Venus Williams granted Cincinnati wild card after age-defying return to court
NEW YORK, July 23 (Reuters) - Venus Williams has received a wild card main draw entry into the Cincinnati Open, the tournament said on Wednesday, as the 45-year-old American enjoys an age-defying return to the spotlight. The seven-times Grand Slam singles champion became the oldest player to win a WTA singles match since 2004 when she beat world number 35 Peyton Stearns at the Washington Open on Tuesday, after a 16-month absence from the game. Williams, who will play Polish fifth seed Magdalena Frech in the next round in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, previously declined a wild card entry invite for Indian Wells earlier this year. The Cincinnati Open also offered a wild card invite to hometown talent Caty McNally, who recently returned to action after undergoing elbow surgery last year. The main draw of the Cincinnati Open begins on August 7.

NBCUniversal considering to launch a sports cable network, WSJ reports
July 23 (Reuters) - Comcast's (CMCSA.O), opens new tab NBCUniversal is considering launching a sports cable network that would feature content also on its Peacock platform, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. The potential channel, which would be offered in specialized packages, could debut as early as the fall, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. According to the report, the proposed channel would primarily feature sports that are also streamed on NBCUniversal's Peacock streaming platform. The network would be offered to cable and satellite providers as part of specialty channel packages, the report added. Talks remain at an early stage and a final decision regarding the launch of the network has not yet been made, WSJ said. NBCUniversal and its parent Comcast did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. The news stands in stark contrast to the broader challenges of the industry, as traditional television continues to lose ground to the rise of on-demand content and the growing trend of cord-cutting. However, live sports remain a bright spot, thriving even as other segments struggle. Meanwhile, NBCU is moving forward with plans to spin off most of its cable networks into a new company, signaling a significant shift in its media strategy.

The Fir Park starlet missed Tuesday's 3-0 win over Morton, with the Dane confirming he was elsewhere. Miller has yet to make a competitive appearance this term as transfer talks continue with interested clubs. Udinese finished 12th in Serie A last season and don't play their first competitive game of the new campaign until August 18. Speaking ten days ago, Miller's dad Lee confirmed a move abroad could happen this month. He said: 'I think there will be a bid that comes in, if not this week then maybe next week.
