Paul Danan found dead on sofa by friends with TV still on, inquest confirms
Paul Danan's friend found the telly icon dead on his sofa, it has been confirmed. Paul, 46, was found unresponsive at his home in Bristol on January 15. The late star, who was known for appearing on Celebrity Big Brother, Celebrity Love Island and starring as Sol Patrick on Channel 4's Hollyoaks, died from a cocktail of drugs, including cocaine and heroin.
The inquest heard that friends of Paul raised the alarm after not seeing him. They could not get hold of him for two days before he died, so got a ladder to look through an open window, and a neighbour entered to find him.
There he found Paul, dead sitting slumped at the edge of his sofa, with the television still on. Before the accidental overdose, in May 2024, a GP received a letter telling him Paul had suffered a non-intentional overdose and spent a period of time in intensive care. He left with a plan to use methadone but often reported repeated use of crack cocaine and heroin. Paul reported he had no intention to end his life and the overdose was accidental.
After the overdose he moved into his parents home for support while he tried to kick his habit. In August, 2024, he told a GP he had thoughts of 'suicidal ideation' but had no intentions of acting upon them. He was put under psychological care in the community but asked to be signed off work because he was not well.
Neighbour Melissa Crooks was the last person to see him two days before he died and that he had not checked WhatsApp since the time she left his flat.
An inquest into his death was held at Avon Coroner's Court in Bristol. "The circumstances are that Mr Danan was found unresponsive at his home address," said Alexis Camp from the coroner's office. Camp added: "Emergency services attended and confirmed he had sadly died. A post-mortem has taken place and samples have been removed for further analysis. No note was left."
A court had previously heard that Danan's provisional cause of death was the combined toxicity of heroin, methadone, codeine, cocaine, zopiclone and pregabalin, contributed to by benzodiazepine use. The inquest continued before Assistant Coroner Deborah Rookes.
It was listed as a read-inquest, meaning evidence was more than likely to be given in the form of written statements, rather than verbal evidence from witnesses. One day after his death, Danan was due to appear at a plea hearing at Warrington Magistrates' Court after being charged with possession of cocaine and cannabis, according to court documents.
He was also accused of driving whilst under the influence of drugs on October 2 last year, in Warrington, Cheshire. The actor had been open about his struggles with addiction, with entering rehab and trying to recover.
In 2017, Danan took part in Channel 5's Celebrity Big Brother, when he was evicted early, and said at the time he hoped the series would give him a "second chance" at his career. He regularly called for his return to Hollyoaks and later began the podcast The Morning After With Paul Danan, which lasted from 2019 until 2023.
In 2020, he started a drama workshop, Morning After Drama, which grew from online sessions during the pandemic to workshops in London, Oxford and the South West. His other appearances included on E4's Celebrity Coach Trip and Channel 4 sketch comedy programme The Kevin Bishop Show.
Danan discussed his substance abuse and recovery on ITV's The Jeremy Kyle Show in 2019, which he said began when he was a teenager. He said he had to "work hard at it every day to keep in recovery".
In 2010, he pleaded guilty to drugs and public order offences and was fined £350 and referred to a drugs agency for support by Stevenage Magistrates' Court. A statement from Independent Creative Management said: "It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the passing of Paul Danan at just 46 years old.
"Known for his television presence, exceptional talent, and unwavering kindness, Paul was a beacon of light to so many. His untimely departure will leave irreplaceable voids in the lives of all who knew him."

Ariana Grande's 'heavenly' perfume that 'lasts all day' 50% less at Superdrug
Ariana fans can save big on a large 100ml bottle on one of the singer's bestselling perfumes ahead of her return as Glinda in the Wicked sequel. Celebrity perfumes can always be a hit or miss. However, Ariana Grande's own line of scents have always been a huge hit with fans and regular shoppers alike. The 31 year-old musician and actress is once again about to grace our screens this November as everyone's favourite Good Witch, Glinda, as the sequel to last year's blockbuster Wicked debuted its first trailer today (June 5). Ahead of the highly anticipated film's release, fans of Grande can bag the chart-topper's bestselling Mod Blush EDP Spray for 50 percent less at Superdrug, as a large 100ml bottle has been dropped from £53 to just £26. Not only is that an impressive saving overall, but it's actually better value than buying a smaller 30ml bottle that is priced at £33, making it £8 more expensive for 20ml less. Mod Blush was first launched in 2022 as part of the singer's first ever fragrance duo, which also compromises a vanilla scent, with inspiration being drawn from the subculture of the same name that was popularised in 60s London. Described as a "modern" and "sensual" fragrance, Blush is a fruity, floral scent that boasts top notes of Italian Bergamot, passion fruit and raspberry that is boosted with pink pepper, creating an "energising introduction." Its heart notes include a blend of dewy rose petals, magnolia, pear, before finishing on base notes of ambrox, dreamwood and musks. The pink bottle itself is also a standout, boasting a round, sculptured shape that pays a modern homage to the fashion era of the 60s. There's no denying that celebrity perfumes are still popular for many of us, with 'it' pop girl of the moment Sabrina Carpenter launching her own line that includes the new Cherry Baby EDP that is now £19.99 for a 30ml at Debenhams. For the perfume fans not keen on a celebrity name, then a very similar fruity, floral aroma would be the Lancôme La Vie Est Belle L'Elixir Eau De Parfum, with a 50ml costing £85.60 at Boots after being dropped from £107. Of course, we can imagine many of Ariana's fans will want to take advantage of the Superdrug half-price deal on her Mod Blush fragrance, especially as it boasts a 4.6 rating for its "heavenly" aroma that is said to "last for ages." Beauty deal of the week It's almost Father's Day, and are you in need of some gift inspiration? If you don't want to buy a last minute gift, then we have you covered, as a bottle of aftershave is always a good shout and Debenhams has just cut the Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme Eau De Toilette from £92 to just £55.20 for a large 100ml bottle. There is also a smaller 60ml bottle that is a bit cheaper, with the price being reduced by 37 per cent from £68 to £43. Since reviews say it "stands out from the crowd", it's a deal worth bagging for dad. Launched in 2006, this YSL fragrance has been described as "a fragrance for the urban and charismatic 21st century male". For the guy in your life who likes to smell a little different, then this is the bottle to reach for. It opens on sparkling notes of bergamot, zesty cedarwood and Chinese ginger that has been met with the middle notes of violet leaves and basil flowers, offering a floral and spicy contrast. It is said to end on base notes of sandalwood, Virginia cedar wood and Haitian vetiver to "highlight this charismatic and magnetic fragrance." Those who want to stand out from the crowd will appreciate the YSL L'Homme Eau De Toilette, as it has earned a 4.7 rating from Debenhams fragrance buffs who have said it is "unusual" and "always gets compliments." One positive review read: "An unusual and outstanding men's perfume! What an interesting fresh yet a hint of spice men's perfume! It's different. Stands out from the crowd. Purchase the Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme Eau De Toilette (100ml) in the Debenhams sale here. Someone else remarked: "Ariana makes some really lovely fragrances and this one is no exception! Smells delicious. The vanilla really carries!" Not all of Grande's fans were impressed, as one three-star review read: "It's ok nothing special, fades very quickly for a perfume." However, someone else who was a fan of the perfume wrote: "Smells heavenly but so expensive will buy again." here.
