Judge denies bid by the suspect in Tupac Shakur's killing for a new trial in a jailhouse fight

Independenta day ago
Duane 'Keffe D' Davis, who is awaiting trial in the 1996 killing of rap icon Tupac Shakur, has lost a bid for a new trial in a separate battery case tied to a jailhouse fight.
The ruling came Wednesday after a tense hearing in a Las Vegas courtroom that underscored the high-profile status of the defendant and his upcoming trial in one of hip-hop's most infamous crimes.
The jurors who convicted Davis of battery in the jailhouse fight were put on the witness stand Wednesday. One by one, each of them denied claims by Davis' son and a man who describes himself as a journalist that they overheard one of the jurors talking about the battery case during a lunch break ahead of deliberations.
Both Davis' son, Duane Davis Jr., and the self-described journalist, Richard Bond, testified Wednesday about hearing the juror's comments in the hallway outside of the courtroom on the final day of a two-day trial in April.
'Those two witnesses do have a relationship and a bias and a motive to testify in a certain way, whether subconsciously or not,' Clark County District Judge Nadia Krall said while ruling from the bench.
It was revealed Wednesday when prosecutor Marc DiGiacomo questioned the men separately that they considered each other friends, that Bond had been sending money to both Duane Davis and his son, and that Bond had advised them to fire their attorney, Carl Arnold.
'Ever taken a class on journalistic ethics?' DiGiacomo asked Bond.
'No, I have not taken a class on journalistic ethics," Bond said.
The fight in December 2024 in a common room was captured on security video. Prosecutors said Davis was being escorted by a corrections officer back to his unit when he and another man exchanged words and then started fighting. Arnold said he was ambushed and acted in self-defense.
DiGiacomo, who also is prosecuting Duane Davis in the Shakur killing, said after court that he had no comment. A spokesperson for Arnold's office also declined to comment.
Arnold said in court Wednesday that his client did not receive a fair trial in the battery case because of the juror's apparent comments. The juror himself denied it multiple times while on the witness stand.
Wednesday's hearing was not the first time that the credibility of those with ties to Davis has been questioned in court.
Davis, the only person ever charged in Shakur's death, had sought to be freed from custody shortly after his arrest in September 2023. But a judge rejected his request, saying she suspected a cover-up of the true source of funds for his bond.
A music record executive offering to underwrite Davis' $750,000 bail at the time testified that he obtained the money legally and wanted to help Davis because he's 'always been a monumental person in our community."
But the judge said she was skeptical after receiving two identical letters apparently from an entertainment company that Cash 'Wack 100' Jones says wired him the funds as payment for his work. One letter was signed with a name that had no ties to the company, the judge said, while the other included a misspelled name and a return address tied to a doctor's office.
Davis has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. He's accused of orchestrating the fatal drive-by shooting of Shakur nearly 30 years ago at a traffic light near the Las Vegas Strip.
Prosecutors say the evidence against Davis is strong, including his own accounts of the shooting throughout the years in interviews and a 2019 tell-all memoir. His trial is scheduled for February.
Shakur's death at 25 came as his fourth solo album, 'All Eyez on Me,' remained on the charts, with some 5 million copies sold. Nominated six times for a Grammy Award, Shakur is still largely considered one of the most influential and versatile rappers of all time.

Why does Emma Stone look so different? As fans go wild for Oscar-winner's 'new face reveal', top cosmetic doctor gives his verdict

