Landmark cryptocurrency legislation signed into law by U.S. President Donald Trump last week gives the fast-growing global crypto industry new legitimacy while making it easier for investors to gain exposure to the sector in a safe way, an expert says.
'It gives clarity, simplicity and lets everybody understand what the rules of the playing field are,' Andrew Forson, president of Toronto-based DeFi Technologies, told BNN Bloomberg in an interview on Wednesday.
'That encourages innovation without fear of inadvertently triggering a securities law or breaking some sort of rule that would make it really, really difficult for the business to recover from.'
The legislation, known as the GENIUS Act, is a major step toward legitimatizing the crypto industry in the eyes of the U.S. government through overarching rules and regulations. But the law's impact will reach far beyond American crypto markets, said Forson.
'The U.S. is without a doubt the largest capital market in the world, and whenever they provide a degree of regulatory clarity, it makes it easier for everybody worldwide,' he explained.
The rise of cryptocurrency trading has led to increased demand from investors looking to gain exposure to the industry without taking on the risk and volatility it's historically been associated with.
Crypto-linked exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have began popping up on exchanges around the world in recent months, offered by financial services companies like DeFi.
'DeFi Technologies and our wholly owned subsidiary Valour is probably one of Europe's most significant or prominent digital asset exchange-traded product (ETP) issuers,' Forson said.
'In particular, we have 78 digital asset-underlying ETPs listed on over eight exchanges throughout the world, and one of the big benefits of this is it makes it a lot easier for institutions and retail investors to gain exposure to digital assets in their investment portfolios.'
Forson said he acknowledges that there will likely continue to be a certain amount of hesitancy towards cryptocurrency from some investors given the numerous instances of fraud in the industry over the years.
The most notable example being the high-profile collapse of popular crypto exchange FTX in 2022, which led to fraud charges being brought against founder Sam Bankman-Fried. He eventually was found guilty and is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence.
'That actually is one of the reasons why DeFi… (is) so well positioned to help institutions and individuals gain real exposure to the digital asset space, with broad exposure across many, many digital assets beyond just bitcoin, in a safe and regulated manner,' said Forson.
Shares in DeFi itself, which were changing hands at around US$3 per share in midday trading on Thursday, are cheaper than they should be, Forson argued, noting that the company is profitable and has many avenues for future growth.
'I can unequivocally say that we are undervalued. We should be trading at a higher multiple than we are… we are a profitable company, we actually make real money and (will) continue to do so into the foreseeable future,' he said.
'Just a few days ago, we hit the US$1 billion assets under management metric, which is always a nice threshold to reach, with the assets that are held by Valour, and DeFi Technologies itself is also involved in a number of other areas including a corporate venture capital portfolio.'

Young families are shrinking their mortgages. But does this mean they are priced out?

