Members of banned Jamaat-e-Islami launch new political party in J&K

The Hindu27-04-2025

Several prominent members of the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) on Sunday (April 27, 2025) floated a new political party, Justice and Development Front (JDF), Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), and pledged to participate in all upcoming elections in J&K.
'The party's founding principles are justice, development and public welfare. We intend to take an active role in addressing people's issues. The party will fill the gap between governance and the grassroots, focusing on issues such as education, healthcare, youth employment, and community empowerment,' Sayar Reshi, a former member of the banned JeI, said.
Mr. Reshi, who will function as the party's general secretary, contested the 2024 Assembly elections from Kulgam constituency.
The JDF, launched at an office in Nowgam, announced Shameem Ahmad Thokar as the party president. Abdul Rehman Shalla, who fought the 2024 assembly elections from Baramulla, has been appointed vice-chairman of the party.
'People supported us (during the elections). We decided to go back to the grassroots level and grow stronger. We will participate in all upcoming elections. People had a sense that their real representatives are not on the ground. We joined the political arena to fill the void,' Mr. Reshi said.
Condemning the Pahalgam attack, Mr. Thokar said, 'No words are enough to condemn the dastardly attack. However, I appeal to the Government of India and the Lieutenant Governor to stop the process of blasting and destruction of houses. It has frightened the families living there.'
Social justice, fundamental rights
The JDF leaders highlighted that the newly-floated party will work towards a future that ensures social justice, economic progress, and protection of fundamental rights for all citizens. 'The JDF is the launch of a new hope for the people of J&K,' they said.
Former JeI general secretary Ghulam Qadir Lone was also present at the launch function. Senior JeI leader Ghulam Qadir Wani from Pulwama's Gussu was the first prominent leader to head a JeI panel advocating the decision to contest elections in J&K.
Members of the banned JeI contested the 2024 assembly elections from multiple seats in north, south and central Kashmir. However, they failed to win any seat. The decision of a faction of the JeI has split the socio-religious group into two factions.
The Union Home Ministry banned the Jamaat-e-Islami in 2019 for being an 'illegal association' under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for a period of five years. In February 2024, the ban was extended till 2029.

Pakistan COAS Asim Munir Invited To US Army Day Celebrations On June 14: Sources

Last Updated: During this visit, the US is likely to urge Pakistan to take action against terrorist groups targeting Afghanistan and India Pakistan's chief of army staff General Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah is scheduled to visit Washington DC, for the US Army Day celebrations on June 14, top intelligence sources have told CNN-News18. He will join other military leaders to commemorate the US Army's 250th anniversary. According to sources at the Pakistani Embassy in Washington DC, Munir is expected to arrive on June 12. During this visit, the US is likely to urge Pakistan to take action against terrorist groups targeting Afghanistan and India. The invitation appears to be linked more to the ongoing US-China rivalry and Pakistan's strategic importance than any stance against India. Due to Pakistan's close ties with China through initiatives like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the US harbours concerns about Pakistan's neutrality. Given the current geopolitical climate, the US is unlikely to view Pakistan as a credible or neutral mediator, said sources. This visit has also provoked political reactions within Pakistan, with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) planning protests against Munir's visit and labelling him a criminal. Pakistan is expected to seek assurances from the US regarding the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) operating from Afghanistan. Historically, Pakistan has sought US mediation on various issues, while India firmly rejects third-party involvement. The US prefers bilateral dialogue and is unlikely to alter its stance in favour of mediation, sources said. Pakistan recognises the potential debt trap associated with China and is eager to attract investment from other global powers. The country possesses valuable resources such as lithium, copper, gold, and rare earth minerals, for which it urgently requires investment. However, Pakistan is wary of potential colonisation similar to China's approach. The visit aims to manage the strained security relationship between the US and Pakistan. Pakistan will likely pursue its agenda on mediation in Kashmir and seek investments in its mineral resources. However, tangible outcomes may be limited, as India is unlikely to accede to any external demands regarding Kashmir. First Published: June 11, 2025, 02:37 IST

