BBC EastEnders return spells trouble for major couple in early iPlayer release

This article contains spoilers for tomorrow's episode of EastEnders, which airs Tuesday at 7.30pm on BBC One or can be streamed now on iPlayer.
Junior Knight (Micah Balfour) has returned to Albert Square, with a huge bombshell.
As viewers of the soap know, the businessman has been taking some time away from the area to visit his son Xavier in recent weeks – and he clearly couldn't wait any longer to reveal some damning information about dad George (Colin Salmon).
Things are already tense in The Queen Vic following the revelation that George helped his ex-wife Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) with the relaunch of her boozer The Prince Albert.
Her staff had walked out, and there was some serious redecorating to do, and so he paid for some hire staff to complete the tasks for her.
His current spouse Elaine (Harriet Thorpe) had absolutely no idea of his kind gesture, and when she did find out, considered it to be the ultimate betrayal.
As things began to thaw out in the most recently instalment, George apologises for going behind her back, while Elaine offered her own 'sorry' for kicking off at Cindy's re-opening bash.
Things seemed to be going swimmingly, but they were blissfully unaware of the storm brewing.
Junior swanned down Turpin Road, bumping into Cindy – who was clearly keen to kickstart their fling again. She asked him for lunch, but he had other places to be.
Elaine prepared a touching gift for George to show her commitment, with the whole family gathering around to watch him unwrap. However, Junior presented his own nightmarish present.
He revealed that, on Christmas night, his dad visited his mum Sabrina.
This completely contradicts his previously established alibi of taking part in an illegal boxing match.
An enraged Elaine ordered the family upstairs, where an argument escalated. George tried to explain his actions, saying that he needed to talk to someone who knew Junior better than anyone else in the wake of his affair with Cindy.

Elaine began to understand, but then backtracked. If he was telling the truth, then why did he have blood on his shirt? More Trending
George then blurted out that Sabrina had tried to kiss him, and when he rejected her, she slapped him and made his nose bleed. Elaine then began to think about how many people he got to lie for him in the aftermath – namely his brother Kojo (Dayo Koleosho) – who had no idea where he actually was.
Trying to hold it together, Elaine ordered him to leave. He then sought advice from an unlikely source, with the encounter overseen by his scorned wife.

EastEnders star suspended by BBC after disabled slur on Strictly set

EastEnders star suspended by BBC after disabled slur on Strictly set A video emerged of the actor, who plays Jay Brown on the soap, using the term to describe the people of Blackpool, the town where the show was being filmed, The Sun on Sunday first reported (Image: ITV ) EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick has been suspended by the BBC after using a disabled slur on the Strictly Come Dancing set. A video emerged of the actor, who plays Jay Brown on the soap, using the term to describe the people of Blackpool, the town where the show was being filmed, The Sun on Sunday first reported. ‌ Borthwick is said to have made the offensive remark on a phone video while the Strictly cast were at Blackpool Tower Ballroom last November. ‌ A spokesperson for the BBC said: "This language is entirely unacceptable and in no way reflects the values or standards we hold and expect at the BBC. "We have robust processes in place for this." Warren Kirwan, media manager at disability equality charity Scope, said: "Attitudes and language like this are never acceptable. Article continues below "It's not just ignorant and hurtful to disabled people, it has wider consequences. "Negative attitudes hold disabled people back in all areas of life, from getting a job to shopping on the high street. "Mr Borthwick needs to reflect on what he said, educate himself and do better. ‌ "We hope he takes the opportunity to get to know the reality of disabled people's lives." Borthwick won the Strictly 2023 Christmas special with Nancy Xu, and won the best actor gong at the Inside Soap Awards in September that year, with the show recognised with the best storyline for Loving And Losing Lola, about character Lola Pearce-Brown's brain tumour diagnosis. As part of the storyline, Borthwick, as Lola's husband Jay, and Emma Barton, as Honey Mitchell, ran the London Marathon in character in honour of Lola after her death. ‌ His suspension comes after Wynne Evans last week said he had been dropped by the BBC, following an apology saying that he used "inappropriate language" during the launch of the Strictly Come Dancing tour. The Welsh opera singer, 53, known for the insurance advertisements, will no longer be a BBC Radio Wales presenter, he announced on May 30. Earlier this year, he apologised for language that he called "inappropriate and unacceptable" after The Mail On Sunday reported that Evans was heard making a remark to a woman in a video filmed during the Strictly launch event. ‌ It is understood he was given a warning over the remark by tour producers. In January, he said: "I've agreed with the BBC that I'll take some time out from my radio show and the Strictly Live tour, as well as my other public commitments, to prioritise my wellbeing. "I am deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate actions have caused, and plan to take this time for self-reflection. ‌ "Apologies to those I won't get to see at the remaining performances and I'm grateful to my fellow tour gang for all the amazing support they have given me." The singer, who performed in the 25th anniversary of The Phantom Of The Opera and also won 2023's Celebrity MasterChef, told The Sun on Sunday earlier this month that the Strictly comment was not sexual or directed at one of the female cast but was a nickname for fellow contestant Borthwick. He told the paper: "I didn't see the statement, Old Spit-roast Boy was a nickname for Jamie Borthwick. I'm not a bad guy, I'm not a misogynist, I'm not any of these things." ‌ Evans added: "And so I went, 'I'm so sorry'. And that was taken as a formal apology, so the press team issued a statement. I didn't see it. "When I read the apology within the context of the story as it had been written, I was absolutely horrified." The Strictly tour saw contestants of the most recent series return to the dancefloor, including Love Island star Tasha Ghouri, actress Sarah Hadland, JLS singer JB Gill, The X Factor winner Shayne Ward and Gladiators star Montell Douglas. Coronation Street bosses urged to wake up over bad stories

The programme has been slammed by viewers for its over-reliance on serious crime stories and the under-utilisation of established characters, something that many believe was the reason for its poor showing at the British Soap Awards. Corrie, which first aired all the way back in 1960, was outshone by rival soap operas like EastEnders last week, leading to concern from some ITV viewers. The only title won by Coronation Street at the British Soap Awards last week was claimed by David Neilson (Roy Cropper) for the Outstanding Achievement category. According to the Radio Times, the rest were won by Hollyoaks, Emmerdale and EastEnders. Taking to the Coronation Street Reddit, one fan simply demanded that the showrunners "wake up" and added that it "absolutely deserved to get no awards" last week. They wrote: "The soap awards should be a massive wake-up call. Corrie absolutely deserved to get no awards, sorry to say, not compared to EastEnders. "The show has been a constant crime saga with pointless loopholed stories carried by meaningless characters. I remember corrie in the 2017/18 days when they did Aidan's suicide, Bethany's grooming plot, David's rape. "Going even further back, I remember Kirsty and Tyrone's domestic abuse storyline, which was heavily lauded. Even the racism with Max/Lauren and Alia alongside Geoff's abuse of Yasmin was heartbreaking to see. "Yes, they were miserable and dark stories, but they were relevant stories and had us hooked, and we cared so much about what these characters were going through." They added: "It's ridiculous how established characters are being sidelined for newer ones who haven't even built a rapport with audiences. "Work with some charities and do further research on issue-based stories that can be explored instead of being lazy and recycling constant cheating and crime storylines with the same predictable characters. "I get the newer actors are probs cheaper to use and easier to fit in anywhere to make up a storyline but overusing them creates resentment towards them. "Use them sensibly and start giving the older cast members more meaty storylines." Coronation Street icon of 25 years leaves show tonight after huge decision Fans cry soap is 'robbed' at British Soap Awards as 'chaos' halts start to show Coronation Street legend accidentally reveals Emmerdale crossover spoiler Finishing the complaint, the ITV viewer said: "Listen to your audiences for once, otherwise these pointless stories that always revolve around cheating and crime are further going to decrease your popularity." Other fans of the show agreed with one user writing: "Not going to lie. I do still enjoy Corrie. But there needs to be more 'kitchen sink'/Rovers scenes. The occasional trauma-based storyline better executed. It's like they pick and choose which they want to do well." Another added: "Coronation Street has been the worst I have ever known it in the past 12 months."

Family of Race Across The World's Sam Gardiner ‘overwhelmed' by support

Family of Race Across The World's Sam Gardiner 'overwhelmed' by support The 24-year-old, who competed in the BBC One series alongside his mother Jo, died following a car crash last month Sam, 24, died last month in a tragic car accident (Image: PA Media ) The family of Race Across The World contestant Sam Gardiner have issued a message of thanks for the love and support following their son's death and also thanked people for donations to a fundraising campaign set up in his memory. The 24-year-old, who competed in the BBC One series alongside his mother Jo, died following a car crash last month. A JustGiving page launched in his memory by his family, in aid of National FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder), has so far raised more than £10,000. His mother said: "We have been overwhelmed by the tens of thousands of messages of love and support on social media and in comments to press reporting. "We would like to thank the BBC, Studio Lambert and everyone at Race Across The World production, fellow contestants and fans of the show for all their support at this terrible time. It has been very comforting to know that Sam touched so many people. "I have been particularly moved by all the messages that Sam was an inspiration to many who have been impacted by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. Article continues below "We adopted Sam and he was diagnosed with FASD. As viewers of season two will recall, this was a big challenge both for Sam and for us as his parents. "National FASD helped us on that journey. If some good comes of this tragedy, it will be that FASD is better understood." Mr Gardiner was driving a white Volkswagen Golf R estate when it came off the road and rolled before landing on its side. The accident happened on the A34 in Gatley, near Cheadle, on Monday May 26 and he died on May 29 from his injuries, his family said last week. Broadcast in March 2020, Sam and Jo ventured across Mexico and Argentina as part of the second series of the BBC show. Mr Gardiner's father Andrew said: "When the news broke last week, friends asked how they could help. "After some thought, I decided to set up a JustGiving page to raise money for National FASD in memory of Sam. The page is called Sam Gardiner; Super Human. "I set the target at £500 thinking a few friends might be generous enough to make a donation. So far it's raised 20 times that. It's very humbling to see the RATW family rally to this worthy cause." The National Organisation for FASD says on its official website that it "provides support to people with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, their families and communities, campaigns to raise public awareness, and promotes relevant policies and practices". The website also describes FASD as resulting "when prenatal alcohol exposure affects the developing brain and body.. It says: "FASD is a spectrum. Each person with FASD is affected differently. "While more than 400 conditions can co-occur, FASD is at its core a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition. All people with FASD have many strengths. Early diagnosis and appropriate support are essential, especially for executive functioning." A message on the official National FASD Instagram account said: "Sam lived his life full of love, exuberance and adventure as seen on BBC's Race Across the World. "National FASD is both humbled and honoured to help carry on his legacy via donations coming from hundreds." Article continues below A private funeral will be held later this month.