Younger Canadian families are bucking the national trend and reducing their overall mortgage debt , figures from Statistics Canada suggest, but the decrease may not be all good news. After hitting a peak in the third quarter of 2022, average mortgage balances among families where the primary income earner is aged 35 or younger have fallen by about $15,500, according to a report out Tuesday from Toronto-Dominion Bank citing data from Statistics Canada. Even accounting for any seasonal variation, when comparing the first quarter of 2023 to this first quarter of 2025, there was an 8.5 per cent decline (or about $10,400 less on average) in mortgage balances among younger Canadians, said Maria Solovieva, TD economist and author of the report. All other age groups have seen a steady increase in household mortgage debt since the second quarter of 2020, Statistics Canada data show. It is likely many younger households are unable to access the housing market altogether due to affordability challenges , Solovieva said. After home prices hit their peak in March 2022, following the frenzy of homebuying amid lower interest rates during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bank of Canada started raising interest rates and home sales began to soften. Solovieva said younger Canadians have been prioritizing reducing their debt obligations in the face of rising borrowing costs. About 35 per cent of young adults are likely to rent, compared with less than a quarter of older age groups, according to Statistics Canada's 2024 Canadian Social Survey. There may also be other reasons for the drop in mortgage balances among young people. It is possible some younger Canadians are purchasing cheaper homes or own their homes outright, especially if they have received financial gifts from their parents, Solovieva said. Since the total value of real estate assets for younger Canadians has grown since the third quarter of 2022, it suggests more people in this age group are receiving financial help to buy homes than those who may be buying less expensive homes, Solovieva said. In the meantime, older Canadians are taking on more debt, although there is no sign they are taking on more investment properties or renovations to account for this, she said. In fact, Statistics Canada reported recently that households aged 55 to 64 years increased their mortgage balances by more than eight per cent from the first quarter of 2024 to the same period in 2025, while those aged 65 years and older increased their mortgage balances by nearly nine per cent. Older Canadians are expected to pass down $1 trillion to their heirs over the next few years, according to the most recent data from the Chartered Professional Accountants Canada. Many wealth advisers have reported these wealth transfers are already arriving in the form of early inheritances; in most cases to help adult children purchase their first homes. A 2024 Bank of Canada report also found more than 20 per cent of first-time home buyers received gifts to help make their down payments. Younger first-time home buyers were even more likely to receive gifts when purchasing their homes. This could exacerbate an existing trend, Solovieva said. Data show the lowest-income young households have seen their debt-to-income ratio balloon from 244 per cent before the pandemic to 446 per cent in Q1 2025. 'A lot of wealth (is) built through real estate, (so) somebody who is not in the market is left out,' said Solovieva, noting existing homeowners have largely benefited from rising real estate values over time. 'It's basically going to continue on as long as we still have this dynamic of unaffordability.' Solovieva does not expect this trend of waning mortgage balances to entirely reverse in the near future but does anticipate it to level off as immigration levels decline, which could cool growth in housing prices. The latest report from the Canadian Real Estate Association revealed the national average sale price was down 1.3 per cent year-over-year to hit $691,643 in June. • Email: slouis@

As more loyalty programs pop up, customers want access and tangibility: expert

Sorry, we're having trouble with this video. Please try again later. [5006/404] An increasing amount of Canadian companies are creating loyalty programs to retain customers and grow market share, and while each new program offers unique perks and benefits, consumers gravitate more towards certain ones. That's according to a recent report from Toronto-based customer engagement agency Bond Brand Loyalty, which examined consumer trends and gathered data from across more than a dozen market segments. 'A lot of programs have come to market in the last little while as brands have faced the circumstances of the market,' Sean Claessen, Bond's chief strategy officer, told BNN Bloomberg in a Monday interview. 'Leaders have said being close to customers is better, that's a safer place to be to understand their new needs or changing needs, and so loyalty programs historically have been one of the ways that a lot of marketers have tried to get closer to customers to understand those things.' Claessen said Canadian customers are keen to join almost any loyalty program that's offered to them; however, they typically are only active in about half of the programs they are part of. 'Customers raise their hands for all of the programs, but the ones that truly engage them and that pay off the effort that's required and afford them the things and the spending power that comes with those delayed dividends… that tends to be the ones that people stay active in,' he said. In the current economic environment, Canadian shoppers value tangibility, Claessen explained, and the ability to use things like loyalty points on day-to-day purchases, rather than just accumulating them over time. Claessen noted that Bond has been collecting customer preference data for more than a decade, and its 2025 'Loyalty Report' represents the first time that access took the top spot when it came to what consumers valued in a rewards program. 'Access has become the top driver in what satisfies Canadians with these programs… being first to know, getting a last call on a product that is going out of stock, anything that is sort of afforded to you by being a part of the club,' he said. 'That kind of mechanic in loyalty performs really, really well… that edge as a customer that makes you feel like it matters that I'm a customer, I'm getting that reciprocal benefit from the company.' Critics of loyalty programs have pointed to the collection of customer data as a downside to joining, as many companies require members to provide an email address, home address, phone number or more. But Claessen said that's becoming less of an issue for customers. According to Bond's report, 64 per cent of customers are comfortable sharing their data with a company in return for the benefits they prefer. 'Less and less consumers are worried about that, in fact, a lot of the data we use to determine what are good programs and how do they operate is customers volunteering their purchase data, the receipt data… that is part of a lot of linked loyalty programs lately,' he said. 'And that seems to be going swimmingly for all involved; for customers they report higher satisfaction, likelihood to stay with the brand, every metric that you would expect as a business goes up and there's sort of a win-win-win in that situation.' Based on Bond's findings in its 2025 report and in previous years, it's clear that loyalty programs do pay off for the companies that invest in them – as long as they're designed and managed well, said Claessen. 'A well-designed program that's properly managed is all incremental, so as you would compare it to non-loyalty participating customers, the results would be clearly in favour of customers who are receiving these offers and getting these perks and benefits,' he said. 'They tend to consolidate their shopping if it's a fragmented category with the kinds of brands who are offering them those programs.'

