Florida A&M reportedly finalizing deal with 1993 Heisman winner Charlie Ward to become men's basketball coach
According to ESPN, Florida A&M is finishing a deal to hire the ex-Florida State star as its next men's basketball coach. Ward recently served as an assistant coach for USA Basketball during the 2025 Nike Hoops Summit.

The 54-year-old won the 1993 Heisman Trophy while he was a two-sport star with the Seminoles. Ward played guard for the FSU basketball team while also serving as the football team's quarterback. In 1993, he completed nearly 70% of his passes for 3,032 yards and 27 TDs with just four interceptions. He also rushed for 339 yards and four scores.
The Seminoles went 12-1 that season and beat Nebraska 18-16 in the Orange Bowl to win the national title after finishing first in the final AP Top 25 of the season. FSU's only loss came to Notre Dame in November when the Fighting Irish won 31-24 in a matchup of the Nos. 1 and 2 teams in the country.
Ward chose basketball over the NFL, however, and was a first-round pick of the Knicks in the 1994 NBA Draft. He played for nine seasons with the franchise before ending his career with the Spurs and Rockets. Ward averaged 6.5 points per game over 580 appearances with the Knicks and shot 41% from the field.

Ward is being lined up to replace Patrick Crarey II after Crarey left the Rattlers to coach Grambling less than a week ago. Crarey was with the school for just one season as the Rattlers went 14-17 overall and 10-8 in the SWAC with a win in the conference tournament.
That record was an eight-game improvement over the 2023-24 season, when Florida A&M went 6-23 and just 4-14 in conference play. The Rattlers haven't had a winning season since making the NCAA tournament as a No. 16 seed in 2007 as a member of the MEAC.

This past weekend marked the beginning of what will be a loaded season when it comes to former Alabama Crimson Tide football players in the NFL. Starting with Week 1 of the NFL Preseason, not all of the program's former players at the professional level took the field in action this past weekend, as a majority of teams did not play their starters across the league. There were however still a large portion of former Alabama greats in action, which included many of the Crimson Tide's rookies from the 2025 NFL draft. Taking an overall look at the former Crimson Tide greats however, here are five Alabama standouts from Week 1 of the 2025 NFL Preseason. Will Reichard, Kicker - Minnesota Vikings Reichard was a big reason as to why Minnesota defeated the Texans, 20-10, making both of his field goal attempts from 48-and-38 yards out. The former Alabama kicker also made both extra point attempts. JK Scott, Punter - Los Angeles Chargers Scott was active during Los Angeles' 27-13 win over the Saints, punting the ball six times for a total of 290 yards, which translates to an average of 48.3 yards per punt. The Chargers punter also had a long of 58, while also downing two inside the 20-yard line. Bryce Young, Quarterback - Carolina Panthers The former Heisman Trophy winner did not play much during Carolina's 30-10 loss to Cleveland, but made the most of his limited action after drawing starting at quarterback. Young, who was sacked once, completed 4-of-6 passes for 58 yards and a touchdown, while also owning a passer rating of 137.5. Jalen Milroe, Quarterback - Seattle Seahawks Milroe took social media by storm Thursday night with his performance in Seattle's 23-23 tie against the Las Vegas Raiders. Overall, Milroe completed 6-of-10 passes for 61 yards in his debut with a passer rating of 77.5, while also rushing for 38 yards on three attempts. John Metchie III, Wide Receiver - Houston Texans Lastly, Metchie had a strong showing in Houston's 20-10 loss at Minnesota, hauling in five receptions for 45 yards to lead the Texans in receiving. Metchie also made an impact on special teams, returning a kickoff for 23 yards. It is a clean sweep! The AP Top 25 Preseason Poll has ranked the Texas Longhorns as the No. 1 team in the country. Last week, the No. 1 team in the US LBM Coaches Poll in the US LBM Coaches Poll. Texas in the top spot is the biggest similarity between the polls. Penn State jumps Ohio State to take the No. 2 spot in the AP Top 25. The Buckeyes are ranked second in the Coaches Poll. Texas A&M tight end preview: A&M has many new faces in the room, who will rise to the top?
The 2025 football season is coming up fast, and there's plenty of excitement surrounding year two under Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko. The tight end position has a lot of new faces but packed with talent and experience. Due to graduation and transfers, the Aggie coaching staff had to quickly bring in several tight ends to fill the depth chart. The only returning scholarship TE was Theo Melin Ohrstrom, who flashed at times last season but has areas he needs to improve. The addition of a few transfers and freshmen, Kiotti Armstrong, it's a deep room with a lot to prove. Depth Chart Snapshot Player Spotlight Freshmen Class: Kiotti Armstrong (likely to see the field) Scheme Fit & Outlook Collin Klein's offense leans on motion, misdirection, and hybrid personnel. The tight end room must deliver: Expect Niblack and Ohrstrom to rotate heavily, with Riley emerging in red zone and Boerkircher anchoring depth. Usage may spike in short-yardage and play-action packages, especially with Marcel Reed settling in as QB1. Final Thoughts Texas A&M's tight end room is rebuilt, not reloaded. Niblack brings flash, Ohrstrom brings familiarity, and Riley brings intrigue. It's a group with upside, but also uncertainty. If blocking improves and chemistry clicks, this unit could quietly become a strength in Elko's second season.
