GMA Network03-07-2025
World-renowned singer-actress Lea Salonga got the surprise of her life when she woke up to the news that she is going to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next year.
The Filipino musical legend, the recipient of a Tony Award and a Laurence Olivier Award in addition to her nominations for two Grammy Awards, told us by email in an exclusive interview, "Okay, first of all, as I'm battling jet lag (currently in Manila rehearsing for 'Into the Woods'), I woke up at 5:46 a.m. and headed straight to social media. I started seeing that I was going to get my own star, and thought, this can't be real. Then I checked texts coming from my manager, and his message was, 'Call me before you look at any social media.'
"He had sent the Billboard article naming me as one of the recipients, so at the moment, I'm still in a daze and bleary-eyed, but in utter disbelief!
"Thanks to the MIFF (Manila International Film Festival) for nominating me! This is one of those honors that you don't ever foresee getting, and getting one feels so unreal! It's amazing!"
Salonga, fresh from her successful run in Stephen Sondheim's "Old Friends" which brought her back to London's West End, Broadway and Los Angeles, is now in Manila rehearsing for "Into the Woods." It will be her first musical in the Philippines in six years. She will be playing The Witch, the iconic role which she played before when she was only 23 years old. Salonga's last musical in the Philippines was "Sweeney Todd" in 2019.
She will be part of the Class of 2026 Hollywood Walk of Fame awardees, which include the Australian pop group Air Supply, Josh Groban, Miley Cyrus, Lyle Lovett, Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald, Timothee Chalamet, Rami Malek, Emily Blunt, Gordon Ramsey, Rachel McAdams, Franco Nero, Marion Cotillard, Shaquille O'Neal, Brazilian musician Paulinho da Costa, Indian actress Deepika Padukone, Mexican entertainer Lucero, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, The Clark Sisters, Intocable, Angelique Kidjo, ABC's "Good Morning America" co-hosts Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos, among others.
Salonga and comedian Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias are the only representatives in the Live Theatre/Live Performance category.
The announcement of the 35 awardees was held on Wednesday, July 2, at a press conference at Ovation Hollywood. Peter Roth, former CEO of Warner Bros. Television and chairman of the Walk of Fame selection committee, said in a statement, "We are excited to announce the newest selection of 35 esteemed individuals who will be enshrined onto the Walk of Fame as part of the prestigious Class of 2026. These talented individuals have made significant contributions to the world of entertainment, and we are thrilled to honor them with this well-deserved recognition."
The honorees were selected by the Walk of Fame selection panel of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce from hundreds of nominations at a meeting on June 20. The selections were ratified by the Chamber's board of directors on June 25. —MGP, GMA Integrated News

PH, Japan mark 69 years of unbreakable bond

Despite being on opposing sides during World War II, the Philippines and Japan have come a long way since the normalization of diplomatic ties in 1956. Nowadays, the two countries' partnership is stronger than ever—spanning culture, trade, people-to-people ties, development, and now on security cooperation. This deepening connection was commemorated in Osaka, Japan, during the 69th anniversary of the Philippines-Japan Friendship Day. The event, organized by the Tourism Promotions Board of the Department of Tourism in coordination with the Philippine Consulate General in Osaka, showcased the rich Filipino culture and the strength of bilateral ties through music, fashion, and sincere tributes. 'As we approach the 70th anniversary of diplomatic normalization and the 15th anniversary of our strategic partnership in 2026, moments like this remind us that Japan and the Philippines are not merely neighbors connected by the ocean but partners connected by shared values, common aspirations, and mutual respect,' said Haneda, a former ambassador of Japan to the Philippines. While the occasion was joyous, it also carried a message of empathy. Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, through the COO of the Tourism Promotions Board, expressed solidarity with Filipinos affected by the recent string of typhoons and flooding enhanced by the Southwest Monsoon (Hanging Habagat). 'Tonight our hearts and thoughts are with those facing difficult times. We hold you in our hearts even as we gather here today. It is in moments like this that we are reminded of our strength found in unity and the enduring friendship between the Philippines and Japan.' Consul General Voltaire Mauricio in an interview with GMA Integrated News emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness as a shared priority between the two countries. 'Ito po ang ating ginagawa ngayon kapag bumibisita kami sa mga governors ng ibang probinsiya dito sa Japan, kung anong best practices na matutunan natin pagdating sa kanilang ginagawa pagdating sa tsunami, sa bagyo, sa landslides, sa lindol. Ano 'yung ginagawa natin at ano naman ang pwede nating ibahagi sa kanila pagdating sa lakas natin sa mga ganung klaseng sakuna,' the head of the Philippine Consulate General in Osaka explained. (This is what we do when we visit the governors of provinces in Japan. We find out their best practices that we can learn when it comes to response to tsunamis, storms, landslides, and earthquakes. What are we doing and what can we in turn impart to them when it comes to disaster response?) The Philippines has received numerous official development assistance (ODA) from Japan for major infrastructure projects and is one of the first countries to receive official security assistance (OSA) aimed at strengthening maritime security capabilities and improving monitoring and surveillance capabilities The Philippines and Japan established diplomatic relations on July 23, 1956. The Philippine Pavilion has welcomed about 600,000 visitors. Ambassador Haneda announced that the expo continues to welcome large crowds every day. A reimagined 'A portrait of the artist as Filipino' by Nick Joaquin to be staged this August

