Yamuna's level rises, close to danger mark

Time of India2 days ago
New Delhi: The water level in the Yamuna rose sharply on Friday and nearly reached the danger mark in Delhi. At 8pm, the level stood at 205.25 metres — the season's highest — at Old Railway Bridge, compared to the danger level of 205.33 metres, according to the Central Water Commission (CWC).
The river was flowing at 203.9 metres at 8am, but it surpassed the warning level of 204.5 metres at noon and inched closer to the danger level by evening. The warning level has been breached three times this season. On Aug 8, the water level reached 205.15 metres but dipped later during the day.
CWC data shows peak hourly discharges from Hathnikund barrage have remained over 40,000 cusecs since 1pm Thursday, touching the season's peak of 65,861 cusecs at 3pm.
The water usually takes about 48 hours to reach Delhi.

Bhim Singh Rawat, associate coordinator, South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers and People, said, "This is the first time this monsoon season that the Yamuna has got over 40,000 cusecs in discharges from Hathnikund barrage in the past 27 hours. The river level is likely to surpass the danger level in the next few hours."
These discharges, Rawat added, are required to help the river restore its essential hydrological functions and recharge the shallow aquifers.
"The continual adequate discharges from Hathnikund barrage will ensure a much cleaner, flowing Yamuna in the Delhi stretch — at least for a week. The more of this flood is allowed to spread on the floodplain in Delhi, the more it will help in floodplain rejuvenation and groundwater recharge in the city," he said.
According to the irrigation and flood control department, evacuation from low-lying areas will begin once water levels reach 206 metres. Meanwhile, regular announcements are being made in these areas, urging residents to move to higher ground.
The highest water level recorded was 208.66 metres in 2023 when Delhi experienced the Yamuna floods. That year, the highest discharge from Hathnikund barrage was over 350,000 cusecs, with many hourly discharges of over 100,000 cusecs.
