5 cops among 16 arrested for cable theft in Selangor, KL

PETALING JAYA : Five police officers have been arrested over their alleged involvement in cable theft activities in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor over the past one year.
Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said the two sergeants and three corporals, serving at district police headquarters and stations in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, were among 16 suspects arrested in connection with a syndicate known as 'Sindiket Mulia', Bernama reported.
'Investigations found that the syndicate members received information from the police officers involved about areas with fewer patrols and so on,' he was quoted as saying.
Hussein said the police officers had been under remand since May 23 to assist in investigations after being arrested on May 22 at several locations in Cheras and Kajang.
He said the syndicate was also aided by technicians and security guards from companies appointed by Telekom Malaysia.
According to Hussein, these policemen acted as insiders to inform syndicate members about which cable parts to cut to prevent alarms from being triggered.
'Every cable theft involved insiders who showed them where and how to steal the cables,' he said.
Hussein said the stolen cables were taken to a plantation to have the copper extracted for sale to scrap metal dealers.
He said the syndicate was masterminded by two men with 36 and 29 previous criminal cases each, including drug-related offences.
'Initial investigations found the syndicate had conducted 23 transactions at scrap metal shops around Semenyih, making an estimated RM683,000. We believe this syndicate has committed more than 23 thefts,' he said.
Hussein said police seized a Toyota Hilux four-wheel-drive, a Proton Perdana, a Mitsubishi Fuso Canter lorry, 1.2 tonnes of metal, and metal-cutting equipment.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, Section 431A of the Penal Code for mischief involving telegraph cables and wires, and Section 29(1) of the Minor Offences Act 1955 for fraudulent possession of property.

AGC denies Anwar's pardon was invalid, rebuts Mahathir's claims as misleading
KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) yesterday denied that the pardon granted to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was invalid. In a statement, the AGC said this was because Anwar had been granted a full pardon by the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, which convened on May 16, 2018. 'The AGC affirms that the 51st Meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya was held on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at 11am at Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur. 'The meeting was chaired by His Majesty the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhammad V, and was also attended, among others, by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad himself, who was the Prime Minister at the time,' the AGC stated. According to the statement, based on the advice of the Pardons Board, Sultan Muhammad V consented to the granting of a full pardon to Anwar, along with his immediate release, effective from the date of the Pardons Board meeting. The statement added that for the purpose of the meeting, the Attorney General had also provided a written opinion on the matter in accordance with Clause (9), Article 42 of the Federal Constitution for the Pardons Board's consideration. Therefore, the AGC refuted the remarks made by Dr Mahathir, in which the former Prime Minister publicly claimed that the pardon was invalid as it did not go through a proper Pardons Board proceeding. In this connection, the AGC views the matter seriously as it involves constitutional and institutional interests. 'The AGC also emphasises that any statement that could mislead the public regarding the decision of the Pardons Board is completely inappropriate,' the statement said. — Bernama

Gunning to phase out analogue data, Gobind says Data Digitalisation Policy to be introduced next month
PUTRAJAYA, June 4 — The Digital Ministry will introduce a Data Digitalisation Policy next month to support the enforcement of the Data Sharing Act 2025 (Act 864). Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the policy, developed by the National Digital Department (JDN), will focus on enhancing data quality governance, data security, digital ethics, data storage and usage technologies, and promoting a digital culture in government administration and public service delivery. 'This is important because in order to succeed in areas like artificial intelligence (AI), we must ensure the data we use is in digital form, (but) many government datasets still exist in analogue formats such as images, audio, or hybrids,' Gobind told reporters after chairing the first meeting of the National Data Sharing Committee here yesterday. He said he has given JDN a three-month deadline to finalise the policy and hopes to present it to the Cabinet by July. The minister said the policy will be implemented not only at the federal level but also extended to state governments and local authorities, to ensure consistent data quality for effective policymaking and delivery of public benefits. 'Full digitalisation of government data will allow for better data sharing and analysis using AI, leading to more innovative and realistic cross-sector solutions,' he remarked. Gobind said that the Data Sharing Act 2025, which officially came into force on April 28, provides a structured legal framework for secure and efficient data sharing between federal ministries and agencies, which is expected to enhance public service delivery by allowing real-time data access, accelerating decision-making, and improving coordination without compromising government data security or personal privacy. 'This will lead to a more connected and data-driven government that benefits the people, safeguards their welfare, and drives economic growth,' he said. In fact, he said data sharing between agencies can also eliminate redundancy in data collection, reduce costs, improve public service efficiency, and strengthen public trust through transparency and accountability. 'Shared data ensures policies are planned and implemented based on accurate and up-to-date information,' Gobind said. The minister also expressed hope that state governments would introduce their own data sharing laws to enable effective integration with federal and local government systems. So far, he said the state governments of Penang, Selangor, and Sarawak have responded positively to the proposal. 'I will be visiting each state to discuss the matter directly with chief ministers and menteris besar,' he said. In his remark at the meeting earlier, Gobind said the National Data Sharing Committee, established under the Data Sharing Act 2025, is tasked with setting policy and strategic direction for public sector data sharing. 'We acknowledge the legal and technical challenges in data sharing between public agencies, states, and local authorities. Therefore, it is hoped that this committee will be able to streamline and facilitate secure inter-agency data sharing,' he said. — Bernama
