Police investigating incident where cyclist seemingly knocked into traffic by motorcyclist in Nanaimo, B.C.

Yahoo2 days ago
Police in Nanaimo, B.C. say they are continuing to investigate a collision caught on video that appears to show a passing motorcyclist knocking a 78-year-old cyclist into oncoming traffic.
The incident happened on the night of Aug. 2 at the intersection of Granite Park Road and Departure Bay Road. Dash cam footage from a nearby vehicle, a Tesla driven by Harlunn Anderson, shows a motorcyclist reach out toward the biker, who then tumbles across the opposite lane and onto the sidewalk.
Anderson said traffic in the area was moving slowly because the road was in an area between two school zones.
"If we were going any faster, there would have been a head-on collision," he told CHEK News.
The cyclist sustained minor injuries, including a swollen cheek and scrapes, but did not want to call 911 or go to hospital, according to Anderson.
"He had, like, a golf ball-sized goose egg on his cheek. It was cut open. His arm was bleeding, and there were a couple other people that stopped [to help]."
Const. Sherri Wade, media relations officer with Nanaimo RCMP, said the video sparked a flood of tips from the public. Callers recognized the motorcycles seen in the footage and directed officers to a nearby residence.
On Aug. 3, Wade said, an officer was at that home when a man approached and said, "Can I tell you what happened?" The man told police he had reached out to touch the cyclist's shoulder to avoid a collision and did not realize the cyclist had fallen until seeing the video online.
Nanaimo RCMP says he had also called police earlier that day to explain what happened and provide his contact information.
"We don't know yet whether it was intentional or whether it was one person letting another person know, 'I'm behind you and I'm going to go pass'," the constable said.
She said the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been laid so far.
Updated rules
Wade, an experienced cyclist herself, said she has never been tapped by another person while riding and described the encounter as "unusual."
She added that cyclists should use designated bike lanes where available, but if none exist, "we are to ride defensively so that other drivers can see us."
Wade said drivers should take extra care around vulnerable road users, no matter how "frustrating" it might feel.
WATCH | Study supports laws that allow cyclists to yield at stop signs:
Colleen Sparks, executive director of Capital Bike, a non-profit advocacy group, said touching a cyclist while passing "might cause even the strongest cyclist to react and potentially lead to a loss of balance."
"Touching someone riding a bike when passing could lead to an accident that is life altering for the rider," Sparks added. "We have to wonder what the motorcyclist was thinking."
ICBC says drivers in B.C. are required to give cyclists at least one metre of space when passing on roads with speed limits of 50 km/h or less, and 1.5 metres on faster roads.
Under B.C.'s new rules, which were introduced in June 2024, drivers must keep at least one metre away when passing vulnerable road users on roads with speed limits of 50 km/h or less, and 1.5 metres on faster roads.
Vulnerable road users include cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists and people using mobility devices.

Edmonton police release images of St. Pius X playground arson suspects

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) are hoping for public assistance in identifying images of two males and three females who are persons of interest in the investigation of a north Edmonton arson that gutted the accessible playground at St. Pius X Catholic Elementary School in July. The images were released Sunday. On Saturday, July 12, 2025 at approximately 8 a.m., EPS and Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) responded to a fire in the area of 122 Avenue and 128 Street. The fire that destroyed the Sherbrooke playground known as 'Purple Park' was determined to be arson. The equipment, which was specially built to be accessible for children with mobility challenges, was severely damaged and will remain closed until further notice. Sherbrooke Community League members who spent nearly a decade raising funds to build the playground were left devastated as the entire first phase of the playground had been destroyed. 'What was meant to be a joyful summer—the first season both phases of the park would be open—turned into a time of shock and grief,' reads a statement on the donation page. 'Affectionately known as 'Purple Park' by the kids, this space was a vibrant hub where children from the school and the wider community came to play, connect, and grow. The park was made possible through nearly 10 years of tireless volunteer fundraising by the St. Pius X Parents Association.' The Sherbrooke Community League is partnering with the St. Pius X Parents Association. 'Together, we can bring back the laughter, joy, and memories that the St. Pius X Playground was built to create. Let's rebuild hope. Let's rebuild Purple Park,' the website said. As of Sunday, more than $10,000 had been raised toward a $50,000 goal, including a $5,000 donation from the neighbouring Prince Charles Community League. 'The community is coming together at the park and throughout the neighbourhood, stopping and talking with one another about the fire and next steps,' Sherbrooke Community League president Catherine Jevic told Postmedia in July. Jevic said the playground has been especially important for local families due to its accessible design and daily use. 'Accessible recreation spaces are so difficult to find, so this park has been a game changer for many families in the neighbourhood, including the rocking table and other accommodations,' she said. ''Purple Park' was a children's landmark. The children are heartbroken, but they know how much love was poured into the space and that the community will come together and rebuild the playground as soon as we can.' According to the League's Facebook page, insurance is expected to help but additional costs were expected for things that aren't covered. In July, EPS acting inspector Eric Stewart told media investigators were thankful that the fire didn't spread to the elementary school. 'It went up pretty fast,' said Stewart. Fire crews arrived on scene at 8:06 a.m. and were able to extinguish the fire in 17 minutes. 'Not in my 22 years of policing have I ever seen any case like this. It's not a common occurrence we see here in Edmonton,' he said. Stewart confirmed there was more than one suspect, and that multiple people were in the area of the playground prior to, during and after the fire was set. 'To the individuals who were at the scene at the time of this event. You either witnessed it, or have knowledge of it, or were involved in this. We ask that you come forward and contact police as soon as you can,' said Stewart. 'This was a very careless and reckless act by the individuals involved in this event. 'We're very fortunate that this school didn't catch fire. It was very close proximity to this playground. It's a very unfortunate set of circumstances that now the kids that attend this school, and all the community members that put effort into building this playground, don't have a playground in the next school year.' Anyone who can identify any of these people is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at jcarmichael@ Related 'Careless and reckless act': Police deem Edmonton playground fire as arson Police seek assistance in suspicious fire at Edmonton elementary school playground You can also support our journalism by becoming a digital subscriber. Teen robbed at gunpoint during e-scooter sale, Winnipeg police say

A teenager has been charged with armed robbery after allegedly pointing a gun at another teen and stealing an e-scooter during a sale arranged on social media two months ago. Around 3:30 p.m. on June 10, an 18-year-old male arrived at a home on Springfield Road in North Kildonan to buy an e-scooter from a 16-year-old male, Winnipeg police said in a news release on Sunday. Police said the 18-year-old pulled out a gun, took the scooter and fled. On Friday night, major crime unit investigators arrested a suspect at a home on Manitoba Avenue in the William Whyte neighbourhood. He was charged with armed robbery using a firearm and was detained in custody. Police told CBC News the two teens didn't know each other and the sale had been arranged over a social media platform. Police said there is no risk to the public, but people selling their items on social platforms, such as Facebook Marketplace, should meet in well-lit public spaces and bring another person to the sale to avoid meeting with the buyer alone. There are designated buy-and-sell exchange zones at four Winnipeg police service stations across the city. Police encourage members of the public to complete transactions at one of these areas, when possible. More from CBC Manitoba:
