Abandoned 34,500-seater football stadium that had been tipped to host Euro 2028 matches in new boost after £50m funding

AN ABANDONED 34,500-seater football stadium that had been tipped to host Euro 2028 matches has received a new boost after landing £50million in funding. Belfast's Casement Park was initially selected as a host stadium for the upcoming tournament. 4 4 It saw Northern Ireland join England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland as a host nation. Plans were afoot to rebuild the ground to a 34,000 capacity in time for the competition. But Northern Ireland was axed as one of the host nations due to funding issues over Casement Park. The national team currently plays at Windsor Park, which holds 18,000 fans. However, Uefa requires all grounds for major tournaments to hold at least 30,000 spectators. And failure to find the funding for Casement Park ended Northern Ireland's hopes of hosting Euro 2028 games. But now, the overgrown arena has been given a major boost after receiving £50m towards a £260m rebuild. That money has come from the government, according to the BBC. And it has finally been confirmed that the funds will not have to be repaid, with the £50m being provided as an 'equity stake' and not a loan. Despite the cash boost, the redevelopment of Casement Park is still not fully financed. Jarlath Burns warns 'time is money' over Casement Park stadium project 4 4 £260m is required for a full rebuild, but the Gaelic Athletic Association can only find £120m on top of the government's £50m – leaving a £90m shortfall in total. Casement Park used to be a top stadium for hurling and Gaelic football matches. Tens of thousands of fans used to cram in for matches. But the venue shut down in 2013 and has since been left abandoned. Now, the derelict site has received planning permission to be modernised and early demolition work has begun.

Prince William makes solo Royal Ascot outing after Kate pulls out last minute

Prince William has arrived at the Royal Ascot alone after Princess Kate pulled out of the event at the last minute. With one hour to spare before the second day of Royal Ascot began, it was revealed Kate would not be attending as she continues to find the right balance following her treatment for cancer. William arrived in the first royal carriage alongside King Charles, Queen Camilla and Prince Saud bin Khalid Al-Saud. The Prince of Wales had been down to travel in the second carriage alongside Kate, but was bumped up to his father's carriage when it emerged Kate would not be there. Despite his wife not being by his side, William is still attending the second day of the five-day meet in Berkshire, as he will award the winner of the Prince of Wales race with their trophy. In keeping with the strict formal dress code, William donned a traditional morning suit. Charles and Camilla were also dressed in their racing best, with Camilla opting for a rare pop of colour in monochromatic green outfit. Racegoers had been hoping to see Kate as Prince William is named as one of the figures awarding race prizes during the second day of the meet. Her name had also been included in the official programme as taking part in today's carriage procession in the second carriage alongside William. But just minutes after the carriage list had been released, Kensington Palace confirmed she would not be there. It is understood she is trying to find the right balance as she fully returns to public-facing engagements. A royal source reiterated that Kensington Palace has consistently stressed the need for 'flexibility' around the Princess of Wales' public engagements. The source added that the princess completed three engagements in the last week, attending the new V&A East Storeroom exhibition space in London, the King's official birthday celebrations at Trooping the Colour on Saturday and Garter Day on Monday in Windsor. The princess was said to be disappointed at not attending the famous social and sporting occasion in Berkshire with her husband and the King and Queen. This is the second year in a row Kate has not attended the annual social event as during last year's Royal Ascot, she was in the middle of her cancer treatment. While Kate announced in January that her cancer was now in remission and she is focussed on healing, today's statement confirmed that she is still trying to find the right balance between her royal duties and the effects of her health battle. Kate and William have already been spotted at two major royal events this week: Trooping the Colour on Saturday to celebrate the King's birthday, and Garter Day on Monday. Fin Smith and Mitchell team up for the Lions

LONDON, June 18 - England and Northampton halfback duo Fin Smith and Alex Mitchell will take their partnership to the next level after being named as starters for the British and Irish Lions in their warm-up fixture against Argentina in Dublin on Friday. Fellow Northampton man Tommy Freeman is on the right wing, with Duhan van der Merwe on the left in the team named by coach Andy Farrell on Wednesday. Scotland's Sione Tuipulotu, edging his way back to fitness after an injury-ravaged year, teams up in midfield with Bundee Aki. Jac Morgan starts at open side flanker with the only other Welshman in the 38-man squad, scrumhalf Tomos Williams, on the bench. Ben Earl and Tom Curry complete the back row, with 20-year-old Henry Pollock on the bench. Saracens and England lock Maro Itoje will captain the side for the first time as he prepares for his third tour. In total 14 players could make their Lions debut against the Pumas. While two-times tourists Aki, Tadhg Beirne, Curry, Marcus Smith and Van der Merwe all featured in South Africa in 2021. The Lions can also call on the experience of three-times tourists Elliot Daly and Tadhg Furlong off the bench. "Congratulations to Maro Itoje ahead of leading out the Lions for the first time - it is a truly special moment and one that very few players ever get to experience," Farrell said in a statement. "Maro has led the group well during our time in Portugal and then Dublin this week. This is also our first opportunity to show what the 2025 Lions are about and what we want to stand for as a team. "We know that Argentina will challenge us up front and out wide - so Friday night will be a tough contest, but also a great occasion for all the fans." The match is a non-capped international and around half the Lions touring squad were involved in the URC and English Premiership finals last Saturday, limiting Farrell's options.
