I visited the UK's new immersive Titanic attraction – I gasped as the iceberg hit but there was another ‘wow' moment

AS I stepped 'on board' the SS Titanic, a shiver rippled down my spine.
I wasn't on the actual ill-fated liner - of course - but instead had stepped into the UK's latest immersive experience called The Legend of the Titanic: The Exhibition.

The exhibition immediately transported me back in time, unveiling the gripping story of the iconic ocean liner before its tragic demise.
I began by exploring a room full of fascinating artefacts before venturing into one of the exhibition's cutting-edge VR experiences.
In front of me stood a grand hall, full of projections on each wall and across the floor; I had been dropped straight into the scene of the Titanic's final hours.
For 30 minutes, I witnessed the tragic story of the Titanic unfold.
Personally, I found the story of the experience - which follows a daughter and father on the ship - a little gimmicky and it took away from the overall impact the projections had.
However, when the ship collided with the iceberg, I found it gut-wrenching.
The entire room 'shattered' as the ice tore through the ship's metal hull and waves lapped onboard.
The room plunged into darkness and the ship's decks quickly disappeared beneath the ice water.
Even the iconic Grand Staircase turned from a once vibrant focal point to a grave at the bottom of the ocean.
As the ship sank to the ocean floor, I couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief, knowing I remained on dry land.
First-of-its-kind Titanic exhibition coming to England
And I was then hit with a second 'wow' moment when I headed into another VR experience that simply took my breath away.
In reality, I was navigating around a large empty room.
But for me with my headset on, I was in a virtual world exploring the Titanic's various decks and cabins.
Glowing red squares marked real-life walls to avoid, and other participants appeared as green figures.
But for 10 to 15 minutes I got a real taste of what every corner of the Titanic was like, including the wreck that sits today.
Crossing a number of virtual gantries hovering above the ship's engines felt as if a single misstep could lead me to falling into the machinery below.
Finally standing beside the Titanic's captain, I removed my headset to reveal a slightly comical room of people wandering around like ghosts.
Other parts of the exhibition include information boards detailing the background of the Titanic and how it was built.
And there is also a room full of fascinating artefacts and personal stories for the ship.

The multitude of perspectives from first, second and third-class passengers was striking - highlighting how each passenger had a different experience onboard the ill-fated ocean liner.
While all the items on display are from the Olympic - the Titanic's sister ship - the collection showcases how everyday life operated onboard.
There are items from the 1997 film too, sharing how impactful the story of the Titanic has been throughout history.
One of the shorter VR experiences in the exhibition involves chairs that pivot 360-degrees.
Donning a VR headset, I was transported into a seven-minute adventure featuring music and imagery.
The music throughout the VR experience and exhibition as a whole has been meticulously crafted by 50 musicians and offers an eerie reminder of the orchestra that played as the ship sank.
Following the VR experience, even more information is shared about the behind-the-scenes of the Titanic and the cold waters that claimed so many lives.
I was surprised to learn that if it wasn't for the efforts of men battling a fire in the belly of the ship, the Titanic would have sunk an hour earlier.

There were a couple of let-downs for me, though.
Notably, there are few elements of the exhibition that cater to children, but instead, it felt like they were a tad insensitive.
Think: a pool-like table with a screen, where you play a game to break up an iceberg before a ship hits it.
However, looking at the exhibition as a whole - many elements are a testament to how technology can bridge the gap between us and historical events.
It was as if I was mere centimetres away from the reality experienced by the 2,224 passengers onboard the Titanic's maiden voyage - and not many people can say today they have experienced something like that.
The Legend of the Titanic: The Exhibition opens July 25 at Dock X in Canada Water, London.
Tickets cost from £24 for adults and £16 for children.