LDF & UDF trade barbs over support

Kozhikode: Welfare Party's support for UDF and PDP's backing of LDF have triggered a sharp political clash between rival fronts in Nilambur as they compete for electoral gains. Welfare Party is the political wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI), while People's Democratic Party (PDP) is led by Abdul Nazar Madani, an accused in the 1998 Bengaluru serial blasts case. JEI and PDP announced their support for UDF and LDF respectively on Monday. CPM state secretary MV Govindan termed JEI a communal organization with global ties and an agenda to create an Islamic theocratic state. He slammed UDF for accepting JEI's support but defended the LDF's acceptance of PDP's backing, claiming PDP had suffered mistreatment in Kerala. Govindan slammed UDF for aligning with JEI, calling it 'a coalition of communal elements'. "They've followed this pattern in several elections, including Palakkad bypoll. UDF has become an alliance of communal forces and will face the consequences," he added. When asked about LDF accepting PDP's support, Govindan said PDP does not aim to establish a theocratic state. CPM leader Elamaram Kareem also attacked UDF, saying JEI promotes an ideology that supports terrorism. "How can the Congress claim to be secular while joining hands with them?" he asked. Opposition leader VD Satheesan accused CPM of double standards, saying it had previously held talks with JEI and accepted its support in past elections. "How is it okay for LDF to get support from Jamaat-e-Islami but not UDF? Those who criticize Welfare Party's support for UDF stay silent when PDP backs LDF. People will see through CPM's double standards—they once called JEI's support 'hopeful and exciting'. So why is Congress being targeted for accepting it now?" he asked. Satheesan also reminded Govindan of chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan's earlier comments about JEI, in which he described it as "one of the Muslim organizations with a clear political stand on national and international issues." Satheesan said that in all six elections he contested, JEI and Welfare Party had backed the LDF candidate. He added that after 2019, they shifted to support the Congress at the national level to fight communalism. "When they supported CPM, they were called secularists. Now that they support UDF, they're branded communalists? This is typical CPM hypocrisy," he said. BJP leader K Surendran accused UDF and LDF of seeking support from religious extremist and terror-linked groups just to win elections, warning that such alliances would harm society.

Federal immigration raid at Omaha food production plant sparks protests

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Immigration authorities raided at least one Omaha food production plant Tuesday morning, inspiring some small protests, but details about how many workers were affected weren't immediately clear. Omaha police and the Douglas County sheriff said immigration officials had warned them about their plans, and their departments helped block off traffic around the neighborhood where many food production plants are located while U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers worked. ICE officials didn't immediately respond to questions. Meatpacking plants rely heavily on immigrant workers who are willing to do the physically demanding work. The industry has not yet been the focus of President Donald Trump's immigration enforcement efforts, but the administration has been intensifying its efforts in recent weeks. Trump called out the National Guard this week to respond to ongoing protests in Los Angeles over his immigration policies. In Omaha, a small group of people came out to protest the raids, and some of them even jumped on the front bumper of a vehicle to try to stop officers. Glenn Valley Foods officials didn't immediately respond to an inquiry from The Associated Press, but WOWT reported that CEO and owner Gary Rohwer said he wasn't made aware of the operation ahead of time and that there was no warrant. 'Of course not. It's a raid,' said Rohwer, whose company makes the Gary's QuickSteak brand of ready-to-grill steak. Federal agents entered the plant around 9 a.m. Tuesday with a list of 97 people they wanted to screen, Rohwer said. He said the company regularly checks the immigration status of employees with the federal E-Verify database. The raids prompted one Douglas County Commissioner to walk out in the middle of a meeting Tuesday to head down to the area he represents in southeast Omaha where the plants are located. Commissioner Roger Garcia and City Councilman Ron Hug both expressed concern about the impact of the raids on families. 'These actions are deeply harmful to the South Omaha community,' Hug said in a statement. 'Not only are they unjust and disruptive, but they also directly undermine the economic stability and growth of District 4 and the broader community.' Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hanson said his agency is 'not privy to the exact nature of the ICE operation' but that his agency is there to assist with assuring 'peace and safety' of everyone in the area. Asked when he learned of the operation, he said his department received 'respectful and ample notification.' He says he got the notification about a week ago.
