Jane Street case: Shankar Sharma raises concerns over exchanges' oversight

Time of India8 hours ago
Veteran investor
Shankar Sharma
has raised sharp questions about the role of Indian stock exchanges in the recent Jane Street controversy, suggesting that profit motives may have prevented timely action against the global trading firm.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sharma questioned why the exchanges did not act sooner against Jane Street, even though they are among the first to receive trading alerts.
'How come the stock exchanges never sanctioned Jane Street? They are the very first to get such alerts,' Sharma wrote. 'How can they sanction JS when it drives F&O volume massively, hence SE profits?'
'Exchanges are not meant to chase profits'
Sharma, who has often criticised the structure of listed exchanges, renewed his call for a rethink of their role. According to him, exchanges function as quasi-regulators and should operate like public utilities — not profit-driven corporations.
'I have long held that exchanges should NEVER get listed. They are a regulator. Profit motive creates endless conflict of interest,' he wrote. 'SEs should be a utility, not for-profits. Simple as that. Nahi to, suffer all this hanky-panky.'

Sebi vs Jane Street
On Friday, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) passed an interim order accusing Jane Street, a U.S.-based proprietary trading firm, of using high-frequency trading strategies to manipulate index levels such as the Nifty 50 and Bank Nifty.
Sebi alleged that Jane Street pushed up index values in the morning by buying stocks and futures, only to reverse those trades later in the day, thereby influencing expiry-day pricing of options in its favour. The regulator said this allowed the firm to generate profits of over Rs 43,000 crore in index options, while deliberately incurring losses in the futures and equities segments.
Sebi has frozen Rs 4,843 crore in what it described as 'unlawful gains' and barred Jane Street and its entities from accessing the Indian securities market until further notice.
Stock exchanges under scrutin
In its order, Sebi mentioned that stock exchanges had issued caution letters to Jane Street in the past. However, it remains unclear what further steps, if any, the exchanges took before Sebi stepped in with enforcement action.
Sharma's remarks have drawn attention to this issue, especially since one of the two major exchanges—BSE—is a listed entity, while National Stock Exchange (NSE) remains unlisted but operates as a for-profit organisation.
The matter has sparked a broader debate about the role of exchanges in maintaining market integrity, particularly when sophisticated trading strategies and high-volume players are involved.

Gold prices may be volatile as Trump's tariff deadline approaches: Analysts

Gold prices may see heightened volatility in the coming week as investors track a crucial July 9 tariff deadline, policy signals from major central banks, including the US Federal Reserve, and key global macroeconomic data, analysts said. "These factors could influence the near-term trajectory of gold prices," analysts said, adding that traders are expected to remain cautious ahead of any major policy cues or geopolitical developments. The 90-day suspension of Trump tariffs on imports from several countries, including India, ends on July 9, reviving the risk of a 26 per cent additional duty on Indian goods entering the US. "Going ahead, the focus will be on the interest rate cuts by key central banks, especially US Fed Reserve, the outcome of trade negotiation between US and its trading partners, incoming global economic data, which could impact the near-term gold prices," Pranav Mer, Vice President, EBG, Commodity & Currency Research at JM Financial Services Ltd, said. Investors will also closely monitor the release of the US Fed's FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) meeting minutes. Last week, the precious metal futures for August delivery rose Rs 1,563, or 1.61 per cent, on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX). N S Ramaswamy, Head of Commodities Desk and CRM at Ventura, said gold prices in the international market, currently at USD 3,345 per ounce, could remain under selling pressure due to the solid US macroeconomic data that dented hopes of a July interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve. Despite some corrective rallies, Ramaswamy stated that "the short-term outlook favours consolidation and corrective upward movements, followed by a likely continuation of the broader downward trend". Ramaswamy, however, said fiscal deficit worries in the US and impending Trump tariffs decision could trigger fresh volatility and lift demand for the yellow metal. Central banks added a net 20 tonnes of gold to global gold reserves in May, he said. Prathamesh Mallya, DVP, Research, Non-Agri Commodities and Currencies at Angel One, said gold prices continue to be supported by a weakening US dollar and ongoing geopolitical concerns. "Dollar weakness has been a key part of gold prices rising in 2024 as well as in 2025. This trend will continue for the rest of the year," Mallya said. Meanwhile, JM Financial's Pranav Mer also pointed to persistent central bank purchases, and increased retail and institutional investments via ETFs as factors bolstering the long-term bullish case for gold prices.

Adani NCD issue: Adani Enterprises launches Rs 1,000 crore NCD offer at 9.3% yield, aims to repay debt

Adani Enterprises Ltd (AEL), the flagship company of the Gautam Adani-led conglomerate, has announced a public issue of secured, rated, listed, redeemable non-convertible debentures (NCDs) worth up to Rs 1,000 crore, offering yields of up to 9.3% per annum. The NCD issue, which opens for subscription on July 9 and closes on July 22, marks AEL's second such offering to the public. The base issue size is Rs 500 crore, with a green-shoe option to retain oversubscription up to an additional Rs 500 crore, PTI reported. In a statement on Sunday, AEL said the NCDs will be available in tenors of 24, 36 and 60 months, and will offer a range of interest payment options including quarterly, annual, and cumulative structures across eight series. Each NCD has a face value of Rs 1,000, with a minimum application requirement of Rs 10,000. "This new issuance follows the strong market response to AEL's debut NCD offering, which witnessed capital appreciation for debt investors after a rating upgrade within six months — reflecting the group's consistent delivery and financial robustness," said Jugeshinder 'Robbie' Singh, Group CFO, Adani Group. "As the incubator of India's most critical energy and transport utility platforms — including Adani Ports & SEZ, Adani Energy Solutions, Adani Power, and Adani Green Energy — AEL is successfully scaling the next generation of infrastructure businesses across airports, roads, data centres, and the green hydrogen ecosystem," Singh added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The proceeds from the issue will be used primarily for debt repayment, with at least 75% earmarked for prepayment or repayment of existing borrowings, and up to 25% for general corporate purposes, the company said. AEL's latest offering comes amid a softening interest rate cycle, offering retail and non-institutional investors a relatively high fixed-income alternative. According to the company, the NCDs are priced competitively when compared with similarly rated debt and fixed deposits. The NCDs have been rated 'CARE AA-; Stable' by CARE Ratings and '[ICRA]AA- (Stable)' by ICRA. CARE Ratings had first upgraded AEL's credit rating in February 2025 and reaffirmed it in June 2025, while ICRA assigned its rating in March and reaffirmed it last month. Instruments with this rating are considered to carry a high degree of safety regarding timely servicing of financial obligations and very low credit risk. AEL's first public NCD issue in September 2024 — a Rs 800 crore offering — was fully subscribed on day one. The company claims it remains the only non-NBFC corporate offering listed debt products tailored for retail investors. The lead managers for the issue are Nuvama Wealth Management Ltd, Trust Investment Advisors Pvt Ltd and Tipsons Consultancy Services Pvt Ltd.
