Two complaints against RNZ broadcasts not upheld

The Broadcasting Standards Authority has not upheld two complaints about broadcasts on RNZ National.
The first, on
Nine to Noon
on 8 October, 2024, marking one year since the 7 October 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel, included two interviews conducted by host Kathryn Ryan - one with BBC Middle East editor Sebastian Usher, and the other with Sally Stevenson, an emergency coordinator with Médecins Sans Frontières. The BSA found that listeners were alerted to alternative significant viewpoints during Usher's interview, and Stevenson's interview was clearly signalled as being from her perspective.
In addition, the audience could reasonably be expected to be aware of significant context and viewpoints from other media coverage. The BSA did not uphold complaints against Balance, Accuracy and Fairness.

The BSA also considered a complaint against National's
Saturday Morning
broadcast, on 12 October, 2024. This was an interview of a UNICEF spokesperson and humanitarian worker about her experience living and working in Lebanon amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas- Hezbollah conflict. The BSA found the broadcast was clearly signalled as being from the interviewee's perspective and was not claiming nor intending to be a balanced examination of perspectives on the conflict.
Again, the BSA said RNZ's audience could reasonably be expected to be aware of significant context and viewpoints from other media coverage. It did not uphold the complaints against Balance, Accuracy and Fairness.

RNZ has initiated independent assessments of its editorial coverage, and the first looked at coverage of the Middle East since the 7 October attack. Its conclusion was that the decisions of the Media Council and Broadcasting Standards Authority gave no reason for concern that RNZ was acting outside its own policy, the Media Council Principles or the standards administered by the Broadcasting Standards Authority.

JUNE 4, 2025 Today, the United States sent a strong message by vetoing a counterproductive UN Security Council resolution on Gaza targeting Israel. We will not support any measure that fails to condemn Hamas, does not call for Hamas to disarm and leave Gaza, draws a false equivalence between Israel and Hamas, or disregards Israel's right to defend itself. Recovery Of Judy Weinstein And Gad Haggai
Earlier today, Israeli forces recovered the remains of Judy Weinstein and Gad Haggai, two Americans who were kidnapped on October 7 and murdered by Hamas terrorists. My heart goes out to their family and to all families of hostages who remain separated from their loved ones. While this may bring a measure of closure to the Weinstein-Haggai family, it is a stark reminder of the enduring cruelty 56 families continue to face – including those of Americans Omer Neutra and Itay Chen – whose loved ones have been held by Hamas in Gaza since October 7. Top UN Advocate Sounds Alarm Over Sexual Violence Crisis In Gang-Ravaged Haiti
4 June 2025 The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on 21 May that widespread armed violence continues to expose Haitian children to widespread sexual abuse, exploitation and recruitment by the gangs which now control whole swathes of the country. Escalating sexual violence UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Pramila Patten, raised the alarm on Wednesday over a surge in reports of sexual violence against women and girls since the beginning of the year – particularly rape, gang rape and sexual slavery. ' These heinous crimes are overwhelmingly concentrated in areas under gang control,' she said, warning that sexual violence is being used deliberately and systematically by gangs to assert power and punish certain communities. Survivors have reported being assaulted in their own homes or public spaces. As health centres shut down and insecurity pushes families into overcrowded shelters, access to essential services remains limited. Without accountability, perpetrators are further emboldened. ' Concrete and immediate measures are essential to enhance the protection of Haitians, prioritizing those most at risk,' said Ms. Patten. UN response The Special Representative stressed the need for full deployment of the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, which aims to reinforce Haitian national security forces but remains underfunded. She called on the international community to step up financial support. She also underscored the importance of UN Security Council sanctions aimed at weakening gang operations, particularly by disrupting the illicit arms trade that fuels their power and attacks. The recent reopening of the Court of First Instance of Port-au-Prince marks a significant step toward restoring the rule of law. It follows the establishment of two Specialized Judicial Units supported by the United Nations, one of which focuses specifically on mass crimes, including sexual violence. 'I urge the Government of Haiti to accelerate the operationalization of these Units,' said Ms. Patten. 'Ending impunity is a fundamental step in breaking the cycle of violence and restoring dignity and safety to Haiti's women and girls.'
