On India-US trade talks and likely impact on IT

: I was using the word uncertain a lot and people said you are saying uncertain so many times. I would say people are going to wait and watch more and I have a feeling maybe once these discussions are over, sometime in July and August, there will be greater clarity on the direction the trade discussions take and also the new bill will be in place. All that will provide more clarity. Maybe the first week of August onwards, we should see a more definitive direction in the market.

How are the clients responding this time? From February till now we have been waiting for this and ambiguity, uncertainty are the words which have been coming in and this is a general sentiment across industries and clients. Is there any delay in decision making due to that?
K Krithivasan:
There is. If a particular project is going to yield definitive and immediate results, you find that customers are starting off those projects, which typically tend to be the cost optimization projects. If a project is for investment or transformation, where the return on investment is uncertain, the customers are willing to wait for greater clarity before they embark or commit those investments.
In terms of uncertainty, there is sometimes opportunity as well. I was really impressed with the choice of words you made during the release of the use case based approach to ROI led scaling of AI. I want to understand, are there new areas which you are focusing on and what is this approach which you want to apply now?
Aarthi Subramanian
: In the initial days of Gen-AI, everybody was in experimental mode, trying to understand what the technology is and what it can deliver. But after two-three years, now the power of the technology is well understood. So, what customers are looking at is how they shift from experimentation to a use case based approach to delivering projects which deliver a business value. That is the shift we are seeing.
From the new services revenues perspective – whether it is AI, cyber security, public cloud or TCS Interactive – many of these new service lines have grown well in this quarter and continue to have good demand. In terms of investing in these areas and especially talking about AI, we are looking at building industry specific solutions bespoke for a customer and we are also investing in building agentic AI solutions which are industry solutions that we can take to customers proactively where we can go and do this rapid build projects which can deliver short projects but can deliver value faster and that is one of the initiatives that we are driving.

The second area we are looking at is our flagship product, TCS WisdomNext. We have just upgraded it with the version 2.0 which has agentic AI capabilities and we are using our product and a platform-based approach to really see how we can accelerate buildout of these solutions.
The third important element in any technology is partnerships. We are working with hyperscalers, model providers, and also new age partners like Vianai. We have just signed a partnership and we are seeing good uptake there.
The last part of the equation and the most important is talent. We are doubling down on building the talent in a phase where the technology is rapidly evolving.
You have mentioned that there is some impact on demand. Which are these areas which you have identified?
K Krithivasan:
You can look at it both from a vertical and horizontal perspective. Suppose you look at it from a vertical perspective, for instance manufacturing. Manufacturing auto as a segment that gets impacted because of the EV transition and confusion on where the investment is going to be because many of the auto manufacturers invested heavily in EV, but EV sales are still late to pick up globally, so there is a pullback on investments by auto.

Similarly, in the BFSI sector, insurance has been impacted for multiple reasons, particularly catastrophic losses in the US and other places. Capital markets tend to thrive under volatility, more than others. This is a broad classification. The tech sector, by and large, is doing well or if you take telcos, despite the expected reduction in interest rates, capex is not happening.

Two, this FTA along with many other FTAs signed by India with other countries, projects India as a nation committed to free trade," VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Ltd, fact that this FTA has come during a time of tariff wars is commendable, and hopefully this will improve India's chances of striking a fair-trade deal with the US, Vijayakumar noted.."Sectors like textiles, leather, food processing, automobiles, pharmaceuticals and gems and jewellery, which are expected to benefit from the FTA, will be on the market radar," he India has opened its market to various consumer goods, including chocolates, biscuits, and cosmetics, it will gain greater access to export products such as textiles, footwear, gems and jewellery, sports goods, and toys.