This August, the iconic Filipino stage classic "A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino" returns to the spotlight, not as a revival, but as a powerful reinvention. Entitled Quomodo Desolata Es? Isang Dalamhati, this fresh Filipino adaptation of Nick Joaquin's seminal 1955 play will be staged at the Hyundai Hall of Areté, Ateneo de Manila University. The adaptation and translation is helmed by acclaimed playwrights Jerry Respeto and Guelan Varela-Luarca, with Varela-Luarca also directing the production. The title, "Quomodo Desolata Es?" — or Latin for 'How desolate she has become?' — sets the tone for what the creators describe as a lamentation that flows between past and present, between literature and patriotism. The play reflects on cultural decay, generational duty, and the enduring struggle to preserve identity in a changing nation. Originally staged by the Barangay Theater Guild in 1955 at Aurora Gardens in Intramuros, "A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino" has long been celebrated for its introspective portrayal of two sisters caught in the crosscurrents of art, family, and society on the brink of war. This 2025 adaptation doesn't just seek to preserve Joaquin's intent, but to reinvigorate it with contemporary urgency, exploring questions of heritage, longing, and national grief through a more confrontational and poetic lens. "'Quomodo Desolata Es?' is a question of longing, uncertainty, and despair, answered through an elegy filled with dignity, conviction, and love for the nation and the art form," said the production team. The ensemble cast features some of the most respected and dynamic talents in Philippine theater today, including: Gab Pangilinan Delphine Buencamino Omar Uddin Brian Sy Vino Mabalot Maita Ponce Mika Regis Meyanne Plamenio-Cortezano Jason Sanchez Roldine Ebrada Jethro Tenorio Rafael Jimenez JJ Ignacio Chantei Cortez Performance Dates: August 8, 14, 15 – 7:30 PM August 9, 10, 16, 17 – 2:00 PM & 7:30 PM Venue: Hyundai Hall, Soledad V. Nic Chien introduces himself in 'Into the Woods'

Nic Chien is here, and he is all set to let you know his name. Nic is taking on the role of Jack in the upcoming staging of 'Into the Woods,' which opens on August 7 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Circuit Makati. GMA News Online had a conversation with Nic about his new role and how this was a dream come true for him. Dreams coming true Playing the role of Jack is a way for him to introduce himself, Nic said. 'It is sort of my debut as a transman, because before, my previous role was in 'Matilda' and I played a little girl, which is understandable. I was a little girl," Nic told GMA News Online. 'But now, I'm a young man, and it's nice that I get to play a young man in a wonderful musical,' he added. For Nic, portraying Jack is fulfilling a lifelong dream of playing boy characters. According to Lea Salonga's only child, he was 'never too interested in playing female characters' although he always thought acting was 'really fun' and wanted to do it in the future. 'I never wanted to be Maria from 'West Side Story.' I wanted to be Tony. I never wanted to be Veronica Sawyer in 'Heathers,' I wanted to be JD, you know? So there's that. Like, as a kid, I've always kind of wanted to be a more masculine role. So [Jack] is so incredibly affirming for me, and I'm really glad that it's the first role that I get to play,' Nic said. In April, Lea and Nic made a splash when they appeared in the cover of People Magazine and opened up about their "emotional" transition journey. According to the article, Nic "figured out" he was transmasculine at age 14 and began taking testosterone this January. Meanwhile, Lea was labeled "a fierce ally to her trans child." In playing Jack, Nic becomes the first transman to play the role in 'Into the Woods.' 'A transman has never played Jack before, and I'm really excited to bring some nuance to it in a little bit of a way,' he said. 'I am feeling pretty great. I am super excited to perform in front of a fresh audience, and I'm ecstatic to do this.' Playing Jack Nic shared that if there is anything he likes about Jack, it would be how he is very spontaneous and acts without overthinking. Admitting that they have opposite personalities, Nic says that he still shares some qualities with Jack. 'This curiosity and naivete kind of innocence, is something that I've felt like I've sort of had in me and yet also not been able to incorporate into an acting way in a long time. So it's refreshing. It's nice,' Nic said, adding he does "try to put myself a little bit into him." "And I try to make him unique in my own way to make it fresh for new audiences, for those who haven't seen and who have seen it," he said. Based on James Lapine's book, "Into The Woods" is a musical that sees several fairy tales like "Jack and the Beanstalk," "Cinderella," and "Little Red Riding Hood" intertwine. His theater luminary mom is also in the cast as the Witch, and they joined by Arielle Jacobs as Cinderella, Mark Bautista as Rapunzel's Prince, Nyoy Volante as The Baker, Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante as The Baker's Wife, Eugene Domingo as Jack's Mother, Carla Guevara-Laforteza as Granny or the Giant, Josh Dela Cruz as Cinderella's Prince and the Wolf and many more. Tony Award winner Clint Ramos will serve as the overall artistic and creative director, alongside co-producers John and Joanna Echauz, and Samsung Performing Arts Theater Executive Director Chris Mohnani. 'Into the Woods' opens at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Circuit Makati on August 7. More shows have been added due to high demand. — LA, GMA Integrated News