A cosmetic doctor has shared his theory that Hollywood actress Emma Stone has had a 'very well executed' face lift. The 36-year-old actress sparked chatter amongst fans after attending the Los Angeles premiere of her new film Eddington late last month. Pictures from the event, which took place on June 26, showed the Oscar-winning actress looking slightly different to how people know her—with many comments claiming that it looked like her upper face was 'tighter'. While this may be due to her skincare routine and clever makeup, amongst those convinced that the star has undergone some sort of tweakment is Dr Jonny Betteridge. The London-based aesthetics doctor and founder of the clinic JB Aesthetics believes she has had surgery on her upper eyes, and a face lift procedure. In a video posted on TikTok, which has already clocked up more than 61,400 views, he asks: 'Did you notice Emma Stone looking a bit different? 'At 36, and at the recent Eddington film premiere, her face looked noticeably more defined and facelifted. 'Her brows sit higher, especially the tails, the eyelids are more visible, and her eyes have an almond like shape. 'Looking from her four years ago, these changes could be consistent with an upper blepharoplasty and an endoscopic temporal brow lift and mid face lift.' The doctor explained: '(They) lift and tighten the mid to upper face, like the cheeks, temples, and brows, using small incisions and a tiny camera called an endoscope.' Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure where excess skin is removed from the eyelids, either reducing overhang from the eyebrows, or removing fatty deposits and tightening 'bags' from under the eyes. In an upper blepharoplasty, which is what Dr Betteridge has theorised Ms Stone has had, excess skin is cut from the eyelids in order to make the eyes appear larger and more 'awake'. For more dramatic results, it is often performed along with a brow lift, where tiny incisions are made in the hairline and the muscles of the upper face are pulled upwards, reducing age-related sagging. He added that these are 'minimally invasive procedures' that are 'typically done on people in their 30s to 40s who are showing mild to moderate signs of facial aging.' The other procedure that Dr Betteridge alleges Ms Stone has undergone is a mid face lift. With the procedure, he added: 'Incisions are well hidden in the hairline, temporal area, or inside the mouth, which helps to reduce visible scarring.' Fans have noted that the actress' face looks more lifted in June 2025 (left) compared to October last year (left) He said her face on the red carpet 'closely resembles' examples of those who had the procedure as seen in a 2024 article in the journal Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. 'These patients show similar anatomical shifts, lifted brows and mid face, and an almond-like appearance to their eyes. And these are common results of an endoscopic face lift,' he said. But he added: 'Whatever may have been done, it appears to be tasteful, elegant and very well executed.' In the UK, the cost of an upper blepharoplasty ranges between £2,000 to £6,000, and a mid face lift around £6,000 to £12,000. After the video was posted, over a hundred social media users commented on the Hollywood actress' evolved appearance. In the comment section, one user said: 'Love this look on her'. Another said: 'She looks absolutely beautiful, whoever says otherwise is jealous. A third commented: 'I think she looks gorgeous then and now'. However, others were not as convinced, suggesting other things could be behind her fresh look. One user commented: 'Am I the only person who thinks this is all just down to brow shape and makeup?' While the aesthetics doctor has speculated that the Hollywood actress has had the cosmetic procedure, she has not confirmed if this is true. Facial tightening is also possible with dermatologist-grade facials which use radio frequency devices, LED lights and ultrasound waves to boost collagen, brighten, tighten and plump the skin. The appearance of a lifted eye can also be created by using cosmetic stickers which are applied in the crease of the eyelid, or hidden in the hairline to make skin appear more taught. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dr Jonny Betteridge (@ Ms Stone has never spoken about having any sort of tweakment, but she is passionate about good skincare. She previously told Cosmopolitan that she has very dry and sensitive skin, so she is incredibly picky about what products she uses. 'I'm really allergic to a lot of stuff, so I can only use products with a single ingredient in it,' she said. 'I use a cleanser and sometimes I exfoliate with baking soda or brown sugar. I like experimenting. I love coconut oil, and olive oil—I have a big bottle of it on my sink and I put it all over my face and smell like it's sexy.' She also revealed that she's a fan of eye-makeup, which, if applied correctly, has the potential to change the appearance of the upper face, sometimes quite drastically. Ms Stone continued: 'I've learned to fill in my eyebrows—I use an eyeshadow and a little brush to do them, which I enjoy...I wear mascara most days, but I do put on a little makeup every day because it helps me feel put together. But yeah, mascara is essential.' There is every possibility that Ms Stone hasn't gone under the knife at all, and has just spent a good few hours in the makeup chair. For last year's Oscars ceremony, Ms Stone's glam squad revealed that they used $2,000-worth of hair and beauty products to create her ethereal, mermaid-like look.

