Why Digital and Delivery Speed Could Be Walmart's Secret Weapon

In the race to get products to customers' doorsteps, Walmart Inc. 's WMT strategy is clear — delivering faster and reaching more households than ever. The company is closing in on a milestone where 95% of the U.S. population will have access to delivery in three hours or less. This capability is scaling quickly, with the number of deliveries in less than three hours zooming 91% in the first quarter of fiscal 2026 for Walmart US. Walmart's store-fulfilled model allows orders to be picked, packed and shipped from locations near customers. This helps cut transportation costs and delivery times, while premium fees for expedited service enhance last-mile economics. The combination has helped Walmart achieve e-commerce profitability for the first time across both its U.S. and global operations. International markets are also contributing to this push. In China and India, delivery times are being measured in minutes, reinforcing Walmart's competitive position in densely populated, high-growth regions. Internationally, 45% of same or next-day deliveries now arrive in under three hours, underscoring the scalability of the approach. This speed advantage not only drives sales but also strengthens Walmart's broader omnichannel ecosystem, where physical stores and digital channels work in sync. The ability to rapidly fulfill orders is enhancing customer loyalty, boosting digital adoption, and fortifying Walmart's role as both a convenience leader and an everyday low-price retailer. Walmart's worldwide e-commerce sales grew 22% in the last reported quarter. How WMT's Digital Growth Stacks Up Against Costco and Target Costco Wholesale Corporation COST continues to show digital momentum, with e-commerce comparable sales rising 14.8% in the third quarter of fiscal 2025 and 15.1% in July. Costco is boosting its digital reach through efforts like Costco Logistics and a new Buy Now Pay Later option. Costco Logistics saw a 31% year-over-year increase in big and bulky e-commerce deliveries in the last reported quarter. Target Corporation TGT is making significant strides in digital sales and delivery speed, positioning itself as a strong competitor in the fast-delivery race. Target's digital sales rose 4.7% year over year in the first quarter of fiscal 2025, fueled by the rapid growth of Target Circle 360, which offers same-day delivery with no price markups. With more than 70% of digital orders fulfilled within a day, Target is enhancing convenience and customer loyalty through faster delivery. There's a potential Air Canada strike looming. Here's what you need to know

A potential strike looms as contract talks carry on between Air Canada and the union representing 10,000 of its flight attendants. The outcome of negotiations this week could be critical for summer travellers worried about their upcoming flights. Here's what you need to know ahead of taking off. Will there be a strike? It's too early to say. The Air Canada component of the Canadian Union of Public Employees received a strong strike mandate from its membership after a vote that closed last week, with 99.7 per cent in favour. But, that doesn't mean a strike will happen. The airline downplayed the mandate, calling it a "normal step in the negotiation process" — essentially a tool that gives the union more leverage in contract talks. The union has also said it's optimistic it can avoid a disruption. The two sides returned to the bargaining table on Friday in the hopes of solving the impasse. When would a strike take place? The earliest that flight attendants could potentially walk off the job is Saturday at 12:01 a.m. ET. That deadline comes after a mandatory 21-day "cooling off" period officially expires. The strike mandate is effective for 60 days. When will we know if there is a strike? The union must provide 72-hours notice if it intends to strike. That means it could give notice of a work stoppage by Wednesday at 12:01 a.m. ET if they intend to go on strike on Saturday. Air Canada says it will keep passengers updated on potential disruptions via email and text message. Would all flights be cancelled? Air Canada has said it is "premature to speculate or discuss possible contingencies" in case of a strike. If a strike does occur, it would affect Air Canada's main operations and Air Canada Rouge. Flight attendants working for Jazz and PAL, which operate Air Canada Express flights, are not part of the negotiations. WATCH | Summer travellers worry about how a strike might impact their plans: Potential Air Canada flight attendant strike has some rethinking travel plans 3 days ago Summer travellers are anxiously watching as Air Canada and the union representing thousands of flight attendants return to the bargaining table. Flight attendants could walk off the job as early as Aug. 16 if a new agreement isn't reached. How will I find out either way? Air Canada has said to stay tuned for updates this week. While flights are operating as scheduled so far, it says online that should this change, it will notify customers via email and text message in advance of their travel. For passengers whose itineraries change mid-journey, Air Canada says it will "actively explore all options to keep you travelling, including rebooking with other airlines on your behalf." "If you haven't received an email or text message notification, it's because your itinerary is not impacted," it says. "If you booked your own travel and you want to make sure you didn't miss a notification, take the time to check your junk email folder and your mobile provider's message settings."

Paramount gets UFC streaming rights in U.S. with $7.7B deal

Social Sharing Skydance-owned Paramount will become the exclusive U.S. home of Ultimate Fighting Championship under a seven-year streaming deal valued at about $7.7 billion US, the first major strategic move by the newly merged media giant under new CEO David Ellison. Starting next year, Paramount+ will carry the complete U.S. slate of 13 numbered UFC events and 30 Fight Nights. UFC, owned by TKO Group Holdings, will also have select numbered cards simulcast on Paramount's CBS broadcast network, the companies announced on Monday. The deal builds on Ellison's commitment to increase investment in high-quality exclusive content, which he had called the "single biggest driver of subscriber growth." Sports content, especially rights to live events, has become the cornerstone of media strategy as cord-cutting accelerates, with rivals such as Netflix and Disney also striking similar deals to strengthen their offerings. Netflix secured a $5-billion, 10-year global deal for WWE Raw from 2025 and added two NFL Christmas Day games. Disney's ESPN extended rights with the NFL, NHL, MLB and College Football Playoff. "The addition of UFC's year-round must-watch events to our platforms is a major win," Ellison said, calling UFC a "global sports powerhouse." The company will pay an average of $1.1 billion a year and include events at no extra cost to subscribers, shifting away from UFC's traditional pay-per-view model. It also said it may seek UFC rights in other markets as they come up for bidding. While Canadians can subscribe to Paramount+, it's unclear whether they'll be able to watch UFC fights on that platform. Sportsnet has held exclusive rights to UFC live events in Canada since 2024. CBC News has reached out to Rogers, which owns Sportsnet, for comment. UFC stages about 40 live events a year, reaching roughly 100 million U.S. fans and nearly 950 million households globally. Its slate includes marquee numbered card events like UFC 300, weekly Fight Nights and reality shows like The Ultimate Fighter and Dana White's Contender Series.
