Jom Heboh returns with Ejen Ali stars at KL Base kick-off

KUALA LUMPUR: Karnival Jom Heboh (KJH), the beloved roadshow-style carnival that has delighted Malaysians for over two decades, returns this year with five stops nationwide — kicking off on May 30 at KL Base, Kuala Lumpur. The much-anticipated event will continue its tour across other states, including Penang, Johor, Kelantan, and Sarawak. Adding to the excitement at KL Base will be a special appearance by cast members from the hit film Ejen Ali 2, which is currently screening in cinemas nationwide. Media Prima Omnia (Direct Solutions) chief operating officer Datuk Mohd Efendi Omar said this year's KJH would offer a wide range of activities, with more than 200 booths set up to attract visitors. He said that the programmes were curated to provide entertainment for the whole family, ensuring a fun-filled day for all attendees. "This year's edition will feature over 200 booths showcasing a variety of brands, including products from small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and agro-based businesses. "Visitors can also look forward to attractions such as hot air balloon rides and food festivals, which will be part of the festivities at each location," he said during the KJH convoy flag-off ceremony held at Balai Berita Bangsar today. The convoy, which includes members of the DRKnight Malaysia Motor Club, was flagged off by Media Prima Berhad (MPB) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Syed Hussian Aljunid. Also present was MPB Group chief financial officer Rosli Sabarudin. Mohd Efendi said that KJH remained committed to supporting and promoting local entrepreneurs, with many established and emerging SMEs participating to expand their brand visibility. "KJH has always been a platform for local products to gain recognition. Many SME entrepreneurs are leveraging this opportunity to grow their businesses and connect with a broader audience," he said. He also said that about 50 celebrities, including popular artistes, would be making appearances throughout the carnival. Visitors will have the chance to meet them and enjoy live performances. "This time, we're bringing in the beloved Queen of Rock, Ella, to entertain the crowd. Other artistes such as Khai Bahar and Shiha Zikir will also be performing at KJH," he said.

Kedah vape traders told to cease operations by December

Published on: Thursday, May 22, 2025 Published on: Thu, May 22, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: The state government said seven months is enough time for retailers to shift to other businesses. PETALING JAYA: Vape retailers in Kedah have been given until December to cease operations following the state-wide ban on the sale of electronic cigarettes. State housing, local government and health committee chairman Mansor Zakaria said the state government would not extend the grace period as seven months was enough time for retailers to shift to other businesses. In a Berita Harian report, Mansor said full enforcement would begin early next year, and that the authorities would not hesitate to seize vape products. 'Most business licences will expire this December, and a small number will expire in January and February next year. If they (the operators) remain stubborn and defy the order, we will issue compounds and confiscate their goods,' he said. 'Vape traders are expected to switch to other businesses after this. Seven months is a reasonable amount of time,' he said, adding that the decision was reached in a meeting with all local authorities in Kedah this week. Mansor also called on the health ministry to revoke all licences for the manufacture and sale of vape at the federal level. Advertisement 'The health ministry is always reminding the public of the harmful effects of vape, so the federal government needs to take firm action and ban its sale,' he said. Last week, Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor said the state government planned to stop the sale of vape and e-cigarettes in Kedah by next year. He said the move was part of the state government's policy to tackle the growing abuse of synthetic drugs, including among school students. Sanusi also said that vape products were increasingly being misused through the mixing of illegal substances into vape liquids before sale. Yesterday, Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Aminuddin Harun said the state was considering a ban on the sale of vape or electronic cigarettes in the state amid rising concern over their impact on public health, especially among the youth. Terengganu and Perlis will ban the sale of vape products from Aug 1, joining Johor and Kelantan which implemented bans in 2016 and 2015, respectively. Selangor and Penang are still weighing a blanket ban. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Unemployment, low wages forcing Sabahans to leave, BN chairman warns

KOTA KINABALU: The lack of job opportunities and low salaries are fuelling labour migration out of Sabah, a veteran politician said. Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, the Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, said the absence of high-paying jobs was driving many young Sabahans — including those with higher education — to move to Peninsular Malaysia in search of employment. "The reality is, Sabah is losing its skilled and professional human capital, which should have been the driving force behind its development. "This is the result of weak policies, failed economic planning, and the absence of truly impactful large-scale investments," he said in a statement. Citing a news report by Berita Harian in 2022, Bung said about 200,000 Sabahans were working in Peninsular Malaysia due to the lack of adequate opportunities at home. According to the Department of Statistics, studies show the main factor behind this migration is the promise of higher wages — between RM2,000 and RM4,999 — outside the state. Bung, who is the Kinabatangan MP, said that issues of unemployment and economic growth are clear indicators of a government's actual performance. "While I do not dismiss the government's efforts, as a responsible party, we must speak the truth — a truth that cannot be concealed by merely pleasant statistics," he said. In the fourth quarter of 2024, a total of 178,000 Sabahans — or 7.7 per cent — were unemployed, significantly higher compared to Sarawak (3.3 per cent), Kedah (1.7 per cent), and Kelantan (3.8 per cent). "In Sabah, unemployment remains high, mega projects do not reach the people, and economic policies are stagnant. I demand a sincere explanation," he said.
