Today, the Prime Minister, Mark Carney, concluded his participation in the 2025 G7 Leaders' Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta. Under Canada's Presidency, this G7 deepened co-operation with joint statements in the following areas:
Securing critical minerals supply chains
Adopting, powering, and sharing artificial intelligence
Collaborating on quantum innovation
Preventing, fighting, and recovering from wildfires
Countering foreign interference, including transnational repression
Fighting transnational crime, such as migrant smuggling
Prime Minister Carney also announced the following measures in support of Ukraine:

An additional $2 billion in military assistance this year.
The disbursement of a $2.3 billion loan to Ukraine through the G7 Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration Loans mechanism.
The allocation of $57.4 million in security-related assistance.
Canada will also be taking action to build stronger economies and international systems:
$391.3 million to catalyze private capital toward economic growth and development projects around the world.
Up to $185.6 million to accelerate the adoption and commercialization of artificial intelligence.
$120.4 million to global wildfire prevention, response, and recovery.
$80.3 million to build reliable critical minerals supply chains.
$22.5 million to accelerate the development and use of quantum technologies.
Up to $544 million in guarantees for new development financing in Latin America and the Caribbean.
While our threats cross borders, so do our partnerships and opportunities. In these areas of common interest, Canada is leading G7 co-operation to deliver stability, security, and prosperity.
Quote

Letters: Liberty versus wildfire risk and other burning issues

Article content Prime Minister Mark Carney is so far out of his league when it comes to Israel, it's an embarrassment to all Canadians with a conscience. Firstly, Carney knows absolutely nothing about what it's like to live in a country that has had to defend its existence from the moment it became the State of Israel in 1948. Carney has never had to actually live in a nation where thousands of rockets and missiles have been indiscriminately fired into the country to kill as many as possible. Article content I don't recall Carney having any military experience in the Middle East on his resume. And yet he has the chutzpah to declare, on behalf of all Canadians, that Israel's plan for Gaza won't work. It may or may not work, but Carney has zero skin in the game and zero credibility to attempt to tell a fellow democracy how to manage the war that was started and will be ever perpetuated by Hamas. Article content Carney should be managing/focusing on the faltering Canadian economy rather than singling out and threatening Israel. Article content Article content Catherine Lévesque reports that Premiers Danielle Smith of Alberta and Doug Ford of Ontario agree that more pipelines are required to transport Alberta crude across the country. Article content So, with the quick passage of Prime Minister Mark Carney's Bill C-5 it would seem that all that is needed now is for a private-sector consortium to put forward a proposal that Ottawa deems is worthy of using Bill C-5 to bypass other existing Liberal legislation. Article content Perhaps it would have been more straightforward to follow the Conservative plan: i.e. Scrap the offending legislation — Bill C-69 (the no more pipelines act) and the bill prohibiting tanker traffic off the West Coast. In other words, to eliminate federal interference entirely. Article content Article content Article content The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and Canada as a nation reached a new low in the suppression of free expression and antisemitism by cancelling the showing of a documentary about the October 7 attacks by Hamas terrorists. Although it has since walked back that decision, and now says it will be showing the documentary, in its initial cancelling TIFF was either cowering in fear of anti-Israel activists or demonstrating support for Hamas.

Carney says Trump is ‘creating the opportunity' to end war in Ukraine

Prime Minister Mark Carney speaks with media during a news conference in Ottawa, Wednesday, July 30, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Adrian Wyld Prime Minister Mark Carney says the leadership of U.S. President Donald Trump is 'creating the opportunity to end Russia's illegal war in Ukraine.' In a statement released Saturday, the day after Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Carney praised the U.S. administration's efforts to end the war. 'Robust and credible security guarantees are essential to any just and lasting peace. I welcome the openness of the United States to providing security guarantees as part of Coalition of the Willing's efforts,' Carney said in the statement. 'Canada is co-ordinating closely with President Zelenskyy and our partners in the Coalition of the Willing to intensify our steadfast support for Ukraine and our shared commitment to its peace and security.' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not attend the Alaska summit, which ended without any agreement on a ceasefire or path to end the war. Putin's visit to Alaska was his first to the United States in 10 years and his first to a Western country since invading Ukraine in 2022. In the wake of the meeting, Trump reversed course to say an overall peace agreement — not the ceasefire he has long championed — is the next step in ending the war in Ukraine. Trump committed to convene more meetings, including one with Zelenskyy at the White House on Monday. Zelenskyy said he had a 'long and substantive' conversation with Trump early Saturday and that they would 'discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war' on Monday. Carney took part in talks Wednesday with European leaders and spoke directly with Zelenskyy on Monday. The prime minister said on social media that Canada's partners insist that Ukrainians decide their own future with diplomatic efforts reinforced by military and economic pressure on Russia.
