Sam Kerr completely blindsides her fans by making a shock move as she battles to beat secret injury setback
Matildas superstar Sam Kerr has shocked her fans by making a surprise return to training with the national side as they prepare for their first matches under new coach Joe Montemurro.
The Chelsea star let fans in on her shock move with an Instagram post showing a photo of the Sam Kerr Football Centre in Perth, where the Tillies are training, and a shot of her feet as she was about to take the field, along with three grinning face with sweat emojis.
Kerr was not named in the team's 33-player squad to take on in friendlies on Slovenia and Panama in friendlies to be held on June 26 and 29, and July 5 and 8.
She also wasn't sighted as her teammates arrived down under to begin their preparation over the last few days.
It's the first time Kerr has trained with the side since April, when she did some light work ahead of the friendlies against South Korea but did not see any playing time.
She has just finished a holiday in Mallorca with fiancee Kristie Mewis and their baby son Jagger.
The 31-year-old suffered a serious knee injury when she ruptured her ACL during a training camp with Chelsea in January last year.
Her progress with the knee has been the subject of heavy speculation as it has taken longer than expected.
In April, Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor revealed Kerr would not return before the end of the Women's Super League season in England.
Earlier this month, Montemurro revealed that the striker had been forced to undergo a second surgical 'intervention' on a fresh mystery injury that had been kept a secret from fans.
It was reported that Kerr returned to Australia to undergo the procedure and she made a surprise appearance at the A-League Women's grand final in May, about a week after Mewis gave birth to their son.
Montemurro stated he won't be making an official call on Kerr's future as Australia captain, until she returns to play.
He explained that Kerr was back training on grass, having undergone the surgical procedure, while also revealing that her knee injury was much better.
'I think there were some complications and I've only caught up with the scenario in the last 24 hours,' he said.
'There was a subsequent intervention, but I do believe she is now back running.
'I think it was something completely different (to the existing knee injury). I think the knee is fine.
'I think there was some other issues, but again I've only been briefed in the last 24 hours.'
Thursday night's match against Slovenia will be Montemurro's first match in charge of the side and the four friendlies are an important building block ahead of the 2026 Asian Cup in Australia, the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, and the 2028 Olympics.
Montemurro has already held meetings with his players, and Clare Wheeler is liking the fluid and control-style game plan the former Arsenal, Lyon and Juventus coach is encouraging.
'As a midfielder, you want to get on the ball,' Wheeler said.
'So it's great when a coach says that he wants you on the ball. I think that's music to our ears.
'And it's also a challenge ... especially against, opposition where you're under pressure a lot.
'But I think when you have that trust from your coach that believes in the team to be able to do that, it feels good.

Tevez 'my favourite strike partner'
"Most defenders we played against hated playing against the two of us."Those are the words of Wayne Rooney, reflecting on his time playing alongside Carlos Tevez in a special episode of the Football Daily podcast about the divisive Argentine spent two trophy-laden years at Old Trafford, winning two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Carabao Cup and the Club World Cup."When Carlos joined Manchester United, there was a lot of talk about whether Carlos and I could play up front together," said Rooney. "I was really excited when we signed him."We were similar in ways how we played - both worked hard and could both play as a nine, both play off the forward as well."We had a really good understanding and chemistry on the pitch, off the pitch."I used to pick him up to take him to the airport before Champions League games. It was interesting actually because we couldn't really have a conversation. I think his English was better than he let on."He's a player you'd always want on your team and he scored some great goals for us, at big moments for us as well. Two years at Manchester United - two league titles, the Champions League... he was a massive part of that."I think Carlos was my favourite strike partner to play alongside."Most defenders we played actually hated playing against the two of us and we could feel that. We knew we were nasty as well."Very instinctive, intense, off the cuff. Anything could happen at any moment." Tevez's time at Old Trafford ended in controversy, with a move to city rivals Manchester City and the iconic 'Welcome to Manchester' billboard that followed."When Carlos moved to Man City, I was gutted to be honest and I'm pretty sure Carlos wanted to stay at Manchester United," Rooney added."At the time, City were trying to build, become competitive and win titles. I knew that he'd be a massive part of that because of the ability he has and I think we saw that when he went there."He had some great times at Manchester City so I was devastated. I would have really liked for him to stay longer and to continue to play together."Listen to the full podcast here

