England tour beckons, but GT's Sai Sudharsan's focus is on IPL 2025 playoffs

India Today23-05-2025

Gujarat Titans opener Sai Sudharsan is excited about the prospect of representing India A on the upcoming England tour but remains fully focused on the immediate challenge - guiding his side through the IPL 2025 playoffs.India A will play two first-class matches against the England Lions at Canterbury and Northampton on May 30 and June 6 before concluding their outing with an intra-squad match against Team India on June 13 at Beckenham. Batters Shubman Gill and Sudharsan are likely to join the squad after the IPL final concludes on June 3.advertisementCurrently leading the Orange Cap race with 638 runs in 13 matches, the Tamil Nadu left-hander has been one of the standout young batters in this IPL season. Since making an impression with a century on his first-class debut in 2022, Sudharsan has steadily developed into a reliable opener, earning recognition from selectors and fans alike.

As an opener in first-class cricket, he boasts a commendable record of 1,397 runs in 33 innings at an average of 42.33, including four centuries."I know I'll be heading to the India A tour, but right now, my focus has to be fully on the IPL. Once this chapter is done, then I can shift my attention to the India A opportunity, which I'm really excited about. I'm confident it will be a great experience," Sudharsan said after Gujarat Titans' match against Lucknow Super Giants.advertisementFor only the second time this year, GT's top three all fell for under 50 in the same match. After Avesh dismissed Gill with a sharp catch from Abdul Samad, Akash bowled a superb cutter to break Buttler's defense, leaving GT at 97/3 halfway through. The middle order, led by Shahrukh Khan and Sherfane Rutherford, briefly revived the innings with aggressive hitting. They punished bowlers like Avesh and Shahbaz Ahmed, smashing boundaries and sixes to keep GT in the chase.Rutherford (38) and Shahrukh (56), both powerful hitters, kept Gujarat in the game until the 17th over, before William O'Rourke and Avesh Khan stepped up to secure a 33-run victory for LSG.Sudharsan brushed aside any concerns regarding GT's middle order, saying that both Sherfane Rutherford and Shahrukh Khan have shown with the bat that they can finish games for the Titans."I think the IPL is that kind of league where you can't experiment, even if you qualify early in the tournament. So, I don't think you can try a lot of different things in the middle order. But I feel the middle order has done pretty well because even in the first 6-7 games, Sherfane stepped up and scored many runs in the middle order, changing games for us. Even in Mumbai, he changed the course of the game. So, I think even Shahrukh got an opportunity today to showcase his talent. I feel the middle order is on course as well. I don't think there is any gap or issue in the middle order. I feel things went well for all three batters at the top, so they didn't get many opportunities to play in the first half of the tournament," Sai said when asked about GT's middle order.Must Watch

Bengaluru Tragedy: Why India Keeps Suffering Stampedes

The writer served as DG of Uttarakhand police and is VC, Sports University of Haryana. The descent of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL celebration into tragedy last week, has once again underscored the perils of inadequate crowd management, a long-standing issue in a densely populated country like India. What should have been a moment of pride and festivity quickly descended into chaos, revealing critical gaps in planning, foresight, and execution. Khaleel Ahmed's fiery spell dismantles England Lions, puts India A on top in second unofficial Test

Khaleel Ahmed. New Delhi: Khaleel Ahmed's impressive four-wicket haul has given India A a significant advantage over the England Lions in the second unofficial Test at Northampton. Chennai Super Kings' bowlers dominated the day's play, starting with Khaleel Ahmed's impressive four-wicket haul, including the key dismissals of Jordan Cox, James Rew, and George Hill. Tushar Deshpande contributed two wickets, and Tanush Kotian, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Anshul Kamboj each claimed a wicket, helping restrict the opposition to 192/3. It was KL Rahul's century and a fine fifty by Dhruv Jurel that helped India A score 348. Although Rahul sat out the first warm-up match, he soon handled the conditions well in England, while Jurel kept scoring with another half-century. The Indian squad had a practice session at Lord's Cricket Ground. With head coach Gautam Gambhir and the new strength and conditioning coach Adrian Le Roux, the team was able to use the indoor areas. Although Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah worked out by playing football and throwing to batsmen in bowling drills, the others concentrated on serious cricket exercises. That session was the team's first time practicing in London since their arrival.

'Didn't care if South Africa won or lost': Heinrich Klaasen breaks silence on shock international retirement

South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen shocked the world last week when he announced his sudden retirement from international cricket. Klaasen, 33, played 4 Tests, 60 ODIs and 58 T20Is for the Proteas, scoring more than 3,000 runs across all three formats of the game. Klaasen has finally broken his silence regarding his decision to call it quits, saying for a long time, he didn't care if 'South Africa won or lost'. Klaasen also stated that he had the intention of continuing until the 2027 ODI World Cup, but the exit of head coach Rob Walter as the white-ball coach and his omission from the central contracts list forced him to bid adieu to international cricket. 'I felt for a long time that I didn't really care about any of my performances and whether the team won or not. That's the wrong place to be. I had a long conversation with Rob before the Champions Trophy, and I told him I didn't feel good in my heart about what was going on. I wasn't enjoying it that much,' Klaasen told Rapport. 'We talked nicely, we planned everything nicely up to and including the World Cup in 2027. So when he finished as a coach, and the negotiations with CSA over contracts didn't go as planned, it made my decision a lot easier,' added Klaasen. It must be mentioned that Klaasen had called time on his Test career in 2024 and right after the IPL this year, the wicketkeeper-batter called it quits in both the white-ball formats for South Africa. Klaasen amassed 2141 runs in the 60 ODIs he played in. The right-hander was known for his brute power, as he had a knack for taking down spinners in the middle overs. His best was displayed during an ODI against Australia where he played a knock of 174 at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. Klaasen announced his retirement via a lengthy Instagram statement: "It is a sad day for me as I announce that I have decided to step away from international cricket. It took me a long time to decide what's best for me and my family for the future. It was truly a very difficult decision, but also one that I have absolute peace with." "To have played with the Proteas badge on my chest was and will always be the biggest honour in my career. I look forward to spending more time with my family as this decision will allow me to do so," he added. Klaasen was last seen in action for the SunRisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, where he scored 487 runs in 13 innings at an average of 44.27 and a strike rate of 172.69.