Legendary competitive eater hungry to reclaim hot dog crown

The annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest is scheduled for Friday at Coney Island, New York, following a weigh-in event held on Thursday. Joey Chestnut, a 16-time champion and world record holder for eating 76 hot dogs, is set to return to the men's competition after missing last year due to a sponsorship deal with a rival company, Impossible Foods. Patrick Bertoletti, who secured the men's title in Chestnut's absence last year, expressed anticipation for the competition, while Miki Sudo aims to defend her dominant position in the women's division. This year's contest will notably feature a mother and daughter, Katie and Isabeau Prettyman, competing against each other, with 18-year-old Isabeau being the youngest ever participant. Competitors are given 10 minutes to consume as many hot dogs and buns as possible, with no condiments permitted, and the event will be broadcast on ESPN channels for those unable to attend in person.

How the late Sophia Hutchins' 'loving' bond with Caitlyn Jenner, 75, helped keep the peace between the Olympian and ex-wife Kris Jenner - as star dies aged 29 in horror ATV accident

Caitlyn Jenner will be left heartbroken following the death of her best friend and manager Sophia Hutchins. On Friday, it was revealed businesswoman Sophia, 29, had tragically died in a quad bike accident after plunging 350ft down a cliff when the ATV was struck by a car. It is not yet known if Caitlyn witnessed the crash or was at home at the time of the tragedy on Wednesday. She has yet to make a statement about the loss and will be mourning the end of their 'loving bond', which also helped her mend rifts with her ex-wife Kris Jenner, 69. Following Kris and Caitlyn's divorce, the pair famously fell out in 2017 when newly-transitioned Caitlyn came out with her memoir, The Secrets Of My Life, which included a warts-and-all depiction of Kris and their marriage. Yet Sophia - who was inspired to come out as transgender after hearing Caitlyn's story - proved to be the glue that helped keep them civil, having a good relationship with both parties. Sophia moved into Caitlyn's $3.5million Malibu mansion and began working as the star's manager in 2017, taking over the role from Kris. She became the Olympian's confidante, with eyebrows raised over their close bond and their many cosy outings. Their relationship was well documented on the reality series, I Am Cait, a spin-off of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Yet despite living under one roof, Sophia insisted they 'were never romantically involved', telling The New York Times it was all about work and friendship. 'Caitlyn is a parent to me. I have said that a million times. It is a parental, familial relationship,' Sophia said. Yet in 2019, she gushed over their 'loving' bond, after Caitlyn organised her 23rd birthday party. In an Instagram post, she praised their 'amazing loving partner' and described herself as 'so lucky'. Alongside a gallery of snaps that heavily featured Caitlyn, she penned: 'I have chosen to be very intentional about the people I surround myself with. 'Surround yourself with those that inspire, those that are beautiful, those that are genuine, those that empower you, and those that choose love. 'I am so lucky to have the friends, team, and all of the love and support I have. I cannot wait to share this year with all of these people and so many more that wouldn't fit in this collage! Thanks for making my bday so special!' Back in 2018, Sophia also fueled the flames by referring to Caitlyn as her 'partner' and even admitted that they were 'inseparable'. 'I wouldn't describe it as romantic. I would describe it as we're partners, business partners – I'm the executive director of her foundation,' Hutchins dished on an episode of The Hidden Truth Show podcast. 'We have so much in common and see the world so similarly, and are both such a good match for each other because we challenge each other. We're partners in everything we do, we're inseparable, we're business partners, we live together, we share a dog, we share family, we share a life together,' Sophia said. Sophia also had a strong bond with Kris and the daughters she shared with Caitlyn - Kendall and Kylie. The siblings once gave Sophia a stunning heart-shaped diamond necklace for Christmas. Sophia also posed for an online ad campaign for Kim Kardashian's highly successful clothing line, SKIMS. 'I'm on good terms with all the family, but I'm closest with Kris, Kim, Kylie and Kendall', Sophia said. Sophia and Caitlyn's last public appearance together was in 2024 when Sophia accompanied her to the April 2024 White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington, D.C. Like the athlete, Sophia was a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement.
