Prime Minister Carney concludes 2025 G7 Leaders' Summit Français
Today, the Prime Minister, Mark Carney, concluded his participation in the 2025 G7 Leaders' Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta. Under Canada's Presidency, this G7 deepened co-operation with joint statements in the following areas:
Securing critical minerals supply chains
Adopting, powering, and sharing artificial intelligence
Collaborating on quantum innovation
Preventing, fighting, and recovering from wildfires
Countering foreign interference, including transnational repression
Fighting transnational crime, such as migrant smuggling
Prime Minister Carney also announced the following measures in support of Ukraine:
Sanctions on individuals, entities, and vessels that continue to support Russia's aggression in Ukraine.
An additional $2 billion in military assistance this year.
The disbursement of a $2.3 billion loan to Ukraine through the G7 Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration Loans mechanism.
The allocation of $57.4 million in security-related assistance.
Canada will also be taking action to build stronger economies and international systems:
$391.3 million to catalyze private capital toward economic growth and development projects around the world.
Up to $185.6 million to accelerate the adoption and commercialization of artificial intelligence.
$120.4 million to global wildfire prevention, response, and recovery.
$80.3 million to build reliable critical minerals supply chains.
$22.5 million to accelerate the development and use of quantum technologies.
Up to $544 million in guarantees for new development financing in Latin America and the Caribbean.
While our threats cross borders, so do our partnerships and opportunities. In these areas of common interest, Canada is leading G7 co-operation to deliver stability, security, and prosperity.

Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge Operations Remain Suspended Pending Outcome of CIRB Process
Rolling cancellations now extend to the afternoon of August 17, 2025 MONTRÉAL, August 16, 2025 /CNW/ - Air Canada today said all flights of Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge remain suspended pending the outcome of a Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) process related to a directive by the Government of Canada ordering binding arbitration in the company's contract negotiations with its flight attendants. Customers whose flights are cancelled are being notified of the cancellations and offered options that include a full refund, a future travel credit or rebooking on another airline. Those whose flights are cancelled are strongly advised not to go to the airport unless they have a confirmed booking on a flight by another carrier. In response to a labour disruption by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) that led to a strike on August 16, Air Canada has been cancelling flights on a rolling basis. At present, all flights by Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge are cancelled until the afternoon (EDT) of August 17, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Adrian Wyld Prime Minister Mark Carney says the leadership of U.S. President Donald Trump is 'creating the opportunity to end Russia's illegal war in Ukraine.' In a statement released Saturday, the day after Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Carney praised the U.S. administration's efforts to end the war. 'Robust and credible security guarantees are essential to any just and lasting peace. I welcome the openness of the United States to providing security guarantees as part of Coalition of the Willing's efforts,' Carney said in the statement. 'Canada is co-ordinating closely with President Zelenskyy and our partners in the Coalition of the Willing to intensify our steadfast support for Ukraine and our shared commitment to its peace and security.' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not attend the Alaska summit, which ended without any agreement on a ceasefire or path to end the war. Putin's visit to Alaska was his first to the United States in 10 years and his first to a Western country since invading Ukraine in 2022. In the wake of the meeting, Trump reversed course to say an overall peace agreement — not the ceasefire he has long championed — is the next step in ending the war in Ukraine. Trump committed to convene more meetings, including one with Zelenskyy at the White House on Monday. Zelenskyy said he had a 'long and substantive' conversation with Trump early Saturday and that they would 'discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war' on Monday. Carney took part in talks Wednesday with European leaders and spoke directly with Zelenskyy on Monday. The prime minister said on social media that Canada's partners insist that Ukrainians decide their own future with diplomatic efforts reinforced by military and economic pressure on Russia.