Should You Buy, Sell, or Hold MSTR Stock Before Q2 Earnings?

MicroStrategy MSTR, doing business as 'Strategy,' is set to report its second-quarter 2025 results on July 31. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for second-quarter revenues is currently pegged at $112.15 million, indicating growth of 0.64% year over year. The consensus mark for loss is currently pegged at 12 cents per share, unchanged over the past 30 days. The company reported a loss of 76 cents per share in the year-ago quarter. MicroStrategy Incorporated Price and EPS Surprise Let's see how things are shaping up prior to this announcement. Factors to Note for MSTR's Q2 Earnings Strategy is the world's largest bitcoin treasury company, holding 607,770 Bitcoins as of July 20, 2025. In July, Strategy acquired 6,220 Bitcoins for $739.8 million. In early June, Strategy acquired 10,100 bitcoins for $1.05 billion. Strategy is expected to have benefited from the Trump administration's announcement of the establishment of a strategic bitcoin reserve. Bitcoin, the most popular cryptocurrency, has been soaring due to increasing acceptance as a non-sovereign asset, as well as higher institutional and corporate adoption. MSTR is expected to have benefited from increasing bitcoin yield, which was 13.7% year to date (as of April 28, 2025). This is expected to keep the company on track to reach the full-year target of 25% and the bitcoin dollar gain target of $15 billion. Bitcoin gains in dollar terms were $4.1 billion in the first quarter of 2025 and $5.8 billion as of April 28, 2025. Strategy is expected to have benefited from growing software subscription revenues that surged 62% year over year to $37.1 million and accounted for 33% of first-quarter 2025 total revenues. Subscription billings grew 38% year over year to $24.5 million. The trend is expected to have continued in the to-be-reported quarter. MSTR Shares Outperform Sector, Industry Strategy shares have returned 39.4% year to date (YTD), outperforming the Zacks Computer & Technology sector's return of 11.3% and the Zacks Computer Software industry's 19.4%. MSTR shares have outperformed MARA Digital MARA and Tesla TSLA YTD, but lag Riot Platform RIOT. While MARA Digital and Riot Platform shares returned 2.3% and 42.1%, respectively, Tesla dropped 19.4%. MSTR Stock's Performance Strategy stock is not so cheap, as the Value Score of F suggests a stretched valuation at this moment. In terms of Price/Book, MSTR is trading at 3.43X, higher than MARA Digital's 1.62X and Riot Platform's 1.76X. MSTR's Benefits Growing From Growing Bitcoin Holding The passing of the GENIUS Act on July 17 provides a legal background to stablecoins. Other pending regulations — The CLARITY Act and The Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act — bode well for cryptocurrency enthusiasts. The improving favorable regulatory environment bodes well for Strategy, although Bitcoin's volatility is a headache. Strategy estimates to generate net proceeds of $2.474 billion from the initial public offering of 28,011,111 shares of Variable Rate Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock (the 'STRC Stock'), at a public offering price of $90 per share. Strategy has issued $20.9 billion in equities and $6.4 billion in fixed income securities as part of its 21/21 plan since Oct. 30, 2024. The company has $14.6 million remaining under fixed income securities and $0.1 million under equities as part of the existing plan. Strategy currently plans to raise $42 billion through equity issuance and $42 billion through fixed income securities by the end of 2027. Under the current plan, the company has $21.1 billion in equity and $35.6 billion in fixed income securities remaining to be issued. Strategy is expanding AI capabilities with the general availability of Mosaic, an AI-powered Universal Intelligence Layer. This launch aligns with the company's shift toward cloud-first, subscription-based services. The company benefits from continuing cloud demand with its flagship Strategy One that powers some of the largest analytics deployments in the world. Strategy One supports varied industries, including retail, banking, technology, manufacturing, insurance, consulting, healthcare, telecommunications and the public sector. Conclusion Bitcoin's inherent volatility, along with Strategy's stretched valuation, makes the MSTR stock a risky bet ahead of the second quarter of 2025.