'Very unfair' - Hart on Tevez's substitution controversy
On 27 September 2011, Manchester City were 2-0 down in a Champions League group game at Bayern a now infamous moment, Carlos Tevez appeared to refuse to warm up to be bought on, leading to City boss Roberto Mancini saying the striker was "finished" and he wanted him "out of the club".However, City's goalkeeper at the time, Joe Hart, has now reflected on the incident, saying Tevez and Mancini "were both right to an extent"."The whole drama surrounding Carlos during that Bayern Munich game I felt was very unfair," Hart told a special Football Daily episode on Tevez's legacy."Carlos did make himself available to come on the pitch, but he was asked to warm up, having already warmed up for 20 or 25 minutes, and then he was asked to warm up again to come on - and I'm pretty sure he said: 'I am warm.'"It was the first time we were losing that season and we were getting beaten by a very good Bayern Munich. Both very, very hostile characters, which was part of why they were both good at what they did. "But, at that moment, it clashed and it didn't work well because Roberto obviously repeated, 'you need to warm up to come on' and Carlos being strong-minded as he is, says, 'I don't, I am warm'."The incident appeared to be sparked by the substitution of striker Edin Dzeko in the second half, with Tevez seeming unhappy he was not called on. Minutes later, when Mancini indicated to the Argentine to warm up, Tevez refused."Mancini was very aggressive, very animated. He had a go at Edin for some reason, and then he went wild at Carlos."Both in broken English, they didn't really understand each other, and I could see Carlos trying to find out what was being said to him and when he realised what had been said to him, he felt really wronged."It was a classic case of two alpha males having a different version of the same event and neither being able to say, 'look, we both need to calm down here and just sort this out' - because they were both right to an extent."

ES Tunis vs Chelsea prediction: Blues to seal place in Club World Cup round of 16
Chelsea vs ES Tunis betting tips Chelsea face Esperance Sportive de Tunis in their final group match of the Club World Cup on Tuesday night in Philadelphia (Wednesday, 3am BST), with the Blues needing a win to secure a place in the round of 16. A shock 3-1 loss to Flamengo last time out means that the Brazilian side top Group D with six points, with Chelsea currently on three. And with Tunis having beaten LAFC 1-0 in their last game, both of these sides sit on three points ahead of the final match in what will be a winner-takes-all contest in Philadelphia. The disappointing performance against Flamengo will have worried Maresca but he will know his team have more than enough to beat the Tunisian champions, and football betting sites have priced the Blues as 3/10 favourites to win, compared to 10/1 for the African side. Chelsea vs ES Tunis betting tip: Blues to advance to last 16 Many Chelsea fans will have come into this tournament fairly excited to see how their side performed against the world's best, though that excitement will have been dampened with a poor performance against a Flamengo side that were dominant for much of their 3-1 win. But while the Blues will have to be wary of a Tunis side who were able to beat LA, the gulf between these two sides is far more pronounced. Tunisian champions Tunis have won eight of their last 10 matches, scoring 21 and conceding four in the process, but though they lost 2-0 to Flamengo in their competition opener and will certainly not be used to the level offered by a £1bn Chelsea squad. And while Chelsea lost last week, that remains just their third defeat in the last 10, having scored 18 in that time. What's more, before the defeat to Flamengo the Blues had conceded just six goals in their previous 10 matches, with five clean sheets. The end of the season proved that when it all clicks, the Blues can compete with the best sides on the continent, so they should have more than enough on Thursday night. With that in mind, we're backing Chelsea to win with a clean sheet, with odds of around 4/5 with various betting sites. Chelsea vs ES Tunis prediction 1: Chelsea to win to nil - 4/5 William Hill Chelsea vs ES Tunis prediction: Delap to score first goals for new club? Summer signing Liam Delap hasn't got off to an electrifying start since his £30m move was confirmed last month, but the England youngster caused problems for opposition defences on numerous occasions in his first two games, including grabbing an assist on his debut against LAFC. The 22-year-old, who scored 12 goals for Ipswich as they were relegated at the end of last season, is yet to score for his new club but with Nicolas Jackson suspended and qualification riding on this game, there'll be plenty of expectation on his shoulders on Thursday. And we think Delap will rise to the occasion against a less stern defence, with a wager on the 22-year-old to get his score or assist offered at around 5/4 in the latest Club World Cup odds.
