Tourism London launches new campaign aimed at attracting U.S. music lovers

Tourism London has kicked off a new marketing campaign in an attempt to cash in on our city's reputation as Canada's UNESCO city of music. Sean Murray, the director of Culture and Entertainment with Tourism London, said it's already underway, targeting four northern states. 'It's called 'Summer Sounds Better Here,' and it's to highlight what our city has to offer,' said Murray. 'We want visitors to think music and summer sounds better here even if it's sitting on a patio listening to a band.' The campaign was launched on a number of different platforms. 'It's a digital campaign with some radio ads and billboards as well,' said Murray. The strategy is being welcomed by Mario Circelli, the chair of the London Music Awards. 'It's a great volley by Tourism London for a number of reasons,' said Circelli. 'One being that Americans get more purchasing power coming here because of the strength of their dollar.' The marketing campaign is targeting states like Michigan, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. It's looking at cities that are within driving distance to the Forest City. 'We've already had big success so far with Sunfest and Rock the Park this summer,' Circelli added, saying that many of London's festivals have a musical component. 'We are doing an amazing job highlighting our performers and now we are showing it to the rest of the world what we have to offer.'

Western University hosts global trombone festival, a first for Canada

The low, brassy rumble of a few hundred trombones will echo across Western University this week as musicians from around the world gather for the International Trombone Festival. Hosted in Canada for the first time in its 50-year history, the four-day event runs through Saturday, and brings 500 students, educators and trombonists to London for concerts, masterclasses and lectures. For Denis Jiron, assistant professor of trombone at Western's Don Wright Faculty of Music, the festival marks a milestone in his mission to rebuild the university's trombone program – something he's been working on since arriving three years ago. 'I thought this was the next logical step to provide visibility for the faculty as a whole, but also my studio in particular,' Jiron said. 'For a long time, this just was not the place to come study trombone, and my hope is that's changing. So this is a big step towards that.' Jiron led the bid to bring the trombone festival to London, citing Western's top-tier performance centres and the city's designation as Canada's first UNESCO City of Music. It's also the festival's first step outside the U.S. rotation in years, he said. Originally from Los Angeles, Jiron built a performance career that included work with the LA Philharmonic, LA Opera and Sapporo Symphony. He's also worked with Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Andrea Bocelli – a versatility that helped shape this year's diverse programming. While many trombone festivals focus on classical and jazz, Jiron made a point to showcase other styles. 'We've got Fred Wesley, who played funk trombone with James Brown and Tina Turner, and Jimmy Bosch, who's a big voice in Latin jazz and salsa,' Jiron said. Single-event day tickets before 7 p.m. cost US$8 and evening shows after 7 p.m. cost US$20. Day rates are also available for general attendees and students. Most events are on Western's campus, except for the UNESCO Music City Street Party at Richmond and Dundas streets downtown, running Thursday and Friday nights from 7 p.m. The downtown events are free . Jiron says all music lovers are welcome – no trombone experience required. 'So many people have a very stereotypical impression of what trombone is, and I think this would provide them with a different view of what trombone can do,' Jiron said. 'It really can be a melodic and solo instrument, not just the instrument in the background.' asathiaseelan@
