strategies that perpetuate conflict and division.
Using the metaphor of a 'bottleneck,' he described the political paralysis in Syria and Lebanon, where armed militias continue to undermine national sovereignty.
'We cannot have two armies in one country,' he said. 'We need realistic priorities.'
Gargash highlighted the UAE's role in supporting crisis-hit nations, pointing to the large Lebanese and Syrian diasporas in the Emirates.
'The UAE has been the breathing lungs for Lebanon and Syria during the height of their crises. Many of their citizens came here and thrived. If they can innovate here, they can innovate in Lebanon or Syria,' he said.

Kuwait Calls on International Community to Ensure Syria's Security, Stability

Kuwait reaffirmed on Sunday its commitment to bolstering international efforts to guarantee Syria's security and stability, while preserving its sovereignty and territorial integrity. This came during an official round of talks between Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Emir of Kuwait, and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. The discussions were also attended by Kuwait's Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, and Minister of the Amiri Diwan Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah. Kuwait marks the Syrian president's seventh stop in the Arab world and ninth internationally since taking office in January 2025, following the ouster of former President Bashar al-Assad on December 8, 2024. According to Minister Mohammad Abdullah Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, the talks highlighted 'the deep-rooted fraternal ties between the two countries and peoples, and ways to support and enhance them in all fields.' The two sides reviewed the situation in Syria and reaffirmed the importance of bolstering international efforts to ensure the country's security, stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The discussions also covered key regional and international developments, and ways to support unified Arab action. Additionally, Kuwait's First Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Fahd Yousef Saud Al-Sabah, along with Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya, held extended talks with Al-Sharaa and Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani to explore mechanisms for enhancing cooperation and coordination between Kuwait and Syria. During his visit, Al-Sharaa also met with several Kuwaiti business leaders to discuss development projects and investment opportunities in Syria. He also held a meeting with members of the Syrian expatriate community in Kuwait. Damascus is seeking to strengthen ties with Arab and Western leaders in the aftermath of Assad's fall, hoping that the lifting of economic sanctions and an influx of Gulf aid and investments will help rebuild the war-torn nation. On Saturday, Saudi Arabia's foreign minister announced that the Kingdom, in coordination with Qatar, would provide financial support for Syrian state employees. A joint statement from Saudi Arabia and Qatar noted that this financial assistance would be distributed over three months. This initiative followed a previous contribution by both countries in April, which helped Syria pay off around $15 million in arrears owed to the World Bank. The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development has extended 28 loans to Syria, totaling 333 million Kuwaiti dinars (approximately $1.085 billion). Kuwait also hosts a large Syrian community estimated at around 200,000 people.

Lebanese President Aoun reviews ties, cooperation with Iraqi official

LONDON: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun discussed ties and cooperation with Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid and Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani during his visit to Iraq on Sunday. Aoun stressed the importance of establishing an Arab mutual interest system to enhance shared interests among Arab countries during his meeting with Al-Sudani. In a separate meeting with Rashid at the Presidential Palace in Baghdad, Aoun commended Iraq's support and donations, including fuel shipments to generate electricity, for the Lebanese people during the recent round of the Israeli-Hezbollah war, which flared up in September 2024. Aoun said that Lebanon and Iraq face the challenge of terrorism, which is being addressed through security agencies in both countries. The two presidents emphasized the urgency to end the Israeli war in the Gaza Strip and to support the Palestinian cause without allowing it to be compromised, according to the NNA agency. Aoun said that Israel must withdraw from the five areas inside the Lebanese territory it has controlled since 2024 and stop its repeated attacks on the country that undermine peace efforts in the region. Rashid affirmed Iraq's support for Lebanon and said that Baghdad views positively the recent developments in the country following the formation of the new government in early 2025.
