Paul Danan's tragic regret that saw him spiral from Hollyoaks fame to retail job

Daily Mirror28-05-2025

Paul Danan, who starred as Sol Patrick in Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks, spoke out about the devastating impact his reality fame had on his acting career after appearing in Love Island
Paul Danan made a name for himself after starring in the original Love Island, but it had a knock-on effect on his career.
The Hollyoaks star, whose inquest is today, tragically died at the age of 46 on January 15. A statement by his management read: "It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the passing of @pauldanan at just 46 years old. Known for his television presence, exceptional talent, and unwavering kindness, Paul was a beacon of light to so many.

"His untimely departure will leave irreplaceable voids in the lives of all who knew him. During this difficult time, we kindly request respect and privacy for Paul's family, friends, and colleagues. No further comments will be made at this time." The actor rose to fame playing Sol Patrick in the Channel 4 soap between 1997 and 2001.

As he tried to carve a new identity away from the soap, Paul went on to appear on reality TV shows Celebrity Love Island and Celebrity Big Brother. In 2005, he was an islander alongside the likes of Calum Best and Rebecca Loos. The series was won by Jayne Middlemiss and Fran Cosgrave. But while it did well for some stars, it only set Paul back in acting.
While on an episode of the Dozen podcast in November 2024, he reflected on his career choices. Speaking about life after being in the villa, he said: "I've never known fame like it. I've never seen people go so mental. Four years on a soap opera - that was nothing compared to these six weeks [in terms] of the stature of fame."
Host Liam Tuffs asked: "So Love Island was the one that skyrocketed you into fame?" Paul, who returned for the second series in 2006, said: "Like ridiculously." He said that it was "mental" that he was on the cover of magazines and said it became "too much," saying that he hadn't ever wanted to be famous. He added: "I just want to be respected as an actor."
But he realised that reality TV success was not beneficial for his dreams of acting in Hollywood. He said: "It didn't help with my acting career because suddenly people were like 'Oh, we don't want to hire a reality star!'

"Casting directors were a bit snobby like that, they don't people want to see me on a TV show thinking 'Isn't that the guy from Love Island?' It wasn't good for my acting career and it took a long time to get that back. I don't know if it's even fully redeemed even all these years later."
According to the star, back in 2005 through to 2007, actors who appeared on reality TV shows were seen in a bad light, instead of remembering their career in films, theatre and soaps. And this led to him seeking out work outside of the industry in order to make ends meet. He even worked at a phone repair shop as well as retail clothing stores.
He said: "I worked in a place called I Smashed It, which is where if you if you drop your iPhone or your phone and the screen smashes, then we'll fix the screen for you. I was working there for a bit, probably about 10 years ago. And that was just to get a bit of money on the side." Paul added: "I probably didn't want to do a reality show did I? I should have just stuck to my acting."

Rylan's mum begged Celebrity Gogglebox editors to cut out remarks

Rylan Clark and his mum Linda have been fan favourites on Celebrity Gogglebox since they joined the Channel 4 show in 2019 - but there are some conversations they've asked to be left on the cutting room floor Rylan Clark and his mum Linda have pleaded with the Celebrity Gogglebox editors to steer clear of airing certain discussions, worrying they might be "career-ending". The popular pair made their comeback on Channel 4's beloved series last week, and they're in good company with celebrities like Vernon Kay and Paddy McGuinness sharing the sofa. ‌ Previously speaking about their on-screen partnership, Rylan, 36, joked that the editors "must like" them, due to what viewers get to see of the pair on television, reports the Manchester Evening News. ‌ Rylan eagerly agreed: "We're lucky that the editors clearly like us, because the stuff they've had to cut out is career-ending." Linda chimed in with a further caution: "[I say] 'Don't you dare say what I just said'." A chuckling Rylan remarked on their editorial requests: "We're like, 'Yeah, can we not use that, please'". They've swiftly become one of the audience's top duos since joining Gogglebox in 2019, celebrated for their charming and witty rapport. ‌ Rylan shared how the show was an ideal chance for his mum to work with him; as she had declined other offers due to her Crohn's disease, which limits her outings. Chatting to Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary, Rylan explained: "Mum has got Crohn's [disease] as well, she doesn't really go out that much and things like that." He added: "But, when Gogglebox came along and they asked me to do it, I said, 'I would love to do it with my mum'." ‌ During their joint interview, he turned to his mum and said: "Because, you know, I think you came down to X Factor once didn't you, just one time. "So when this was the case, she lives five minutes from me, so I was like, 'Mum look it's at my house, you'll feel comfortable'." ‌ Linda added: "You feel like you're not on the telly, you just sit there." Rylan previously disclosed that out of "hundreds" of work opportunities that have come their way, a travel show was also on the cards. ‌ "It would be hilarious, but she's just not well enough to do it," he confessed to Daily Star. "Gogglebox is enough for us. She feels comfortable doing that show because we're just sat in my kitchen." According to the NHS, Crohn's disease is a chronic condition where part of the digestive system becomes inflamed. There's presently no cure, but treatments exist that can help prevent or manage the symptoms effectively. Although a travel show might be off the cards for Linda, audiences can still catch her appearances on Rylan's weekly BBC Radio 2 show and his YouTube series, Air Rylan.

'Love Island is still making a huge mistake after 10 years - we need change'

Love Island has been on our screens for 10 years. That's 10 years of 'my type of paper', 10 years of 'grafting' and 10 years of being 'pied'. But 10 years later, there's one thing Love Island is still doing so wrong. The ITV2 show made its return this week for a brand new series - its 12th - with a new set of Islanders entering the villa. The show has had a number of civilian series and two All Stars series and yet we still have the same issue as we've always had. Love Island has seem to step around the memo on body diversity. Whilst the average women is a size 16, Love Island has never featured a woman over a size 12. In a world where we're told to celebrate and love our bodies, how can a show as big as Love Island make such a huge mistake by not including both men and women of all body shapes? Are we meant to be believe that women - or men - over a certain size are not deserving of love, that they should not appreciate their body, that they should hide away? I finally thought we might be getting somewhere this year, when the show opened with a different form of matchmaking. The women were tasked with picking who they wanted to couple up with based on the person's name, job and one line about themselves. Finally, one part of this show might not be about how you look! Love Island reaches millions of young people every single episode. Why can't we use this time to promote and encourage body diversity? Social media is full of body positive influencers encouraging us to love ourselves for who we are - did Love Island just miss the memo that everyone else got a few years back? I - and many women and men - have spent years not feeling good enough because of the size of their stomach, or their arms, or the clothes size they wear. Surely, Love Island could use their huge platform to remind people that love comes in every shape or size. That is not to say the women and men in the villa don't deserve love themselves, of course they do, but so do all the other men and women across the UK that don't fit into a 'specific' body type. Love Island has a long way to go before it proves it can be fully inclusive. From someone who is tired of seeing one body type on our screens in big reality shows like Love Island, you deserve to be anyone's type on paper - for who you are and not how you look.