RS adjourned till Monday amid continued Oppn protest, legislative gridlock
The Rajya Sabha witnessed its fifth consecutive day of legislative impasse following persistent disruptions during the post-noon session, capping a day of high political tension and procedural deadlock. The Chair adjourned proceedings till Monday as Opposition parties sustained vociferous protests over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls. With the state heading into crucial Assembly elections later this year, the Opposition has raised sharp concerns over alleged discrepancies and procedural opacity surrounding the revision process, demanding a full-fledged debate under Rule 267. Despite repeated appeals from the Chair and Union ministers for order and constructive dialogue, the House remains mired in disruption, reflecting escalating tensions over electoral integrity and institutional accountability. Deputy Chairman Harivansh had earlier adjourned the House till noon after rejecting nearly 28 Opposition notices under Rule 267, which sought suspension of regular business to discuss issues ranging from the SIR in Bihar to constitutional concerns in Manipur and the impact of India-UK trade negotiations on the Indian economy. When the House reconvened at noon, Ghanshyam Tiwari resumed proceedings with Question Hour, calling BJP MP K. Lakshman (Uttar Pradesh) to seek a government response on a specific campaign initiative. However, the session quickly descended into chaos as Opposition members raised slogans, drowning out Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's attempts to speak. Chouhan repeatedly appealed for order, stressing the importance of legislative business, but the disruptions continued unabated. Anticipating further breakdown, the Chair adjourned the House till Monday. Earlier in the day, Zero Hour saw similar scenes. Backed by the DMK-led alliance, Haasan was elected unopposed and pledged to uphold constitutional values. He was joined by fellow DMK members Rajathi, S.R. Sivalingam, and P. Wilson. Routine business continued in parallel. Commerce Minister Jitendra Prasad tabled the grant demands and a report on India's trade cooperation with Gulf nations. Members Ram Nath Thakur, Bhagirath Choudhary, Kiran Choudhary, and Shaktisinh Gohil laid committee reports. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Dr L. India misses chance to tackle UK carbon tax in trade pact. Why is it concerning?
India's efforts to secure a concession for its small and medium enterprises under the UK's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) did not materialise, as the text of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) released on Thursday made no mention of a resolution on the contentious issue. The UK's CBAM, which is set to come into effect from January 1, 2027, is expected to impact India's exports of steel, aluminium and other carbon-intensive goods. India's steel and aluminium exports are already facing steep tariff restrictions from the US after US President Donald Trump raised the tariffs on the items to 50 per cent. An absence of a resolution not only weakens India's position—as it missed the opportunity to address the levy within a legal framework—but also casts a shadow over the duty concessions won for 99 per cent of its exports to the UK under the long-negotiated trade deal as UK could raise tariffs on industrial imports once it implements CBAM. Trade experts believe that if the UK has not conceded ground on the carbon tax, the EU may also refuse to offer any concessions on its own carbon measures. Hervé Delphin, EU Ambassador to India, told The Indian Express last month that the EU's CBAM is not part of negotiations. 'CBAM is not a trade measure. It is not part of trade and the FTA. It's about compliance with our climate agenda to accelerate decarbonisation,' Delphin told the newspaper. While the Ministry of Commerce and Industry claims that the UK trade deal will allow around 99 per cent of Indian exports to benefit from zero-duty access to the UK market, CBAM significantly could alter that. The UK government has said that the carbon tax will apply to both 'direct and indirect emissions' embodied in imported CBAM goods, 'including those emissions embodied in relevant precursor goods at a point further up the value chain'. This means that London, based on its carbon calculations, could impose duties on Indian intermediate exports as well as finished products. Indian goods exports worth at least $775 million to the UK, therefore, continue to face the risk of higher duties under its carbon tax mechanism. As per the CBAM regulation, the UK will place a carbon price on some of the most emissions-intensive industrial goods imported to the UK—covering the aluminium, cement, fertiliser, hydrogen, and iron & steel sectors—which are considered at risk of carbon leakage. But the scope will increase going forward. 'The sectoral and product-level scope of the CBAM will be kept under review beyond 2027 as new evidence comes to light to reflect changes to carbon leakage risk, as well as methodological and technological advances,' a statement read. India's exports to the UK rose by 12.6 per cent to $14.5 billion, while imports grew by 2.3 per cent to $8.6 billion in 2024–25. Bilateral goods trade between India and the UK increased to $21.34 billion in 2023–24 from $20.36 billion in 2022–23. As no concession was secured under the FTA, India could challenge the regulation at the WTO on the grounds that CBAM violates special and differential treatment (SDT) provisions, which advocate longer implementation periods for developing countries to safeguard their trade interests. However, trade law experts warn that the CBAM regulations in both the UK and EU may be in effect by the time the WTO rules on the matter, given the dysfunction of the organisation's Dispute Settlement Body (DSB). They also said there is limited likelihood of an adverse ruling on CBAM at the WTO, as the EU remains one of the strongest supporters of the institution. A more probable outcome would be adjustments to the regulation rather than its complete withdrawal.