He previously dated presenter Hayley Palmer from 2023 until splitting in 2024. Speaking to the Daily Mail , the 44-year-old gave her verdict on her Mark's search for new love. Although wishing her ex well, Hayley said she did not intend on watching him in the E4 show. She added: "A year later, I've been able to turn past trauma into something positive. "I feel like I've done a lot of glowing up. I am in a really strong, happy place. Feeling very grounded." Mark and Hayley confirmed their split in May 2024, just days after their one-year anniversary. Taking to Instagram at the time, Hayley wrote in her Story: 'It is with regret I announce that myself and Mark have gone our separate ways. "We had the best year together and I truly wish him all the best for the future." The Sun later told how Mark took a swipe at his ex, saying he would only consider divorcing estranged wife Katie if he met someone serious. EXCL The Chase's Mark Labbett reveals he was forced to quit date after shock health scare Mark married Katie - who is also his second cousin - in 2014 and they separated in 2020. The former couple also welcomed a son during their marriage. He said: 'It will happen if either Katie or I get with someone serious — then it might obviously be a different matter.' Mark spoke out after Hayley told The Sun a month earlier that his break-up with her a week after their one-year anniversary left her 'completely crushed'. She said at the time: 'The whole thing was traumatic, and it's been a journey to heal from it. He was truly beastly.' But Mark feels relieved, explaining: 'I'm just quite content being on my own. 'Facts are easy. Numbers are easy. People are complicated. 'I could sum me up as the kind of guy who could tell you the capital of Estonia is Tallinn but would have no idea why that pretty girl is giving me a funny half-smile. 'That's why I never played poker seriously, because I realised I can't read people.' Mark Labbett and Hayley Palmer relationship timeline May 16, 2023 - The pair went on their first date to a Toby Carvery in Southsea, Portsmouth. December 24, 2023 - The couple decided to record a podcast together after being in a relationship for several months. They planned to cover everything from Mark wooing Hayley with his Toby Carvery card to dating in the public eye, shopping trips, their big rule of not sharing chips and hilarious inside jokes. May 25, 2024 - Mark broke up with Hayley over the phone, saying he wasn't ready to finalise his divorce with his ex wife Katie. Meanwhile, Hayley later fired back at these comments. Taking to Instagram, she told fans: 'I think it's a shame that someone could say something so heartless over a relationship that lasted over a year. "I have moved on and working to be the best version of myself. "I think what is actually serious is Mental Health and we should all be working together towards a caring Christmas. X."

