Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has allowed making changes to the boundaries of various administrative units, including districts and urban local bodies, ahead of the Census..The changes, however, have to be made before June 30.."The state government does hereby allow changes in administrative boundaries of the districts, sub-divisions, tehsils, revenue villages and urban local bodies so fixed, including boundaries fixed under any law for the time being in force, before June 30, 2025," according to a notification issued by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department on Sunday..Civil aviation ministry gives in-principle nod for airports in Rajasthan, Odisha.The boundaries of all the administrative units will be frozen from July 1, 2025 for the ensuing Census, it said..According to official sources, the state government has frozen the boundaries of the administrative units since 2020 for the conduct of the Census in 2021. However, the government allowed changes in the boundaries several times, for a definite period, to create new units including new revenue villages..Speaking to reporters here, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said the decision was taken to dispose of the proposals received for the creation of new revenue villages.."Once the Census starts, the revenue boundaries cannot be changed till the exercise is completed. So, the direction was issued," Pujari added.

Odisha revenue minister assures action against sand mafia
BHUBANESWAR : Revenue minister Suresh Pujari on Saturday said Odisha would not be allowed to follow the lawless path in sand operations like it is in Bihar and West Bengal, while responding to the recent assault of an additional tehsildar in Kaptipada block, Mayurbhanj district, by the sand mafia. He promised stringent action against the sand mafia regardless of their connections, while speaking to mediapersons here on Saturday. "The Kaptipada incident represents a serious escalation in conflict between law enforcement and the sand mafia. The attack on officers performing their enforcement duties is similar to Bihar and West Bengal, where criminals challenge state authority. The administration's commitment in curbing illegal sand trafficking faces violent resistance from well-organised criminal networks. We pledged decisive action against both the direct perpetrators and their masterminds," said Pujari. This zero-tolerance approach signals a strong message that such attacks on govt officials will not be tolerated. The incident serves as a watershed moment in the ongoing battle against illegal sand mining operations, officials said. Kaptipada additional tehsildar Bhimakanta Majhi suffered injuries after an attack by the sand mafia near Suno river bed on Monday morning. In the incident, Majhi's car was damaged. Majhi, based on intelligence reports, went to inspect sand being lifted illegally using excavators. When he opposed it, he was attacked. Police said the miscreants, mostly goons of the sand mafia, intercepted Majhi's car and tried to stop him from venturing into the sand lifting site in the river bed. Pujari announced free sand provision for Pradhan Mantri Awas beneficiaries, with a draft standard operating procedure (SOP) already in preparation to streamline the process. "The most important thing is how to facilitate the supply of sand at low cost to the lower middle class and poor. We will introduce the provision of issuing permits to beneficiaries of PM Awas to lift at least two tractor fulls of sand for free for construction of houses. The PM Awas will be free from the sand cost burden," Pujari told reporters. BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty commented that the minister's statements are merely an attempt to whitewash the obvious collusion between administration officials and the mining mafia. "Instead of taking concrete action, the minister has limited himself to making empty rhetoric," he said. Mohanty said there has been a drastic decline in revenue from minor minerals from Rs 1,485 crore in 2023-24 to just Rs 600 crore in 2024-25.

Punjab govt working for wellbeing of underprivileged sections, says CM Mann at loan waiver event
Amritsar, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday said his government is working untiringly for the wellbeing of the state's weaker and underprivileged sections. Addressing a gathering after handing over loan waiver certificates to the beneficiaries here, Mann said the previous governments in the state waived loans of the affluent people but didn't bother about the welfare of the poor. 'For the first time in the history of Punjab, this reprieve is being extended to the underprivileged and weaker sections of society,' Mann said. The loan waiver scheme worth ₹67.84 crore has benefited around 4,800 families of loanees of the Punjab Scheduled Castes Land Development and Finance Corporation , the chief minister said. On June 3, the Punjab Cabinet gave its nod to waive loans amounting to ₹67.84 crore taken by over 4,000 Dalit families from the PSCFC. Mann said the waiver covers all loans disbursed by the PSCFC up to March 31, 2020, offering significant relief to SC and Divyangjan loanees. The move will benefit 4,727 loanees for an aggregate amount of ₹67.84 crore. The scheme will cover all the loanees, including 4,685 defaulting loanees and 42 regular loanees, government sources said. Addressing the gathering, Mann said 'no due certificates' will be issued by the state government and the full amount of ₹67.84 crore comprising principal, interest and penal interest calculated as of April 30, 2025, will be reimbursed to the PSCFC by the state government. The loanees who previously availed benefits under the earlier waiver schemes are also eligible for coverage under this initiative, Mann said. No recovery proceedings will be initiated against the loanees and their accounts will be considered fully settled as of the cut-off date, he added. According to the 2011 Census, Scheduled Castes constitute 31.94 per cent of Punjab's total population and many members of this community have availed loans from the PSCFC to set up self-employment ventures aimed at economic upliftment. However, Mann said some borrowers were unable to repay their loans due to circumstances beyond their control, leading to defaults. These families could not repay their loans due to circumstances such as demise of the main earning member, prolonged illness, or having no other source of income, etc. Recovering these loans from such people was unjust, so the state government has decided to waive them, the chief minister said.

Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson accuses DMK of misleading public on census, delimitation

'The allegations of betrayal levelled against Palaniswami by Kanimozhi are unsubstantiated and seem to be a deflection from the real issues plaguing the state. The DMK's stance on delimitation appears driven by political opportunism rather than genuine concern for the state's interests,' he stated. Meanwhile, Prasad said that Home Minister Amit Shah has clarified that no state's rights will be compromised during the delimitation process. This clarification should alleviate concerns about the potential impact on Tamil Nadu. CM Stalin's continued propagation of misinformation regarding delimitation, despite Amit Shah's clarification, is concerning. It appears to be a deliberate attempt to create confusion and mislead the public. The people of Tamil Nadu deserve accurate information and transparent governance. Politicians should prioritise the state's welfare over partisan interests. He further said that the constitutional delimitation process should proceed without political interference and that any concerns should be addressed through constructive dialogue between the state and the Centre. Ultimately, the people of Tamil Nadu will judge the DMK's actions and statements on delimitation. It is crucial for politicians to prioritise the state's interests and work towards its progress rather than engage in divisive politics. Meanwhile, on Friday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin remarked that the delay in the Census is 'no accident,' and the proposed delimitation exercise is 'no coincidence.' (ANI)
