PayPal to integrate UPI for cross-border payments with global partners

PayPal is partnering with NPCI International and global wallets to enable Indian users to make cross-border payments using UPI, starting with US-based merchants
Mumbai
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is being integrated with global payments major PayPal, enabling seamless cross-border transactions between UPI users and merchants abroad.
This development follows PayPal's collaboration with multiple global partners to connect digital payment systems and wallets worldwide.
Among these partnerships is its tie-up with NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the body tasked with the internationalisation of the UPI and RuPay card networks.
Indian UPI users transacting with merchants in the United States will soon be able to select UPI as a payment option by clicking the PayPal button at checkout.
PayPal is also partnering with other global payment systems such as Latin America's Mercado Pago, China's TenPay Global, and US-based Venmo, in addition to India's NIPL.
'The integration of UPI on PayPal World's platform will mark a significant step in expanding UPI's global footprint. This collaboration will enhance convenience for Indian users making payments abroad and enable global businesses and merchants to tap into a growing base of UPI users,' said Ritesh Shukla, managing director and chief executive officer, NIPL.
These partnerships enable interoperability between different global payment systems, easing cross-border transactions. Users onboarded with partners connected to PayPal and Venmo will be able to execute payments through this interoperable framework.
The platform is expected to expand access to nearly two billion users, according to the fintech firm.
PayPal World is also compatible with features such as dynamic payment buttons and even stablecoins.

Ludhiana: Week on, upgraded software in post offices faces multiple glitches

A week after its rollout, the much-hyped IT 2.0 digital upgrade in post offices across Ludhiana has turned into a flop show, leaving visitors frustrated and routine services in disarray. Postal staff say they are struggling with parcel bookings, money order payments, and invoice-related work. (Manish/HT) Tall promises, technical chaos Launched on August 5 with promises of stronger digital security, faster service, and better user experience, the new system has instead been plagued by technical glitches, repeated server crashes, and slower processing. Postal staff say they are struggling with parcel bookings, letter deliveries, dispatches, money order payments, and invoice-related work. 'The server goes down repeatedly during rush hours, sometimes for hours at a stretch, making it impossible to manage the crowd. When transactions freeze mid way, we have to cancel and restart the process, often leading to heated arguments from customers who have already been waiting for long. It not only delays our work but also creates a stressful and chaotic atmosphere at the counters', said a head office employee on condition of anonymity. Meanwhile, residents also expressed frustration over the constant breakdowns. 'We came to the post office for urgent and affordable deliveries, but now it takes longer than before. Even small parcel bookings stretch into a 20 to 30-minute wait, and sometimes we have to come back the next day,' said Shubham Sharma, a visitor to the head post office. Increased manual work Highlighting the grim picture, postal staff said the upgrade came with hefty assurances of digital advancement, but in reality, it has increased our manual work. The new system has more mandatory columns than before, making it more complex to operate. With the server frequently collapsing, we are forced to record every dispatch, every transaction in Excel sheets. Once the system is restored, this data has to be entered again, doubling the workload, they added. Union writes to the department of posts In a letter written to the department of posts, the local unit of All India Gramin Dak Sevaks Union (AIGDSU) highlighted that the new Internal App 2.0 is grappled with operational problems. It often fails to properly scan mail bags and the system often does not show them as received or sent. This means letters and parcels get stuck instead of moving to their destination. Money order rules in the app are unclear, and sometimes the balance shown in the app does not match with the branch account, leading to discrepancies. In rural belts of Ludhiana, the app barely works, often showing 'server busy' or freezing. Some transactions, like AEPS (Aadhaar-based payments), are not recorded properly, leading to confusion. The union further urged the department for quick fix and concrete solutions. Official response When contacted, senior postmaster Balbir Singh said the issues stem mainly from backend with problems in bookings and dispatches caused by the added features in the new system. 'Our accounts and transactions are the most affected, while other services are functioning normally,' he stated.

Yashobhoomi convention centre in Delhi's Dwarka wins International Architecture Award 2024

New Delhi It was inaugurated in September 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. (HT Archive) The Yashobhoomi Convention and Exhibition Centre in Dwarka, southwest Delhi, has won the International Architecture Award 2024 under the 'Civic Centre' category, which will be presented next month at the historic Acropolis in Athens, Greece, a globally recognised landmark in architecture. The prize is awarded by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, and The European Centre for Architecture Art, Design and Urban Studies. Dikshu C Kukreja, managing principal of CP Kukreja Architects, which designed the centre, said: 'Yashobhoomi embodies Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of positioning India as a leading global hub.' Designed in collaboration with IDOM (Spain), Yashobhoomi spans 225 acres and has a built-up area of 2.2 million square feet. It was inaugurated in September 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The venue, built at a cost of ₹5,400 crore, features multiple exhibition halls, auditoriums and conference rooms to host trade and diplomatic events. Kukreja said the Union ministry of commerce selected them for the global competition. The firm is renowned for designing the Jawaharlal Nehru University and the Ambadeep Towers in Delhi. It was recently internationally recognised for designing the Madhya Pradesh state secretariat and Gautam Buddha University. Recalling that the project's conceptualisation involved close collaboration with retired IAS officer Amitabh Kant, who was also the G20 Sherpa, to ensure the facility could host high-profile gatherings, such as the G20 Summit. After the award was announced, Kant thanked the Prime Minister on the social media platform X, 'for the vision and opportunity to conceptualise and drive it as Secretary DIPP (Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion)'. What sets Yashobhoomi apart, Kukreja said, is its fusion of modern technology with traditional Indian identity. 'It's easy to copy global examples from Germany, Korea, or the US; but for me, it was essential to root the design in India's ethos—through stepwell-inspired forms, jali screens, aangan-like light courts, and interiors steeped in Indian art and motifs.' He said the exhibition hall spans an area equivalent to four football fields. The venue features a 100-metre column-free span and the world's largest LED facade. 'The venue is also India's first to incorporate retractable seating that can transform a 6,000-seater hall into a flat-floored multi-purpose space at the touch of a button,' he said. Large venues like this often turn into 'white elephants' due to a lack of versatility. 'So, we ensured that the hall can have multiple uses,' he said. Kukreja said sustainability was a core design priority, and this secured the Indian Green Building Council's platinum rating. 'Steel was chosen to minimise localised pollution. This ensured durability and lower carbon impact, while featuring recycled materials, locally sourced granite and marble, and off-site fabricated glass-reinforced concrete,' he said. Kukreja said the award was more than personal recognition. 'This is about India creating architecture the world talks about and respects.'
