Scientists Smash Nuclear Fusion Record, Igniting Hope For Limitless Clean Energy

Scientists in Germany have taken a giant leap towards producing near-limitless, clean energy using nuclear fusion -- the same fiery reaction that takes place in the core of the Sun. Using the Wendelstein 7-X nuclear fusion reactor, the researchers managed to sustain the fusion experiment for an impressive 43 seconds, smashing the previous records, according to a report in LiveScience.
Developing nuclear fusion for energy requirements has long been a goal of scientists but reaching temperatures over 100 million degrees Celsius and sustaining its long-term operation has always proved a challenge. Moreover, current reactor concepts consume more energy than they are able to produce.
However, using the machine with extremely low-density and electrically charged hydrogen gas as fuel, scientists managed to achieve the breakthrough. Wendelstein 7-X, officially called a 'stellarator', is a type of fusion device that confines hot, charged gas, known as plasma, with powerful external magnets controlling it.
On May 22, plasma inside Wendelstein 7-X was raised to over 20 million Celsius, reaching a peak of 30 million Celsius. It also reached a new record high triple product, a key metric for the success of fusion power generators. The triple product is a combination of the density of particles in the plasma, the temperature required for these particles to fuse, and the energy confinement time.
"The new record is a tremendous achievement by the international team. Elevating the triple product to tokamak levels during long plasma pulses marks another important milestone on the way toward a power-plant-capable stellarator," said Thomas Klinger, Head of Operations at Wendelstein 7-X.
Notably, the highest values for the triple product were achieved by the Japanese Tokamak JT60U (decommissioned in 2008) and the European Tokamak facility JET in Great Britain (decommissioned in 2023).
Holy grail
Scientists regard nuclear fusion as the holy grail of energy. It is what powers our Sun as atomic nuclei are merged to create massive amounts of energy, which is the opposite of the fission process used in atomic weapons and nuclear power plants, where the heavy atom is split into multiple smaller ones.
Last year, the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) fusion energy reactor, dubbed China's 'artificial sun', sustained plasma for a whopping 1,000 seconds, breaking the 403-second record it set in 2023.
Unlike fission, fusion emits no greenhouse gases and carries less risk of accidents or the theft of atomic material. By mimicking the natural reaction of the sun, scientists are hoping that the technology may help harness near-unlimited amounts of energy and help battle the energy crisis, as well as power humanity's exploration beyond the solar system

The surrounding land in the photo looks parched, most likely due to drought conditions. The hill itself has a pinkish hue on its slopes, which enhances its mouth-like appearance. However, in more recent satellite images of the location, both the hill and its surroundings appear much greener and are covered with significantly more vegetation. This change may suggest seasonal variation or recovery from drought, further emphasizing how dynamic the region's landscape can be. Geologists say, the unusual landscape may be ancient Dikes According to reports, Josh Roering, a geomorphologist at the University of Oregon, says that the unusual formation resembles a dike. He explained, 'It looks like there's a dike or narrow unit of resistant rock running through the middle of that ridgeline that erodes more slowly than the surrounding rock and thus sticks out.' Dikes are geological features that cut across larger horizontal sheets of rock, according to the European Geosciences Union. They are most commonly formed via volcanic activity or tectonic plate movements. In some cases, they can also form as a result of sedimentary processes. These formations tend to be more resistant to erosion than the surrounding rock, which is why they often appear as elevated ridges on the landscape. However, it is unclear what type of dike this hill's central line may be. Similar structures can be found in the other parts of the world, such as the New Mexico desert and the Mackenzie dike swarm in Yukon, Canada. These global comparisons could offer clues to the origin of Sudan's 'Landlocked Lips,' but for now, the mysterious hill remains an intriguing natural feature awaiting further study. A gas giant planet, roughly the size of Saturn, has been found orbiting an unusually small red dwarf star. This rare pairing defies current models, which say small stars don't have enough material in their surrounding disks to form such large planets. Named TOI-6894b, the planet was found about 241 light-years from Earth in the constellation Leo. TOI-6894b is about 1.07 times the diameter of Saturn but has just over half its mass. This makes the planet very low in density, similar to that of a beach ball. Despite its large size, the planet orbits extremely close to its host star, completing a full revolution in just under three Earth days. In terms of physical size, the star is just 2.5 times wider than the planet itself, a remarkable size ratio rarely seen in planetary systems. The formation of such a large planet around such a small star has puzzled astronomers. According to the well-accepted 'core accretion' model, large planets are thought to grow from small rocky cores that gradually gather gas from the star's surrounding protoplanetary disk. But small, dim stars like red dwarfs are believed to have disks too thin and short-lived to form massive planets before the gas disappears. Dr. Teruyuki Hirano, the lead researcher from the Graduate University for Advanced Studies in Japan, noted that this planetary system 'is completely inconsistent with what we thought we knew.' He said the discovery 'forces us to question our assumptions about planet formation.' The planet was first flagged by NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which detects periodic dips in starlight caused by planets passing in front of their stars. Follow-up observations using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT) confirmed the planet's mass and orbit. Future observations by the James Webb Space Telescope could reveal more about its atmosphere and structure, including how much of it is made up of hydrogen and helium and whether it has a large core. Red dwarfs are the most common type of star in the Milky Way, making up about 75% of the stellar population. They're also seen as good candidates for hosting habitable planets due to their long lifespans. Discoveries like TOI-6894b suggest there's still much to learn about the diversity of planetary systems these stars may this is not the first time a massive planet has been found orbiting a small star, it is one of the most extreme examples yet.