Harry & Meghan were ‘not in a strong position' & signed Netflix deal for ‘much less'… TV giant ‘did it for publicity'
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) PRINCE Harry and Meghan Markle signed for their latest Netflix deal for "much less" than previously as they no longer in a strong position, a royal expert has said. The couple announced today they had signed a new "multi-year, first look deal" with the American streaming giant to produce "film and television projects". 3 Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have signed a fresh deal with Netflix Credit: Splash 3 Their multi-year deal with the streaming giant, signed in 2020, comes to an end this year Credit: Splash 3 An insider has claimed the couple have signed a deal for 'much less' than they did in 2020 Credit: Splash The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have previously released a number of shows on the platform, including a 2022 documentary on their lives and Meghan's lifestyle show With Love, Meghan this year. They had secured a lucrative five-year contract - thought to be worth more than $100 million (£74 million) - with Netflix after quitting as senior working royals in 2020. However, this new deal has been signed for "much less", an insider told Page Six. Adding to this, Royal Biographer Hugo Vickers told The Sun the couple were "not in a strong bargaining position" when agreeing to the new partnership with Netflix. He added that Netflix signed the deal due to the "publicity" the company would get from showcasing the royals on its platform. Hugo said: "I don't think the Sussexes would have been able to pressurise them [Netflix] because they're not in a very strong bargaining position. "Netflix will have figured out they will be getting publicity from the shows." This weakened position could have led to a cheaper deal being signed as well as the introduction of a "first look" clause in the agreement. It means Netflix will only pay for projects they want to screen, rather than pay in a single multi-million pound agreement like the one signed in 2020, The Sun understands. The Sun can also reveal, however, that the streaming giants will cover Archewell Productions's overheads, including all costs for its offices and staff. Meghan and Harry's Netflix deal is extended as 'special' Christmas episode of cooking show & new documentary announced Netflix will also have to fork out to the couple to have the exclusive first look on their projects. Hugo hinted that the deal could also be part of the nature of Harry and Meghan's need to remain in the public eye in their new lives - in order to keep income flowing to their "expensive lifestyles". The royal expert said: "I suspect that they lead a very expensive life. "They have to keep going as once the money runs out, and if their popularity runs out, they could be in trouble." It is not yet known how much the new extended deal will bring in for the couple, or how long it will last. Meghan said in a statement today: "We're proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As Ever brand. "My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally, and celebrates our shared vision." On top of Season 2 of With Love, Meghan - which will drop later this month - the couple will also film a "Holiday Celebration" Christmas special this December. "Join Meghan in Montecito for a magical holiday celebration," the announcement read. "Together, friends and family deck the halls, create holiday feasts, craft heartfelt gifts, and share lots of laughs – with simple how-tos to follow at home. It's a holiday wonder with warmth, tradition, and a generous dose of joy." The couple will also release a short film called "Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within" which will look at Uganda's Masaka region and the HIV/AIDS crisis there. This has echoes of Harry's mum Diana's work, who pioneered social change on perceptions of HIV/AIDS. 'Meghan & Harry need to come up with a hit soon' By Matt Wilkinson JUST when you thought it was safe to turn the telly on again... Harry and Meghan are back. And their multi-year renewal with Netflix means they are not going away anytime soon. There have been tense negotiations in recent weeks but Netflix is so deeply involved with Meghan's As Ever brand it was always likely that the streaming giants would want them back. Make no mistake, Harry and Meghan would have been desperate for the deal to be renewed. They will likely be opening a bottle or two of As Ever Rose in Montecito. Because they have invested heavily in Archewell Productions and getting on board with Netflix is central not only to their post-Royal endeavours but more importantly crucial to their bank accounts. If they lost their Netflix money then how could they afford their life in the US? While the length of the deal or how much the couple are getting paid is vague we do know that Meghan will appear in a 'holiday special' in December that will likely clash with the Princess of Wales's annual Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey. And finally, two years after I revealed in The Sun the couple had bought the rights to the book Meet Me At The Lake, production is in active development. Sources close to the couple are coy about whether Harry or Meghan will appear on screen for the production of Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within which will air later this year. But perhaps the best piece of news from the announcement is no repeat of the six-part documentary which dumped on the Royal Family. However, 'Harry & Meghan' was a ratings dream and none of their projects since have been anywhere as successful. They need to come up with a hit soon. And this 'first look' deal means Netflix has the first option on new projects from the couple without any guaranteed commitment. But remember the Sussexes are not the only Royals to be in bed with Netflix. The King will feature in a documentary on The King's Foundation with Idris Elba. In 1987, Princess Diana opened the UK's first purpose built HIV/AIDS unit at Middlesex Hospital in London. She famously shook the hand of a man suffering with the illness without gloves, publicly challenging the idea that HIV/AIDS was passed from person to person by touch. There is also "active development" on other projects with Netflix which "span a variety of content genres", including a feature adaptation of the bestselling romantic novel by Carley Fortune, Meet Me At The Lake. Bela Bajaria, Netflix's Chief Content Officer, said: 'Harry and Meghan are influential voices whose stories resonate with audiences everywhere. "The response to their work speaks for itself — Harry & Meghan gave viewers an intimate look into their lives and quickly became one of our most-watched documentary series. "More recently, fans have been inspired by With Love, Meghan, with products from the new As Ever line consistently selling out in record time. "We're excited to continue our partnership with Archewell Productions and to entertain our members together.' The Sun has reached out to the Sussexes for comment.
